Do you remember the burnouts on the cobbled road outside ? The wooden ramps to get your car upstairs, and one year there was even a crane to get you up there ! And of course the gracious "moonies" when you brought your car back down.
Enjoy . . .

Jerry (?) with the Cobra Jet - had a 'Cobra' in a washing basket going up & down on a windscreen wiper motor. Uragello's Minor. The guy (??) with the chopped Humber Sceptre - he had lowered the whole screen into the scuttle 'cos he could'nt get a screen cut. Boy could that guy drink.
Cars by people I had never heard of - Merv Barnett, Rodney Rich, Dr Bob & Rich Llewelin, I wonder what happened to them?
The mooning, the crane, the water pistols, the drink, & the burnouts.
Simple pleasures, happy times.

Jerry Collett from Devizes way I seem to remember; he had a haulage business. Got a lot of flack from the Mussy boys for 'customising' what was a very rare and desirable bit of kit. Boy, was it quick though (in a straight line at least).

Think the car was called 'Snake Charmer'; wonder if it's still around

really great times, we did loads of work just for a free pass, and when all the visitors left we would stay behind and get the best look at the cars, and when the traders left we would look at all there books and magazines, remember Gerry well, good bloke also had a monster of a pick up, would chuck us all in and give us a ride up the grass hills of Cricket St, Thomas, back to the show, remember opening some sliding doors on the second floor with Jeff Davis, getting out on the roof with a beer or too, and i guy windsurfing in a dinner suit out on the docks........................quality times..

Ian Furey-King deserves credit for these shows, made him one year too

Jerry Collett - that's the 'Snake Charmer' bloke. Went to his house on the Saturday of the first 'Thruxton' Supernats in 1980 (I'm sure I fell in his pool). Did'nt he build a (BIG) truck after the CJ?
Saw him 18 months ago - he buys & sells Bond Bugs now, he had 18 at the time.
Snake Charmer was 'restored' by a bloke from Taunton way (at the time) Bob??? Who runs a really nice racing Topolino now.

The early Bristol shows were some of my favourites from back then. We were really well looked after with free food, lodgings paid for, free tickets to a local diskytech and £100 appearance money which was a lot of money in those days!.
It was pretty hairy being hauled up on that platform. I had my roadster in park and foot pedal almost going through the floorboard because it felt like the car was about to slide off. Scary.

Some pics from the first show, `78 I think.
Paul Haigh with Roger Hamilton wearing his trademark "cowpat" stroker cap. I think Paul had won best in show.

Yup.
All the cars on the second level were hauled up on that Steve. The cradle was specially made for the occasion.
That `landing` platform was about 30 feet off the ground, which we thought was no problem. The trouble was the cradle had to be hoisted about 15 to 20 feet higher to clear the scaffolding and the guys holding the control ropes on each corner kept fighting against each other, causing it to sway all over the place. Not very nice when your sitting in your pride and joy about 45/50 feet off the ground...

Canons Marsh sure looks different today, walk past what's left of those sheds on my way to the office every day.

JH and Humpback should have some more photos of the shows....

The guy standing with Roger in that picture is the late John Barr, who had the unbelievably detailed 'Rhapsody in Blue' Capri.

Dave Holts Devon ran a stock motor and drivetrain, it could hardly turn those 10x15's, next to it is one of Billy Whizzs (Andy Lee) Fordson, with a 440 in it, went in it once never again!
