That’s incredible stuff from Long Marston. I knew that they did Rallycross over the actual eighth mile strip in those days, but I didn’t know that this footage existed. Must have been from one of those Sunday Sport shows which transmitted only on ATV Midlands (now Central) at 2.00pm.

Dad and myself went to one meet when ATV invited the dragsters along to film the Castrol Dragster Challenge in 1976. They filmed the Rallycross in the morning and then the stage was transformed into an eighth mile drag strip in the afternoon, and run by the National Drag Racing Club [NDRC] for a 1 hour TV show with Dennis Priddle, Roz Prior, Clive Skilton and a cast of other star names. We were invited to race alongside John Whitemore as class champions with an blown A-series Junior Dragster - The Joker.

Sadly, the original tape was wiped, and the club copy was an old Betamax copy, and I bet that doesn’t exist now. The old item I have from the event is a sound recording taken from the TV.

I knew the owners of "Mitre Motors Services Ltd", long gone now though. Anyone watch the "Best of Top Gear" the other night, with the Motorhome racing at Arena Essex?
