That's triggered a photo memory, I'm sure i've seen a pic of the car as it was in France in either CC or HR&CUK. The brits went to Paris on a run 79/80 and i've seen that car amongst the report pics.

It was a warm sunny day when my brother Russell an I arrived at Charing cross. We were to get the first train to Folkestone where we would seek passage to foreign shores (boulogne). The crossing a smooth traverse of the mighty channels shipping lanes was uneventful, except for the occasional loosening of someones stomach, not ours I hasten to add. Upon arrival we cleared the pre EU Gendarmes. Their nonchalant lifting of nose and scoffing reserved for Brits did not fail.
Once through we walked bemused for several minutes to get our bearing's , I'm not sure if you know this but everything is written funny on mainland Europe( I don't think they know how to spell). I seemed to panic a little, which I always do when abroad "where's to phucking station" I exclaimed. As it happened it was right in front of us.
Tickets or billets purchased we boarded the train. I thought it looked a bit provincial you know not like the euro star we see now, but as if it was only going like a ping pong between a couple of points. Forty six stops later we arrived at Gare de Nord KNACKERED and hungry. We were to be met by Jackie Morale,
I telephoned him from the McDonald's where we were stuffing our faces, funny thing socialism, a McDonald's with waiters, Refreshed and fed we waited soaking up the entente cordial ................

You've missed a very important detail here...

Because the car was cheaper without the mags on it - and since you knew it was to be shod with chrome reverse wheels... You and Russell were both pushing 2 Chevy wheels and tyres each!!!

The blazing early afternoon sun swirled hot dry air all around, a dusty Citroen cruised up and creaked to a halt where we stood. Jackie a well known journo hack hopped out to greet us, pleasantries exchanged he ushered us into the black vinyl rather hot and sticky interior. Off and running we drove at break neck pace darting hither and thither through the cobbled back streets of noisy le grande, Arriving thirty minutes later at a sleepy suburban villa, slightly ram shackle and dilapidated. We disembarked and dusted our selves off. We were then pressed into helping Heave back the double street doors to the villa's courtyard revealing our quarry a rather dusty blue 1958 Chevrolet impala........

...and as the early evening sun swathed the French valley with a soft blanket of delightful orange I reached into my back pocket and retrieved my wallet.Opening it slightly,I blew gently to dispell the small cobweb ...I hesitated.....should I empty this wallet.....I loved the feeling of such a large ream of paper money--no I must,I must,I cannot turn back now. My heart raced, the palpitations increased.
Jackie sensed my uneasiness as I layed down a wad of French francs onto the dining room table and he snapped up the cash as quick as a flash and the transaction was complete.I slid behind the wheel and with a twist of the key the V8 came to life and purred like a cat and it was back to the green pastures of Battersea where my imagination at this time suggested that with a white 'texon' respray with purple fogging in strategic areas and chrome reverse steel wheels,I would be ready to take on the image of my boyhood hero Steve Bolander.Of course this neccesitated the purchase of a blue and white check button down short sleeved shirt which I would wear over a white T shirt and a pair of penny loafers and Levis with the obligatory 2inch turn ups that would reveal a glimpse of white sock. My image would be complete if only I could somehow soon transform the interior from the dull factory upholstery to a plush red and white tuck'n'roll. This would soon become a reality.......

actually what happened next......

noisy le grand lays south east of central Paris , its industrial past means a landscape spattered with small municipal factories now vying for airspace with communal apartment blocks with the Gaelic charm only french state design can proffer, the darkened back streets give way to long straight avenues, something the German machine found quite useful. Our journey relying on out of date routier maps seemed frantic as we made wrong turn upon wrong turn. Finally making the peripherique paris,s m25, an old chevy jousting for lane space with peugeot and renault makes and interesting sight, I didn,t understand most of the hand signals other drivers gave us, must be their highway code. we pressed on , stopping at elf petrol stations locals gawped at our steed, muttering and gesturing and finally shuffling away we presumed in admiration, finally to a6 a straight superb highway carved through northern France we were able to make headway , boulogne by night fall our quest

.....and so it was,the Chevy carried us into Boulogne where we were welcomed by the cool late evening air.It started to drizzle giving the coastal town a menacingly dull cold appearance.... the metronomical rythmn of the wipers worked hard to clear the windshield and at last we were aboard the ferry...I sipped at my tea and imagined the white cliffs welcoming us into Dover,a land in which the Chevy being unaccustomed to would now reside....The ferry creaked and groaned across the great waves of the English Channel....Home again, soon we will be home and our great expedition would come to its final stage...

Hijacking the thread, but does anyone have any photos of Neil from Staines 58 when it had the hotrod stance and the flamed paint - I only got these.
Or Mark Pauls red one finished with scallops. I can't believe all the times I went round there while he was working on it in the road, I never took some better photos!
