View Full Version : The 32 - 3window build off entry post

Drakie
02-12-08, 01:14 AM
This Is a kit that you need but as long as its a 32 - 3 window 1:25th it dont matter
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n269/sa341/32pic.jpg
Ok if you want to join our little build off please put your name here so we know who is doing it.
RULES the kit must not be any more than £15 to buy as old and rare kits can be expensive and we are coming upto Christmas. rule 2 we will all have the same kit what you do with it is up to you, as long as you have the same body and floor pan it dont matter, chop it, channel it, drag it, custom it it dont matter, want to change the engine do it! Start date is 1st of Jan then we all have time to get the kit, as if you have to order one that takes time!
Drakie.
You have to use the body and floor pan but other than that you are free to do whatever you want with it. You can use any scrap/sticky tape/paint/other bits as you wish. Remember it's a photo contest though so overall image is crucial.
You can build it in whatever style that you fancy.
The Competition will run for at least 2 months.End date will be in March, to be decided.
Your final presentation will be four photos. We are working on the theory that everybody must know somebody that could take a decent set of photo's for them in this digital age!

These rules are the easiest to work with for a 'first time' event. We look like having more than one prize so will decide before January what prize categories there will be.
This is meant to be a bit of 'rod related' fun so please enter into the spirit of it. I haven't made a model car since the seventies so you are not alone in your apprehension! Good Luck Everyone!
Plumcars.

Please put your forum user name and your name on this post, The Build off will start on the 1st of Jan and run for 2 month's untill March.
Many Thanks.
I will Start,

Below, it says "same body and floor pan", then "same body"

Do we all have to have body and chassis, or just have to have the body?

And, how many entrys is one person allowed?

Has anyone found a source for the kit yet?

Yes Chris as long as its a 3 window 32 1:25 kit it dont matter even if its not a revell kit, as long as we all build the same make/model/year/scale mate

Sorry typo on that one as we have some that are having a go at modeling for the first time and people that build all the time to make it a level plain for all type's of skilled builders the body & florpan must be used as it makes it easy for the beginers and tough for the skilled as its a bit of fun we dont want to set it too hard and make others feel they wouldnt be able to join in.
As it is our first Build Off to make it fair and just and fun for all, plus keep the cost down it is one entry each.
Steve is in talks about the surply of kits with revell for people that are not able to get one, we will update on this when we know more. Chris EnglishEdsel has a spare one if someone needs 1 as he stated on another post so dont worry we will get you all sorted out one way or another ;)

Buying any rod kit in bulk is impossible as apparently stocks are not held in great numbers in this country. Even Revell could not help.

I'd have to check with Drakie but I would think that some modifying/ cutting of the floorpan may be allowable. That doesn't mean that you can take away 90% of it though!

UPDATE:

Firstly it's great to see so many people having a go and joining in. This was designed as a bit of fun and I'm glad that people see it that way. There are obviously some who have built before and others who have not....don't worry, Drakie and I will come up with a few ways to win! On that subject we now have a handful of prizes. Odgie(Shedster) has very kindly offered one of his T shirts...not sure if he means a new business related one or just one out of his wardrobe! ;) Thanks Odgie, very much appreciated. The NSRA have also come up with the goods and offered a selection of things so some rewards for your efforts are available.
On the kit front I have spoken to this guy:
http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/463_1_2893348.html
He discussed things with a Revell rep and is getting in as many as he can. They are rarer than we thought, to buy in bulk proved impossible even going through Revell. Buying one is straightforward enough but in bulk is impossible. Try this guy and if you are still stuck please pm me and I'll try and help. I did speak to him on the phone and explained what we were doing.
So, any more entrants?

Sounds like a great idea. I won't be doing one, but can I make a suggestion - It might be worth mentioning this on the general discussion forum - I don't know if I'm typical but I rarely click on the art forum, and it is tucked right at the bottom of the page. There might be someone who only checks the general forum who wants to take part or provide a prize.

CLASS STRUCTURE.

Ok here's the prize structure made possible by the generosity of the prize givers:

BEST BOX BUILD.
Built exactly as it comes out of the box. No additional or modified parts to be used. Just add paint and glue.

BEST MODIFIED.
Use the body/floorpan and then do what you want to it. You can add other parts or take parts off as you wish.

BEST OVERALL.
Judged from every entry.

BEST PAINT.
Could be quality...could be radical...could be subtle. Judged from every entry.

BEST NOVICE.
We will rely on honesty here! If you really have never built, or maybe one or two many years back then this is for you.

When you submit your photos you will be asked to put in a write up whether your model is entered as box built or modified. If you are entering as a novice you will need to add that also. :)

if you've never built a kit before best thing to do is follow the instructions to the letter.

Obviously results get better with practice but concentrate of having piece nicely painted, in realistic colours using a range of shades.

When gluing bits together try not to use too much glue. Anything that can be glued before painting then do so.

With regards to glues, a styrene glue by the likes of Humbrol will be fine. Take your time, be patient. Trial fit parts together before gluing them. wherever your working make sure you can leave the parts out to dry/set.

The 32's a nice kit, not too detailed or hard to build but gives very nice results for the first time builder.

Thank you for the advice,I've only ever built one kit before and you know that I said I lost some bits from the kit? Well one of the bits I've lost are the instructions, but hey how hard can it be? ( I have some winging their way to me as I type) I plan on just cutting the hell out of the kit and seeing how it pans out, that's the way I work on cars so expect it to be finished in about 5 years:rolleyes: ( thought I'd get that in first)
I'm looking forward to starting and am planing on kicking Liz off her deck to find space, building a model is much more important than that silly work stuff!:D
When I do start expect some daft questions from this end:o

Yes Phil....We just wanted people to use the frame/body as a starting point to level out the field somewhat. Modify it/chop/channel/section whatever...all is allowed.
However..... Just ending up with 5% of the original plastic would appear as 'not in the spirit of the game old boy'.
Really we wanted to keep the rules as loose as possible but have some sort of start point so that the judges could recognise what you all started with. I'm sure you'll all be happy with that.

I asked what the shipping would be for this one from the States, as posted earlier in this thread. The reply was $10 for one, and an extra $2 for additonal ones, but that this was an "estimate only" for USPS First Class Air Mail. That seems a little optimistic to me, as although they don't weigh much, lightweight stuff can get charged on volume. There was a comment in his feedback that shipping was way more than quoted for something. Only real problem at the moment is how much the Christmas mail rush would hold up delivery.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=370104045546

I've sourced one elsewhere now, but even if this was $15 to post, it would still be less than £20 (I just got $1.49/£ on PayPal for something else).

As it is our first Build Off to make it fair and just and fun for all, plus keep the cost down it is one entry each.[/quote]

Posted earlier by Martin (Drakie), so best check with him or Steve (Plumpcars) on more than one car being eligible...

It's one entry each and you need to start with a 3 window. The idea is to make a level playing field with not too many rules. Start date is Jan 1st but as with the real thing there is a plan of action needed before you start so balancing bits up on your bench is fine. thats the kit that my "now a 3 window" started life as....also got the 32 vicky as well..........loads of good bits in them BUT that 32 kit comes with the rear axle moulded into the floor pan and building it as it is shown on the box is not a "simple" job.

on a different tack....are we allowed to use metal components???????....i turned up a moon tank on the lathe at work (back at work for a week)

Paul, the RR kit is now being built by Wiggy....although she wants to modify it and shes never built a model kit before

I might have 'offered up' some bits.. Just to see if theyre gonna fit, like.;)

mind you, its at least given me the incentive to finish this:

Tried him , and ...

...same result :(

Really wanted to start with that kit as like Pauline I've not done one before , only got a day or two left before I'm away for Christmas so I'll keep trying til then ..

It took him (them!) about a week to get back, and then it was an estimate, so I would say just order one. Hopefully by then they will know how much Pauline's was and it will be the same - I think Steve said he'd had kits from them posted for about $15

ordered my second kit from the states for $24, took just over a week to get to me, anyone short of a kit I'dj ust look on Ebay US at Buy It Now Auctions. Use an exchange rate of 1.48 or so and don't pay more than $30 inc the kit and shipping, should take a week maybe 2 to get to you.

Well im sorted now got my 32 kit as an xmas present so i will open it up on the 1st and make a start on it!
If you havent got a kit yet dont panic as if you cant get 1 untill the build off has already started as thats one of the reasons it is being run for 2 months to make it fair time wise for the novice builders to have time to do it ( like me! ) Details of how to submit your build will be posted up after me steve and the NSRA have all had a chat.
You will be able to submit your model photo's/write up between March 1st - 7th.

I hope you all had a fantastic xmas day !!! have the baggy pants come out today due to all that food??!!

With less than a day to go before those tubes of glue get fired up, I thought it may be a good to include a small shopping list of tools etc that the people that are new to model building may not already have. :)

1/ and the most obvious, GLUE.
Glue (cement) comes in 2 types. 1 type is the normal glue in a tube, which is probably easier to use for someone new to plastic kits.
The other type is Liquid Poly cement. Not quite so easy to use, it`s a watery liquid that comes in a small bottle that has a brush on the underside of the lid for applying it.... do not inhale. :):):D

2/ MODELLING KNIFE. Available from model/craft shops and some hardware stores. Use it for cutting parts off of the `tree` (or `sprue`) that the parts are attached to. Also used for trimming and tidying up the edges of parts once off of the tree, as some parts will have `rough` edges that stop them from fitting together properly. Trial fit all parts before gluing. Modeling knives are like scalpels, sharp and dangerous, so handle with care.

3/ TWEEZERS. For holding smaller parts, such as door handles, interior mirror, foot pedals etc while gluing and fitting. They save those fat fingers getting in the way. :)

4/ NAIL FILING BOARDS?. You girls know the ones.;)
Use these for trimming and cleaning up rough edges on parts for a better fit.

5/ TOOTH PICKS. When gluing smaller parts, use a small drop of glue on the tip of a tooth pick to apply it to the part to be glued, rather than smothering the part in a large glob of glue and have it stick to your fingers and anything else you come into contact with.:D

6/ ELASTIC BANDS & CLOTHES PEGS. For holding parts together after gluing.

7/ PAINT & BRUSHES. Model paints are available from model/craft shops as are brushes of varying sizes. Lots of model shops also stock TAMIYA cans of spray paint for models. Some parts need painting before assembly, so plan ahead.

The rest (like the real thing) is down to you and your imagination!.
Take your time, enjoy yourselves and have fun...

Couple of things to add to Brians list
Decent light, the normal light in the middle of the room ain't going to cut it !
A recent set of specs, if you were them, or if you still struggle get one of those nice large lit magnifying glass
And finally .... put some paper down ! or even handier work in a largish box and cut one of the four sides out, this can then be lifted and stored out of the way of tiny hands and mouths

31-12-08, 11:05 AM

for anybody thinking about chopping their top, a modelling razor saw is what you want, but a fine toothed blade in a junior hacksaw will do the job. First model I chopped I did with my mums bread knife ! Mum wasn't too happy.

In terms of lining up the roof. The rear pillars are fine, fronts need to bend inwards and backwards slightly to line up. Re-scribe the mouldings and drip rails, file the cut smooth then add a little skim of filler. P38 is too coarse for models, spot putty like Squadren Green or Revell's gear in a tube are best for slight imperfections.
