One of the joys of being around in the early seventies was the fun in finding Americana bargains for little money. Many were at that stage of being unloved. My first was a 64 Galaxie 500XL 390 bought from a trader in Hampton for £50.00. One owner car had belonged to an actor in the William Tell tv series. Dealer thought he'd had one over on me as it wasn't changing into third. I felt I had one over on him as the gearbox modulator pipe had melted through....A number of others followed over the years.
So what bargains or rarities did you pick up back then?

Not a yank but in '72 or 3 I was given a complete Morris E saloon, free for asking! I sold it for £30 and thought I'd done rather well.Ah, youth and stupidity.

My first car(s) were 2 59 Fords - a RHD Fairlane 500 and an ex-US military wagon from a guy called Peter Edwards - his dad was the caretaker of a school round the back of Cheyne Walk.

The sedan was in an old CC with 'huge fins' £145

My dad gave in £60 for the pair and gave them to me - I was only 15 in 1977.

When I was out one Sunday morning on my Chopper, I saw these 2 fellas at the traffic lights in a 56 Ford wagon. I got one of them I says, do you want to have a look at it?

Yeah, they said and promptly loaded my bike in the back of the wagon and we drove round to our underground garages.

I can't remember their names but one was a tall fella with a 'tache and the other bloke was Polish... well, he didn't actually sound Polish but he had a Polish surname...

First yank was in 1976, 1960 Gullwing. red & white paintwork, white interior, swapped a Mk1 1500 GT Cortina for it, Cortina owed me £155.00, Insurance on the Gullwing was a staggering £68.00 per year.

Owned around 35 yanks since passing my driving test, 50's 60's 70's all the classic years, that's my opinion !
Not keen on 80's yanks & onwards...

Just to make you really sick, here are a few ads I've culled from the pages of Kool Kams, the official mag of the BHRA in the early 60s!

May 1965, the treasurer's 57 Chevy for £150.

March 1965, 1933 Model 40 V8 roadster, hopped-up engine, cycle wings etc...£130.
1937 Model 78 5 window coupe "towable", £30.
These were Ken Cooper's!

February 1964, 1953 Olds Pillarless coupe, Rocket 88 engine, £110.

December 1963, 1948 Allard type 71M drophead, £80 ono.!
