One of the first 'proper' shows I went to .....scrounged a lift off a Bournemouth Rod and Custom guy in his Custom Avenger or Hillman .....the sacrifices a 14 yr old kid has to make to get to a show !!
The swedish 5 W. became a Cabriolet on occasion , from memory ....
The green Plymouth was Mike Cobells 'Poison Ivy' ........Westminster running gear.
Seeing Revenge was mind blowing .....is this the year Andromeda was there and Captain Scarlet nearly rolled his Pop in the Street Khana thing ?
I suspect Dave Palmer was wondering if he could drive a '32 in furry Moon boots !!

Wasn't there a 49 or 50 Merc there as well?
I think the owner was virtually blind and his mate had driven it for him!
I seem to remember getting very, very drunk with that lot 'til awfully early in the morning!

Yeah it was dark blue , you can see the front end of it in the 2nd from last of my pictures . I'm sure I've got another pic of it I'll try and find .

How did I miss that - I was looking for it!
I think that was the first time I got drunk! ...and I still keep it up to this day! :)
Cheers Ron!

How about the topless Swedish totty that was wandering around the show & shine ('82 I think)...any pics!
I remember 'giving it large' against Ian in the 'Streetkahna' with my Minor Coupe - having to pour buckets of cold water over it's rad between 'rounds'.

Is that a young Edd Brown I see before me.
I pitched my tent next to Duncan Purcell with his yellow `55 at that show. Most of those Swedish cars were real nice, they didn`t mess about when building rods.
Great times...

From memory it certainly seemed like they were all American built Rods - the quality was fantastic!

After speaking to some of them at Thruxton I was under the impression they built them themselves. They said they had US servicemen from the local bases import any needed parts for them through the air-force services, including dropped axles, speed equipment etc...

From this show, I followed Revenge all the way home till he turned off Richmond way, the noise it made was awsome! just about kept up in my 1500cc Anglia.

Always remember a quote from Ollie Burn at SPR years ago, after he'd come back from some big drag race meet over in Sweden. He was talking about the cars they had over there, race & street & he said it was because "they were all so f*****g rich!!!" Mind you, this was at the time of the 3 day week & the miners strikes here, so anywhere else probably seemed much better off!:D

happy times,,,,edd
Remember the 64 nova blatting around all weekend, my god was it quick, quickest street car I have ever seen, great weekend even got to follow home Jeff Beck in his "Shes a 34"
Maurice, that old metallic Maroon ( Juniper Red I think ? )Plymouth was a Rod and Custom Feature car, was built from the remains of the metallic blue (?) SSR club project car that was shown at the USG show. It was put together by the late All Knellor ( a Southern Roadster ) and he sold it on to a guy from Brighton way.

Yeah, I meant that were as good as anything from the States at that time!
Without question, in the seventies Sweden was a very rich country!

Here are some pics of the Swedish guys when they came to Cleethorpes. The black 34 was mine & the guys moved into my home for a week & did a roof chop on my 34, It was a great week & when I showed them some old Super 8 Rod movies of the 32 Coupe I built, Anders Aslund told us a story about when he went to work for a while in a Californian engineering shop. He asked the guys if there was any drag racing going on at the weekend. They put him in touch with a guy who owned a 32 Ford 5 window. He had a great time with him & it turned out to be Chicago John & it was my old 32 Coupe that Id sold to John when he lived in Manchester. Anders had reckenised it in my pics & John had the 32 Coupe with same Reg & rite hand drive....What A small world. I will ask Mister T to put some large pics of the guys doing the chop.........Cheer`s Santa Fe Bri

Santa Fe Bri, that's an incredible story!
I love the fact they stayed at your house for a week...........maybe got a little bored around the house and thought " I know will give we'll give the '34 a roof chop".
Mighty friendly those Swedes and quite handy with the old hacksaw, brilliant stuff!! http://www.nsra.org.uk/newforum/images/icons/icon14.gif

Hey Nick thats great. thanks alot mate.......Bri
Yes this was the first US Style Run
Why dont we have all the driving games anymore.
Also there was a strict entry policy, a first for the UK.
I went in my "mild custom" Humber Sceptre to the second one, I guess the photo I sent in (to show car was of acceptable quality) was taken from a distance.
It was a real "100 yard car" as kev elliot would say.
Anyhoo I had the worst car there but drove the a** off it for 48 Hours, right alongside Revenge & Andromeda.
Its hard for anyone now to appreciate the "honour" it was for an 18 year old to be in the company of Royalty, in those days you had to fight to get a peek at them through crowds and roped off areas at shows like Ally Pally and Olympia.

http://www.nsra.org.uk/newforum/images/icons/icon14.gif I was lucky enough to be invited to show off my Model A Coupe, there were a bunch of us from the London area and we all met up at the Heston Services on the M4, there we were joined by Wally Barter in his chopped '32 three window, Ed Brown in his yellow '32 five window and a few others. Then after some final checks & adjustments we drove down to Thruxton in a convoy.
When we arrived at the show I think we were all staggered by the finish and quality of the cars that had made the trip over from Sweden, there were probably about twenty cars from Sweden and each & every car was truly superb!
Here's a few memories of that day, The Thruxton Nationals of twenty eight years ago!!

hi alax ,,wow that brings it all back like it was yesterday,,,,,
we,ll have to meet up for a beer after x mass ,,,,,edd
We went to Sweden that year, (me, Chris Bond, John Llewellyn and Hans Peter Wurmli) and it just so happened that some of the Swedes were on the same ferry that we came back over on. The cars were all well built and very impressive. We (me, Ian Sabell nad John Kowalewsky) took the Clockwork Orange to Thruxton and saw the Swedish cars there (more of em than was on our boat).
My only regret is that I had a really cr4ppy camera (remember 110 instamatics -absolutely rubbish) - so although I do have some shots they are not very good.

This super flamed paint job was done by Ingermar Becker, the pic of the 34 Coupe was taken in Sweden. Ingmar came to England in his black 34 Ford Sedan with a beaut fully dressed Flathead. His 34 Sedan now has a flame job as well.........S.F.Bri
