Got some cracks in the lacquer on my glass 23T altered body, clear went on pretty heavy in that area however the body has a lot of flex in it, from constant removal and around the windsceen base, presumably cause by flex at 150mph+. I'm repainting the body, would having a plastaciser like that used on ABS part to the base help with the flex, also can this be added to single pack clear ?

I don't know about the plasticiser bit but 1K lacquer should only be put on thinly and is designd to be used for blow ins plusdoor shuts and underbonnet areas etc. The factors don't tell you that (!) but I found out from the Lechler spec sheets.

If you put coats on too quickly the top will dry but not the underneath and as that dries it pulls the dried coast about hence the cracks.

problem is Kev, 2K's not an option at home and the single packs hard to get a decent finish with thinner coats. I think the bodies moving too much already, think your right though, thin coats built up 4 hrs apart or so would have been better

When we lacquered the flake on my kapri we would put 4 coats on and leave a couple of days to dry, then flat and leave open for a day or two for the trapped solvents to evaporate. Then recoat and repeat as necc.

Phil i've never had much faith in 1k stuff to be honest, 3 or 4 coats of 2k then let it harden for a day then flat & polish. Job done. I can't see why a plastisizer wouldn't work although i've never tried it myself.

steve, do you use an air fed mask or the 3M filter mask ?, I know the health risks using 2K at home and you should use a air fed mask etc, but there seems to be a large proportion of people using the 3M masks and refering to them as 2K masks, plus a lot of the trade use them ?

Phil its all about being sensible really, I fully suit up with air fed mask and painters suit for big jobs but small panels and engines etc i use the short duration 3M masks as they are very good, I do cover my skin although i'm not sure its actually absorbed through skin.

if you need any help doing whatever your painting buzz me as i'm not that far from you.

cool thanks Steve, I think I'm gonna go 2K for the next paintjob, didn't want to have to paint it again but theres too many cracks in the body which need to be repaired.

Is 2K affected by temp and humidity the same as solvent based paints with bloom or milking ? Do 2K primers need some sort of sealer before going over old paint ? Would you use plastisicer in the base coats on fiberglass ?

If it were me doing it Phil i would flat off the old paint with 400 grit and put on a couple of coats of epoxy primer befroe the 2 pack primer.
No need for plasticiser on GRP.
