This may sound stupid but the 70s PoPs were just right for the 70s. Looking at these old photos brings back great feelings of wanting to get to the next show to see all the new cars but PoPs been my dream to own. (i know its sad isnt it) but i was 16!!
I know things change and fashions change but I do think the '70s PoP ' has its own place along with 'pro street' and 'Gasser'. Dont get me wrong I wouldnt own one BUT they have a place in the British rodding history and some should be preserved in the 70s 'style'.
Just my view

Now, I know i'm a relative newbie in the rodded pop scene but I never realised just how many awesome lookin pops have been around. Yes, I flicked thru countless back issues of old custom mags but that just gives a small sampling of what was, and still is, really out there. One of the best threads that I've been on so far..... Here's a car with a history......
I had the great pleasure of meeting Bob Gleadow last year, when he came into my Pub, by sheer coincidence, as he was looking at a house nearby. He saw my Pop pictures on the wall and we got talking......

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/motorphysco1.jpg
Back in the early 70's, Bob & his brother, Mick got hooked on drag racing, and decided to build a Pop!
This text is from their great website:
"Way way back in the mists of time, Bob and his brother Mick were working in a catering van for their Father. They happened to turn up at a drag race with it, and became hooked. Their first car was built at their Dad's bakery in Hitchin, Herts. A Ford Pop was the choice of car, and in it's first incarnation it was known as 'The Mangler', painted green with orange lexan windows. This went on to fame and notoriety as Motor Psycho, first in purple then for 1973, in blue."
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/motorphysco2.jpg
"The car ran for a while before a rather impressive wheelstand which, on returning to horizontal, caused the motor to expire rather nastily. Bob and Mick were disheartened by this, and the car went up for sale."
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/motorphysco3.jpg
"A young man by the name of Al O'Conner purchased it in 1975, and soon everyone knew the name 'Al's Gasser'. It can still be seen terrorising the strip today, albeit in name only as the original car was totalled in a rather severe crash some time ago."
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/alsgasser.jpg
The name "Motor Pyscho" lives on, but it is now gracing the body of a 34 coupe.

Phil Chappel's in that pic, don't know if it was his in the black and white shot too. Anyone remember the letter saga in Custom Car between Phil and the then editor, who was scathing about the style and paint on the car? Probably around '76 or so.

Cliff Puddle's red flake Pop, BBF motor and drilled original front axle with Triumph motorcycle coilovers assisting the buggy spring. All the door bracing and lots of the bodyshell's internal structure were liberally 'swiss cheesed'.
I believe that this is the car that subsequently became Jan Somerville's Pop that stood on the back bumper at last year's Hot Rod Drags. Jan's car has frequently been described as the old 'Puddle Jumper', seen earlier in this thread, in both V8 and later Jag V12 versions but I'm sure that car still exists in its later form. I'm almost certain that the confusion arises from the fact that when Cliff's racer was featured in Custom Car back in the mid 70's, the feature was titled 'Puddle's Jumper'

Wow! Cheers Brizey. Even more pics of my Pop. Damn shame that IRS dont look like that still. It looked well tired when I got it! Suppose after 35 odd years we've all got a few blemishes eh! lol. Just noticed under the rust, tho you prob cant see it on the thumbnail, that it looks like 'Street Odyssey' was engraved into the rear tie strap. Anybody remember?? I've still not thrown the tie strap away. I'll clean it up later n see if my eyes wernt playing tricks on me!

Lee, here`s a photo i took at Crystal Palace in the early 70s, in fact the same day i took that rearend shot. You can see the rear of the roof of `Street Odyssey` in the middle right, with `Pinball` just past that...

Lee, only the red version is your car. The white paint was the first incarnation (wittily described in CC as having paint inspired by Scalextric) and the purple/grey psychedelic version was a subsequent rebuild/repaint. Just after its debut that car was totalled by a drunk driver (I think?) on the way to the NSRA Stratford Run around '76 or so. Your car was a total new build, although I daresay some parts may have been salvaged from the wreck.

Ian, to the right of the Gasser, you can just see the rear quarter of Al's matching painted Pilot, 'Al's Hauler'.
I think that could be earlier than '78 though, isn't that the original car that rolled? I thought that happened a little earlier.

This is all true... And yes, when I spoke to Phil Rutherford a couple of years ago he said that he robbed the salvageable bits to put on the shell I've got which he got off a mate who was using it as a chicken shed! Funny that coz that was the same words my missus used when I brought it home, oh except for a few added effs n jeffs for dramatic effect!! lol. There is a small picture in one of the mid 70s C.C. mags that shows it after the crash... Rolled on its side apparently

2 from 1970 and one from approx 1974/5 here....
First two were featured in the 2nd ever issue of CC!
First one came from the Isle of Wight, built by Lee Schofield, proprietor of the bodyshop mentioned on the side!. 1390cc Hillman Minx engine and reversed 10" Mini wheels on the front!!!!
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/medinapop.jpg
Next up we have an old favourite of mine, built by Russ Ward. He bought a Pop and an Austin Devon for £5 the pair, stuck the Ford shell on the Austin chassis, and then dropped in a 3.8 Jag engine.
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/russward.jpg
Third one is Lazy Lotus, built by Phil Baines, from the Bristol area I think. Powered by Lotus, naturally, this car was seriously low, check out the grille. I nearly bought this car in 1977 but he was too far away for me to travel "on-spec", so I drove 4 miles to Basildon and bought my Pop there instead!!

The very first Pop picture on thsi thread was built By Derek Chapmans brother and registered as a NEW car back in 71 , hence the J plate. Thsi was xommon to most ne wbuild rods as everyone wanted it to look like they had a new car not an old one ,my ...how times change?
Anyway , that Pop got resprayed in red flake and a V6 fitted to replace the 1600GT before being sold on. Anyone know it's whereabouts, was big part of my early rodding history ( he was Southern Roadsters member as well ) as I remember having a bit of a duel with it in my stage 2 Alpine sports that I was running at the time :)

Another blackchoppop, this one's my mates"taz tony's",who put his intro on yesterday.
the car is curently undergoing surgery ,wheels, track narowring, lowering, and SB Chevy.
Here's a couple of Daimler-powered Pops.
The yellow one was built by Andy Hobday and had a 2.5 V8, Sherpa/Westminster rear and I think a Triumph IFS. My first weekend at a Gary's Picnic (1982?) saw three of us, along with tents and crates of beer jammed into the Pop.
http://www.localtraffic.freeserve.co.uk/local/w_pop_02.jpg
Gary's Picnic had infected us all with with a need for speed, so in about '84 it went into the garage for a rebuild with narrowed 9" Ford, and a smallblock Chevy. Life, and a few other cars, overtook the Pop and Andy eventually sold it unfinished - he thinks it went to Pop Parts Plus.
http://www.localtraffic.freeserve.co.uk/local/w_pop_03.jpg
The red one had a 4.5 V8, Jag rear, and MGB front. Ray Turner owned it in '82-'83, before selling it and getting a black '55 Chevy in '84 which was to become Green Onions, which he still owns (and occasionally drives :)).

1 non pop sneaked in there Ron!, none the less, some great photos from Dave's site.
I contributed some photos to Dave's site 4 or 5 years ago, some great historic pics on there.
Most of your photos are of F1 stockers, the big boys. F2 cars are even more heart breaking as they used the complete car, not just the body as per F1.
It`s funny you posting these stock car photos on here when you did.
Yesterday, Saturday, I went to Billy`s (North American) in Fleet. About 10 minutes drive from Billy`s is where the old Spedeworth Aldershot stock car track used to be, it`s now part of the Aldershot by-pass.
I had a quick drive up there to try and find where the track used to be, but got a bit confused at first because it`s changed so much. I ended up taking a walk down a path alongside a mobile home park, but could`nt find any references to where the track would have been.
I stopped for a minute, looking round. Then suddenly realised the high wall right behind me was the wall that used to run along the back of the old pit area, and that I was actually standing where the pit gate was and that I was facing right across where the track used to be!.
I must have stood there for 5 Min's, just remembering things from my past that happened at that track.
Jumbo Allen, the start marshall, telling non stop dirty jokes.
After a race trying to tinker with a red hot Ford 10 motor in very bad night lighting, and then checking the level of the Castrol R oil and rad water and maybe changing a flat tire.
All the drivers and us mechanics wearing white overalls with our car no. on the back!, and filling up the motor cycle petrol tank fitted where the rear seat used to be. Rules were that petrol tanks had to have a shut off tap fitted, and M/C tanks came fitted with such!.
You allways new the drivers, they were the one`s with Panda eye`s where their goggles fitted.
Now knowing where I was, I started looking around in the undergrowth and came across an old piece of lighting that used to be suspended above the track.
This bought back more memories of mid-meet blackouts when the lighting failed (which was quite often). A strange coincidence was, I was in hospital back in `96 with a broken leg (a motorcycle accident) and talking to the other patents there, it turned out one of them was actually the guy who used to fix the lighting there during those blackouts.
I carried on looking round and found an old front axle, wheel, spring and steering box, it looked to be off a `30s Morris or similar?.
I got to thinking about all the old pops, Y models, Fiat bodies etc, that I saw (and helped) smash up at that, and other tracks. It was a sad moment, but it was part of the culture back then, and consequently, part of my past, and as such, something from my very early `teens I`ll always treasure...
Used to race bangers up there back in the early 70's Bri, just had to be done back then. Rather than doing it regularly we used to wait until a mate / family member had a car that they wanted to go out in a blaze of glory ( usually into an rsj on the second lap if we got real lucky ! :)

Hi Steve ,the LUT 490 car was responsible for me having to built my own Pop, or rather the builder Simon Farmer was coz he would not sell it me back in 1978.
And yea it went on to be couped and in the hands of Paul Kempton, but what interests me is does your mate still own it ?,as i was approached by Chris Shires the owner of the coupe POP last year at Billing. Its now without its original # plate,in fact i have this photo for him i carry around in the boot of my Pop for him.

The Pop aka LUT 490 is still alive and currently undergoing a refit. Sarah and Chris Shiers own it down here in Kent and have done for about 9 years.
Currently the Pop runs a 305 Small Block Chevy, painted pale yellow and has suicide doors, Jag rear end. If I recall, when we went to collect the car from somewhere around Heathrow, the guy who owned it told us it had been fitted with a big block at some stage. The V6 Essex, V8 Rover engines and the live (Consul?) axle were long gone, which is how I remember it at the Chelsea Cruise, mid 80's
Im sure they would be interested to find who has the original registration number so it could be tied back to the car. Does anyone know who has it now?

I had checked it some years ago and if I remember correctly, it was on a 1999 vauxhall Arena van.
I wonder whether this fella is a rodder or just liked the plate. With over 55 million people in the country, someone must know who has got it.
I seem to recall that it was seen in the Bristol area but I think I had drunk a few that night!
Paul
Cheers for the email Ian. The plate has been on the white Vauxhall Van for a while. The rumour it was a VW van before that. I was contacted by Nigel Hiiberd who told me the van owner is a guy called Ian Fisher. He is supposedly building a rod. However despite leaving several voicemails he never returned my calls so I gave up.
If anybody in the Bristol Area, as that is where it is apparently, knows Ian, or the current owner I would like to swap LUT 490 for the current plate on the Pop, VPB 403, if possible.
Great thread on old pops. Never seen LUT 490 before the chop.
The coupe is currently under a pile of crap in my garage awaiting me to pull my finger out and put it back on the road. No its not for sale.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of my old Anglia, PEV 138.
I built the car back in the early 90's, painted Rosewood metallic,Rover V8, jag rera Viva front; sold it to Jel Andrews in 98 and then it went up north to the Candy Man who revamped the car, pant, wheels, interior etc. Pictures of the car have already been posted on here.
Car came back to Essex 2002/2003 (I think) and was owned by a lady who drove the socks off it for a while.
Met up with the new owner at Billing, either 2005 or 2006, who gave me his details. All I know is that he lived in the south London area but havent seen the car around for some time.
Dos anyone know the new owner or even better, put me in touch with him.

Here's another photo of HHM 707, at an 'atmospheric' Gary's Picnic in '81, waiting for the track to dry out...
http://inlinethumb04.webshots.com/40835/2086235030102699633S600x600Q85.jpg
And, just trying out my new scanner, here's a brief history of my old Pop build-up.
Bought it in '84, and by the autumn of '85 it had a filled roof (Chrysler Alpine, I think) and a 3" x 2" chassis based on the Hot Rod New Angle Anglia plans. They're milk float springs on the front. The Hilborn injection didn't make it to the road in the end - maybe it would have done nowadays with current aftermarket technology, but it was a step too far for me back then.
http://inlinethumb56.webshots.com/38519/2194028620102699633S600x600Q85.jpg
On the same day it got a mock up of the 'glass wings. The yellow front ones were from my mate's Pop, HHM 707, as he had started rebuilding it by then. The rears were Pop Brown's 4"-overs which were trimmed to bolt up into the tubs, probably about 2"-over once finished. Note the Andromeda-inspired mural on the door :)
http://inlinethumb45.webshots.com/41452/2409081800102699633S600x600Q85.jpg
Continued...
By September '87 it was getting close to being ready for tearing down and painting. The bottom six inches of the body had all been rebuilt in steel and front wings replaced with steel ones - these also came from Andy's yellow one, but he had radiused them so I had to salvage the lips from my original rusty wings to patch them. I worked at a metal fabricators back then, so lots of the stuff was made there, including the aluminium bonnet and scoop, the window frames and Macrolon windows. We also had a powder-coating plant so anything could be unbolted went through the oven :)
http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/40137/2494490400102699633S600x600Q85.jpg
One last one taken in '91, after a couple of years on the road. A lot had happened since the prvious photo. I had painted it in cellulose Tahiti Blue in the garage with a little cheapo spray gun and compressor. It was so gutless the paint was nearly dry when it got to the shell, so for the first summer on the road in '89 it had a nice satin finish! After a year of Muncie 4-speed shifting with a vertical gate lever, and snapping a couple of axles, I had rebuilt the front chassis with shortened Capri struts (made at work) and a TH400 auto, and a 750 vacuum secondary Holley. The paint had also been rubbed out so had a reasonable shine too.

This is a really interesting thread with some great pics bringing back loads of fond memories. I actually did the coupe conversion & bodywork for Paul Kempton on LUT490 back in '80-'81. The car was in grey primer with a chopped top when it came into us (Autocraft) & was fitted with a v6 & chromed Consul back axle & a chromed pop tank. Paul sourced the model Y bumpers & had them rechromed. The work to coupe & paint the car cost the grand total of £900.00 & took a total of 6 weeks solid work for two of us to complete. The interior was trimmed by a guy called Phil Whitmore from Talbot Green (S Wales) as a favour to Paul I believe, in black needle cord with purple piping (to match the blue flip flop flames) . The first outing for the car was at Belle Vue Manchester, but the car wasn't allowed to be judged for some political reason or other. Tony Thacker thought someone had put a '34 Ford rear end on a Pop which we found amusing. The car was sold to someone form the Portsmouth area I believe & was subsequently painted red with flames. The car was then painted two tone turquoise & had a Jag?? rear & Chevy 305 fitted to it. The last time I saw the car was when it was painted cream at Drayton Manor a few years ago. I've still got a load of the build up pics of the car somewhere if anyone's interested:).
here's a pic of it in red courtesy of Holmesys site, which credits the coupe as belonging to Bill Mc Dermid aka billy the kid.

Cheers guys, a lot of work went into it, and I learnt a hell of a lot (much of which I have probably now forgotten - especially the smallblock Chevy bits!). It is actually 15 years ago this month that I sold it (or gave it away...) when I was made redundant. It's unlikely I'll ever be in a position to do as much engineering on a car again, although obviously didn't realise it at the time. I think I preferred that scoop, with the side splitters based loosely on Funny Car ones of the time, although I made some moulds for a 'glass mini-aero scoop that I fitted later in '91.

Thats it !!!! quitely sifting through the forum and my old pop comes up pgd 327 as everyone knows now residing in perth australia .Very kind compliments about her and i was lucky to have her for 10 years. We had some fun times together probably being up the backside of a softop merc 500 with body kit and big rims on on the a12 one of them . I followed him out of clacton and stuck about 5 inches from his bumper up to around 130mph right up his chuffer must have scared the s*** out of him. Also the time when i beat cliff griffin at shakey ,oh yeah and the pulverisation of the ferrari the pistonheads guy at shakey as well.
I still think now it was one of the best pops i have ever seen and surprised she isnt mentioned more when top tens are being discussed .Rems work was outstanding especially built back in the 80,s way ahead of its time.
One day i will get the pics when i sold her off my other computer and try and download them on here. looked the best at that point with new headliner and seat covers as well i had spent weeks underneath on hot perth nights carefully cleaning on top and underneath to get her spotless.Do i regret selling her NNNOOOOOYESSSSSSS!.

Sounds like Mike Parry, who used to live down in the village from where I am now (Ducklington). I didn't know he had a Pop. The Topolino was well built, but I haven't seen it for years - don't think he still has it. Last I heard, he lived in Carterton, Craig.

Hi Rem,spoke to Ray today and remembers Mike Parry having a Topolino and reckons that if owned the pop it must have been some 30 years ago,
Would been nice to meet the guy to find out some info on the car,
Its a bit spooky that he may live in Carterton and the pop has seem to gone full circle and ended up in the same place as it onwer all this years on.

Sold to someone in Bristol thefourth owner who decided to remove the Rover V8, S Type IRS Rear end and replace them with a Ford Pinto engine & a Live rear axle.
Rover V8, IRS found there way into a Yellow Model T built in Bristol mid 90?.
Last heard of XFB was rotting away in someone’s front garden.

....going back to 96/97 when i was on the NSRA commitee and my old blue Pop.......this was either my first or second ever time taking a car down the strip, at the same meet, HRDs, i was also paired against Dorset Horn and spent most of that run just watching it accelerate away from me....awesome.....i lost the race below as lol......car is now back with the man i bought it from getting some TLC and looking very good from the photos he showed me....had a lot of fun in that old pop and so did a few of the committee that weekend as many of them got to get a run up the strip in it.

That six fits under the bonnet better than I would have expected.... Car looks nice!

Problem is to remove the rocker cover was an engine out job. It didn't intrude into the interior too much either. Shame we had to sell in on.

Green one was a nice early Pro Street car, really nice

This red one was owned by one of the Essex Popular Front, sorry I've forgotten your name!
If you look closely, you will spot the rather tasteful T shirt he's wearing, an early Pop Shop one!

Lastly is this panorama of the first ever Pop Line Up, which I organised at the 78 Nationals at Knebworth. I was on the organising committee and was in charge of setting up the Show 'N' Shine. After 5 minutes of watching the Pops parking randomly I had a brainwave and moved them all together, in the front row!
Back then we couldn't afford too many chemical toilets..... Just handy that there was an MGB available!

I don't normally look at the Pop forum, but I noticed this one & thought I'd offer these two I found in my archives, dating from around the early 60s.
This first one was featured in an early mag & had an "interesting" interior (the seats were upholstered horizontal slats) amongst other things.

All I know of this one is it was owned by Paul Knowles of Whitstable.

This photo interests me on two levels. Firstly, I got collected from secondary school a couple of times in the Pop, the owner at the time was a bloke called Ian, he used to knock about with Terry Baker who had the Anglia van Silver Temptation, this would've been around '76.
The second reason is the blue 'flake T Bucket with the Himsl style ribbons to the left of the Pop is the car I own now, it's the oldest Jago T according to Geoff Jago, he built it shortly after his own Zephyr powered one. Got any more photos from that show Nick, be great to fill in some of the holes in its history.

Great thread, I am eagerly waiting for a 70's pic of fordson HD9823 to appear. It was my first fordson and was a 60's? 70s Northern rod (Bolton area?) it carried an early NSRA plaque (ala speedfreak) but I never did find a photo of it..
It is the one that has been reworked and blinged up and is on the NSRA stand at the NEC this weekend, although it wears a different number now.

The side windows were black plastic with etchings in, rear was an e or s type but the motor was long gone but I believe it had ran a pre cross flow. The old NSRA plaque is on my tool box.

A Pop Coupe built by Ron Clements from Devon in 1986

Another favourite of mine, ??? FHX, from East London way
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/angliapopman/popFHX.jpg
And now an unusual take on a Prefect, Sedan delivery theme, built by Dave Pritchard from Bury, Lancs. If you look closely you will see a grille from a Model 62 used instead of the "pig ugly original". I'm not sure about the rear arch styling, and maybe it would have looked better with longer Pop doors, but overall its an original looking car!
