Here's the historically important Low Flyers thread, imported from the 'old' NSRA forum. All originally posted May/June 2007.

I've pulled in all the posts and images, except where some of the original image links no longer work.

Has anyone got a picture that they can post on here, taken of the club at Bruntingthorpe. It is the one with all the cars parked in an arc.I think Kev is nearest the camera in his A if I remember correctly.
If anyone has any pics at all of the Low Flyers ..post `em up....they made a real impact on me, and I guess a lot of others, it would be good to see them again.
Maybe with all the "old barn finds" surfacing in the US and getting restored(!?)there could be some old `Flyers cars tucked up awaiting rebirth.
Is the club/group, still in any form whatsoever, even one last survivor still wearing his colours/plaque.
A major part of British Hot Rod history, we should give it some airtime on here.

I know for a fact that Kev Elliot has that very picture on his dinning room wall, so give it 8 hours and he may read this post and do the honours.

This is the article Street Rodder used that caused a bit of controversey and "the growing 1%" saying.

Kapri:
I remember the line up of blue /white cars well. The Lowflyers had snuck out early before the cruise around Hayling , parked up down by the Lifeboat Inn and repainted them all !

I've been led to believe that I have the remains of one of the B roadster bodies in that photo in my garage at the mo.

Though obviously not a Low Flyer, this car was one that did it for me - Simon Manhire's Merc - now in Scandinavia. Notice the Spirit of the 50's Club sticker.

Best thread in absolutely ages, it's fantastic to see pictures of the cars that have so obviously influenced so many people over the years, myself included. I have just been through my photo pile and I am amazed at how few pictures I took of the Low Flyers cars despite what they meant to me. I do however have a few of the 23T (ARU357A & ALJ198A, (two differnt reg no's, I wonder how that happened!)) as I owned it for around 9 years from 1989 to 1998. It's now back in the hands of its original owner Jensen Smee and runs a Rover instead of the 289 Ford. It's hard to believe this was all going on over 20 years ago.

How many of these cars are still together?
My roadster Kev Elliotts old A has hardly been off the road since around 87, apart from blowing the motor in the meltdown last year it has been very reliable in the 7 year I have had it. Attesting to the difference between "nostalgia rods and so called rat rods"
As a youngster who was heavily influenced by the Flyers in the early days it has been a fantastic experience to be a keeper of a car like this. I know Kenny Brookes B is still around and may be out at the Hayride, Jensen's T was back on the road a couple of years ago and I think Clives old roadster lives on, on the continent.
The others?
These cars were on the road before the Shifters/Choppers et al were out of high school and deserve a place in the history books

I have to agree, this is the best thread I have ever read on this forum.

Furthermore someone should write a book about this as it really was down to the Low Flyers and the Vultures that the Worldwide nostalgia rod scene is what it is today

I also think Jerry Desvaux of Rolls and Pleats with the old Continental Restyling magazine deserves some credit for spreading info (even if it was a bit dubious) about the UK's interest in old timey rods to other far flung corners of the globe via 'foreign' visitors to Hemsby, etc. I believe he sent a copy to Street Rodder that got some (negative) editorial space.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Battersea Boys:
There has always been the old style hot rods in the states, It is the low flyer movement that took it back to the dress/music look that really changed rodding worldwide Hemsby helped but there has always been car people and music dress people sometimes they never colide, The hayride meet which I haven,t been to yet, seems to be the envelope push that is encompassing the three. American throw back rodders are still slightly straycat although that is how the"scene" has evolved nothing wrong with that but it,s the modern take of rodstalgia you know tats and turn ups. However none of any of it is a bad thing..

Well - I have no pics, but it was Jensen's - after he'd sold his T. Think it was an A chassis with quite an early T or maybe a Dodge body? Lots of wood in it anyway! Got dubbed "the Angel" by maybe Dave Loder...

It would be an interesting project Monkey, but I would definitely defer to Mr Elliott on this one as he was actually part of the scene at the time, getting him to write a second book would be the challenge! Maybe when he's retired he'll write his memoirs...

The day the winds blew on Essex showground and the main marquee blew away:

Hayling Billy for a fond farewell pint:

And a drag race at Hemsby staged for some foreign film crew. Seem to recall they wanted a rolling shot after this and instead we just all rolled back to the bar...

This thread is great but is gonna get awfully confusing to those who don't know which are and which aren't Low Flyers cars, as many of the pics now posted are far too recent. The pic of the cars at Bruntingthorpe in an arc was taken by Colin Burnham, and is my all-time favourite pic, though I see Chris Ranstead has a shot of the same photoshoot, taken from the ground (Colin was up a stepladder)

As for a Low Flyers book, I'd love to do it, but as LP knows, it's a HUGE amount of work for very little return (oh and Keith, it'd be my third book!), and I personally don't have many pics from back then (too busy driving!)Plus the market would be so small no publisher would commission it. I'd have to pay to publish what would be a true labour of love. Now if people were to donate pics...

Aaron Kahan was tackling a similar project here in Ca (I'll have to ask him what happened to it) and assured me the Low Flyers would get appropriate credit. He and Jimmy White know their history.

As an aside, I never realised so many people had pics of the Flyers! I've enjoyed reading this thread, and seeing how young we all were, immensely.

Why it's Kerry's old T that with a bit of parting out became Tony Cardy's 13 second Flathead Meltdown winning car. Good to see it in its original guise.

Behind it is Kid Gloves Pilot Pickup that was featured in Street Machine.

I never guessed this post would generate so much good input. It`s a real blast down memory lane.It ties in with a post by SantaFe Bri a while back about the early BHRA with some real good pictures and stories.....all good early trad HotRod stuff....seems like we got ourselves some History.

Kev...the "arc" photo is a real favourite of mine and I was asking for a copy of it on here to try and have as my screen saver....if anyone can do the business with the pictures on here to try and make it a full page image, I`d be mighty grateful.

This is where you get into the grey area of photo copyright. Colin Burnham owns that image and every time it's used in magazines etc, he gets paid for it. He knows he has the only one too, and charges way more than the normal 'one picture' rate to use it, or at least did when I was at CC. It's a damn cool pic

Dave Loaders pickup is now pea green fully fendered and with a Rover V8.

The matt black 32 Coupe with a 327 Chevy (rear 3/4 view in Koops posting on page 2 of this thread at Hemsby) has been off the road years but is in Surrey and is unchanged. It is suppose to have had a 27 body on it before the Coupe body.

The pink chopped Plymouth Coupe with moon discs in timetravel's post on page 3 is also in Surrey and should be out again this year looking a little more streetroddy.

Is the scalloped Merc the one that was painted gloss black and used in a Walkers crisps advert and put in a museum?

Re posting on the HAMB: Essex Chick and Daisy Duke, you're wrong about the Low Flyers and the Lollipop Ladies. That was the FBI (Fleet Blithering Idiots) or as they were known in CC, thanks to Bagglady, the Hazard County mob. They also did the windscreen washing, the food fight complete with tuxedos, and the windscreen washing at Hayling. Oh, and the handbag fight with Smoke City. Ah, the good ol' days!
The only Low Flyers were (are) the owners and cars in that CC feature. There were and are plenty of cool trad/nostalgia rods in the UK that weren't members though, but it is getting confusing.
Maybe John the Hippy or Clive could back me up, but I think I'm correct in saying the full line-up is as follows:

John the Hippy '27T & Pilot
Clive Griesel '32 roadster/sometimes coupe
Jensen Smee '23T
Neil Power '34 2D-alike
Debbie Blackmore '32 roadster
Kenny Brookes '32 coupe
John the Cynic '32 coupe/roadster
Cookie '27T & Merc
Gary Janes '50 & '53(?) Chevy kustoms
Dave Loder Notso Special Pop/T

Plus Kev Elliott (A roadster), Mike Scotney ('32 roadster) and maybe Vorn (A coupe) drafted in at Bruntingthorpe just before the famous picture.

I hope I've left no-one out!

The clue was in the fact that when they eventually managed to stand in a line, blocking the cruise on the temporary zebra crossing, and turn the lollipops round it spelt B-L-I-T-H-E-R-I-N-G I-D-I-O-T-S.

And somewhere I have some pictures of 'em all striding round the campsite...

Looks like it could be Clive's roadster.....

Here's The Highliner's video 'Henry The Wasp'. Watch for a snatch of a '32 type roadster about 1 minute in. There's a number (55) on the radiator grill, but the number plate is impossible to make out.

It was actually Vorn's (out of the highliners) roadster but Clive did end up having it.

It was Clive's roadster in the video, and Vorn did have the A coupe. Modt of the band had MkII Consul highlines, hence the name! Remember the pink Transit at Chelsea?!

We met the Highliners in st tropez - southern France in 2003, it was my first trip in the 32, brilliant trip and we met up with the guys in a camp site, they had a pink splitty, we did,nt think they were dodgy at the time but now I see the sparkly shorts I would be slightly concerned now.

I'm just curious to know how many paintjobs some of the cars had, obviously they were all blue and white at Hayling. Clives was matt black, red oxide, yellow and black stripes and Kenny's was blue, white with black flames and is still in red oxide, does anyone know of any other colours that they were??? Wasn't one of the 32 roadsters pink at one time??

Cheers for the pics KoppaK, I notice that the post has had 7,100 views - so there could be scope for a book or even another 10 year update of the "Flyers" in Custom Car. I was looking in the Nov 1988 issue of Street Machine which had the original article in last night - it also had a feature on the Highliners and Tour gig dates. I went to see them live thanks to that article. There is a white 32 Roadster in one of the pics next to the pink VW splitty - is that yours Coyd??? I would scan the pic but I don't have a scanner - anyone else???

Yeh thats the roadster in her first year on the road, think 84, we had a fantastic trip, travelled all on the A roads, remember arriving in the south of France getting the first sight of the coast line, with the Beach boys playing, then my fuel pump packed up
did'nt matter though as we met 3 really nice girls in the camp site we were stuck at. I heard the Roadster was on the Highliners record cover but I never saw it, until now.

Thank you so much to everybody who has taken the time to contribute to this thread ....I am VERY proud to have this association in my history and , although I have been involved in various HOT ROD based projects over the years , my heart is still very much embraced by the whole Nostalgia movement ....it gets under your skin.
I will dig out some of my pictures as soon as I get a chance and scan them .....nothing much different to those listed , as Kev said , we were so busy enjoying ourselves to really take many pics .....

Thats me to the right in the beige jacket , by the way !! I was about 22/23 then !!

Then rebuilt the motor, and the whole car....Miss it lots
Sold it to some guy up north , but then saw the the car re-emerge with a different plate...

I still have the old front plate form the car hanging in my garage!

Hi,
Always had some questions about the plaques....where did the design come from? did only the original members and cars have them or were they avaliable for a while? how many were produced?? how many are still about??
They became a very recognisable part of UK rodding but not alot is known about it...

Did any of the Low Flyers live on the A3 between Shannon Corner & the Kingston junction as I seem to remember seeing one of these cars in a driveway along there? Even stopped once when there was a group of guys there & asked if they were, got a bit of a strange reaction at the time (not surprising I suppose!).
