today i got a new book ive been after for a little while, its an old book written by veda orr back in 1949, im surprised its lasted this long - covers lakes racing back in 46, 47 & 48, there is loads of cool old pics in it, pics that will probably never been seen other than in the book, some cool drawings by dick teague as well. here is a small slection from the book

Veda Orr's car is one of my favourite cars from back then, theres just something about it, I guess you could say it is a real hotrod, would love to see it in the flesh but i think its gone for good - there is only the replica that was finished not that long ago..

the next two pics are a couple of my favourites in the book, I really like how the exhaust flows down each side and stays with the shape of the car, makes it look very symmetrical and streamilined, car looks tiny in the other pics though.

a rare old riley conversion - only seen one of these and that was black roadster at the LARS this year.

this must have been a bit of a brown trouser moment for the guy sitting sideways on the track, the guys who raced these cars must have been brave men.

I've been looking for that one for years, nice to know that they really do exist.
The amount of times I've almost painted my car up as the orr spl, one of my top 10 for sure.

Wasn't there a piece in Hop Up (?) about a recreation of the Hilborn streamliner? I know there was a piece in Rodders Journal about it having dissappeared totally, was it the ten most famous cars to have vanished without trace?
Great piece of hot rod history in that book, I bet you must have splashed out at least three dollars on it.

Excellent Mark.
Love books like this.
Veda's contribution to hot rodding back then, both on and off the lakes, was simply amazing.

Very nice.
I read in a Montgonery book that Veda put down some records at the lakes in the early days but they were never listed because she was a Woman!

That's real nice (shows where I got a couple of pictures for the Bristol Hotrods home page! http://www.bristolhotrods.co.uk/).

I've had this page bookmarked for a while now 'cos the guy was intending to make it into a .pdf file ...

ian ive seen that guys web site a few times, there was talk of someone on the hamb reproducing it because they reckoned the copyright had run out but it never came to anything, think that conversation took place about 3/4 years ago.

bob there was a bit of confusion over this one - i had sent the guy a mail saying i would buy it because he had it on ebay but for some reason he pulled it from ebay and put it on the hamb, he came back saying sorry and sent me a thing from paypal for payment.

The black roadster with the wheel covers is meant to be the original body from the Orr roaster.
Thats why they are displayed together.

Clark I didnt know the black was was reputed to be the orr roadster..

I got offered a set of Lyon covers but they were really dented all over and had half the clips missing, couldnt justify the cost of them - would love a decent set or a set of stewart warner covers, yep they didnt only make gauges, but i think they are even rarer.

I think its just the body that is meant to be from the Orr car, but how they proved that I have no idea!
Seems like a little jackanory to cash on the Deuce celebrations if you ask me.

Kev, I did keep the wheel covers!
