View Full Version : My 71 Cuda
mopar_mark
01-12-07, 11:54 PM
Have owned my Cuda for nearly 20 years. I originally bought it for the princely sum of 500 pounds as a non runner & with the intention to get it running & selling for a profit.
I decided too fit new Carb & manifold to the 383, then thought may as well fit new lifters, inspect the heads the next thing I now I had a full engine rebuild on the go.
Next step was to spray the car black with red hockey stripe, which lasted for about 6 week when decided to go Vista Orange. Around the same time I decided it needed to be a bit faster & more race car looking.
A few beers later, Me Paul & Harry had made a flip front, the interior was removed, bucket seats installed & the birth of MPH (Mark, Paul, Harry) Racing began.
The biggest person to help me get to where I am today is Paul Hobby, without his help car would still be in a thousand parts spread across the garage & in the rafters. As although I can fabricate parts & have reasonable mechanical skills, my welding capabilities are akin to Gorilla Snot !:)
This was the downward spiral into faster things to come, next to go was the leaf springs for home made ladder bars & coil over shocks. Things stayed like this for a while till another night after a few beers & next thing I know Shane (Vital Eng) was changing the front end into strut suspension, Rack & Pinion & motor plate.
Car sat in the wilderness for a few years as I became a born again biker & the intro of my ZXR 750 & followed by a Fireblade. For the next 2 years just used to walk past the car & straight onto the bike. As with most born again bikers the spills were inevitable & the pain from crashing seemed to last a lot longer than when your younger.
So the bike was sold & the car was sent to Andy Robinson's to be back halfed, 4 Bar, 9"rear, Ally panelled, Makrolon Windows. I was now the owner of a full on drag car & was also starting to be obsessed with reducing the weight of the car. All the steel parts from the car with the exception of the rear quarters & roof were substituted with glass fibre. Any part that was no longer structural was removed, brackets were lightened wherever possible. Car went from a factory quoted weight of 3,400lbs down to 2,300lbs.
I then knew my old 383 was no longer gonna cut it & started collecting parts to put together a 400 Stroker with B1 Head. As with any sort of racing, you soon start to find out the weakest links & car was gradually upgraded, over & over again. Upgraded Torqueflite was superseded by JW Glide, New converter. Better oiling system, etc, etc.
As much as I enjoyed taking the car to the track, the level the car had reached, it was no longer a RWYB type of car & needed constant maintenance between rounds. My work overseas was increasing & not letting me have the time to play with the car.
In 2006, I decided that I would put the car back on the road & this brings the car to its present state. During the 20 years of owning the car, the price of Cuda parts has rocketed. I still luckily had a lot of the essential parts to put the car back on the road, but hate to think the amount of cash the parts I sent to Spelthorne dump would be worth today:mad:
The B1 motor was sold, along with the enclosed trailer to help fund the new build. After visiting various speed shops in the USA, web site chats & numerous phone calls I finally settled on Engine builder Tim Banning from FHO in Canada & my Hemi was conceived. The birth of my Hemi has somewhat evolved from my initial thoughts, but I am more than pleased with the results.
I cant speak highly enough of Tim & if you were ever to consider going a similar route I thoroughly suggest in checking him out.
Cuda is once gain at Andy Robinsons, having various work to enable car to be road legal. Exhaust, Wiring, another axle upgrade to suit the Hemi, fuel system, etc, etc. Again Andy's another guy who's work I admire & would recommend.
Work permitting & I ever get out of Poland, I hope to debut at Wheels day in 2008. Although its highly likely car will not be painted.
I will try & dig out some old photos & scan to show some of the various guises throughout the years. These below are the most decent/recent I have

Hi Edd,
Yes mate, I know exactly what you got now :), I remember having a good look one day down at Nick Butlers. I was down there at the time with Fatty Baz in his "Gone in 60 seconds" Mustang.
You probally dont recognise my name but I know you from years back, you even took me for a ride in your yellow/graffiti coupe (260ci ?) maybe early 80's :D
In fact was speaking to you at Billing this year, I was in the car with Paul Hobby (5 Window steel coupe)
Be great to see your car again, restored to its former glory

Been a while since I did an update..............
Steering rack moved, as was fouling with bottom Blower pulley
Chassis down tubes moved, as old ones interfered with Hemi exhaust ports
Fire wall modifed to suit larger Hemi head off set
Master cylinder relocated, as interfered with Valve covers
Yeah, theres a pattern here, Hemis are a lot bigger and wider in the head area than my old B1's ;)
Wipers now installed, more MG specials :D
Headers now coated and rest of exhaust system is finally finished, went with 4" system, X pipe & 4 boxes, should quiet things down, not too much though ;)
Had to change rear suspension locating arm to a sliding link to accomadate exhaust boxes, another good part in the bin
New fuel tank is completed, not as big as I would of liked, but for a big car I keep running out of room
Fuel Pumps & Filters now mounted & Fuel plumbing nearing completion. I hope my system design is up to the job. Got more pumps, filters & fitting than Think Automotive carry in stock
New Strange rear shocks should be arriving any day now
Got EFI back after getting calibrated to interface with Racepak dig dash
Radiator modified to suit reverse flow water pump, I'm hoiping this will all aid cooling
Whats next...........
Wiring is about 45% complete, should be done by next week
Decided to put wing on car, just gottta decide what I want
Mount Paul's seat, I mean passenger seat, oh yeah he wants a harness too :D
New propshaft, got all new UJ's, Slider & tubing, so Andy should finish that fairly soon
Throttle linkage, not sure on that one yet :( no doubt Andy will sort it out
I repaired all the Grill ages ago, along with all the lights, but need to make a steel tube frame to give more support.
Finish off plumbing oil accumulator, yeah I know I spent enough may as well gone dry sump :o
Got some new polycarbonate for windows, plus enough to do a couple of times. Who said I was concerned about scratching :D I have the old ones for templates, so shouldn't take me long
Still waiting for the DVLA to come an inspect car to eventually sort out this registration saga thats been going on for months. Don't ask, its along story
Want to change the front struts, but think that can wait till next winter
Thats about it for now, still a fair amount to do, but should be out in May all being well. I'm not in Poland the end of May & have a weeks holiday,so maybe Billing.
Not having a lot of luck posting photos again, as they are either too big, then when I reduce the size their too small. I will have another go later.
Cheers,
Mark...

Tony,
Headers were coated through Andy Robinson, not sure of exact cost as it was combined in the header manufacture, exhaust system, etc.
Think it was about £300 - £350  Yeah, not cheap......

Hi Steve,
No it's still ongoing...... they just tell me I gotta be patient  Last I spoke they said it was getting closer to being resolved, but in which direction I have no idea.

I've had a quick look at your webshots to see if i can help you post bigger pics.the reason they are so small is that you need to increase pixel size.
when you click the box 'to post to forum', next step would be to click on the '600' (to the right of the picture) it gives you a new code to copy, you use this to post a bigger picture.
like this...

I don't think thats gonna happen, Frostys got around 2,500HP on tap, I have just under 1100 @5,000rpm till dyno was slipping, so maybe good for 1,200Hp.Plus Frosty has a lot more years track experience, tuning knowledge than I have. I'm not ignorant, but I dont have the experience at setting car up to suit track conditions, etc.
Agreed, I can over drive the blower, larger injectors, bigger cam, but at most thats gonna bring it to the 1400-1500HP region.
Dont get me wrong, I want to run some good numbers, but I just won't be in his league.
I ran 9.2's with my old B1 motor & torqueflite, but car car has gained weight with all the street gear, Hemi & Blower. (So have I come to that :D)
Realistically car should be good for mid 8's, but achieving it, is another ball game. But wont be for trying

So Krispies Sunday, or Bracknell then Hot Rod and Choppers? Krispies sounds like a cheaper fuel bill. Did the new mapping make a difference?

Put the Cuda on a Rolling road this week, which was an interesting day http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Got the car on the rollers, slight difficulty because of my lowish exhaust, but no big drama. The owner, then proceeded to strap the car down from the rear. When I was advising him where to secure the car, I said "I thought they would be great big straps" he said don't worry these have a 5 ton loading, which put me at ease.
My objective for the day, was to get the bottom end smoothed out & not about getting max power/pulls on the dyno.
Had to increase the idle up to 1200rpm, as 8000rpm when in gear was just too low. Once motor was warmed up, we loaded the dyno & did couple of low end pulls. Computer & dyno was showing we needed to play a bit with fuel Map, also played with timing. Motor seemed to be a lot smoother, although big pulses from the blower dont help, but OK.
Another quick check & we were ready for a higher loading on the dyno, motor warmed up, air fan to feed & cool the car was in full force, Charlie does his dyno checks, everyone is happy & all systems go... RPM's rise, motor starts to get on it, then bang car climbs straight out of the rollers & shoots forward about 12-18" The above sentence in real time was around 2-3 secs
Well, car broke loose from one of those 5 ton straps but no damage done (Apart from my pants http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eeek.gif) Car was re strapped & additional strap was also included.
Another pre check, everyone was happy, thumbs up & ready for a higher pull, obviously some in-trepidation (by me anyway http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif) & squeezed the motor up to 4,500 - 5,000rpm. Spent some time going through the data recording, few more adjustments at the lower end, but mid to upper range A/F was spot on, timing was great, fuel was OK. Think this produced around 750hp to the rear wheels. Power curve on his Computer screen, was more of a steep vertical line, so some more in there http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wiink.gif
Decided to do one more pull, same checks as previous & were off again, but once over 5,000rpm, car was trying to climb out of the rollers & we all agreed that no need to push it.
Charlie didn't wan't to damage his dyno, I didn't want to unnecessarily damage my motor, so cut the run short.
Plus dyno & my converter didn't seem to like each other as there was signs of obvious slipping also taking into account the combination of tyres, not wanting to load the roller, etc, etc. Horsepower for this was down due to the above, will have to check data later to see what the number was.

Been a while since I did an update . . .
A slight change in direction, pictures should tell the story
Finally got round to fitting the front tyres to the new rims, thanks to some additional support from Jerry. Wasnt that bad of a job & not a tyre lever in sight :D

Managed to score a bit of titanium, so used it for making the coil brackets. Didn't need to be titanium, but matched the throttle bracket. Still need to punch some holes in the them, just need to borrow a swage punch or what ever their called.
Throttle also working now

The plumbing is still on going, but nearing the end
My mate Steve turned me up a new fuel pump drive, which I collected today. The original drive bolted to the front pulley & was spacing pulley to far away.

Stunning!:)

Looks good. I don't know how driveable it was before, but will the turbos make it easier on the street (apart from the obvious improved vision :))?

Mark took me for a ride a couple of years ago when it had the blower fitted, it seemed docile to drive until you tromped on the throttle and all hell broke loose! :dizzy:. I would imagine it would still be docile until the revs pick up and the turbos kick in.
I`m looking forward to the next ride already Mark , nice work!...

Yes, hopefully more docile, that being said the Blower wasn't too bad most of the time. Vision wasn't as bad as it seemed, you can see a lot looking out of a letter box, but not when looking in :D

Plumbed 80% of Intercooler to Ice box, progress halted due to waiting for fittings, but these arrived this week, so thats the job for tomorrow or tonight if I get off the PC. My excuse is that I am letting my dinner go down :D
Dropped of trans to Frosty last week. As good as old box was, it wasn't up to handling more hp on a regular basis. Basically upgraded shafts n gears, along with changing Convertor stator n bits & pieces . . .
Finished off Ti coil mounting brackets today, a lot of work for something that doesn't really do anything :D

New fuel pump belt arrived, so now fitted, along with completing the Oil pump to filter oil pipe.
Finally got round to removing exhaust/headers, added another bung (Thanks for welding Paul), as I intend to run Lambda's & dropped off exhaust for coating on Friday. Should be done in 2 weeks.
Still waiting on a few fuel fittings, but shipment delayed, as waiting for rear wheels to be despatched. Not holding up me up, as there always seems to be plenty to do:duh:

Been a while, since I last posted.
I had a few body repairs, mainly the Drivers side rear quarter which had some rust in the lower section, plus I ripped some of the quarter when trying some new rims a couple of years back. So bring the thread upto date....
Finally was able to see n touch my new rear rims, when I was in the States last week. I ordered these back in Jan time & been sitting in my mates for months. Should be here next week

Rear quarter panel now all complete & painted, very happy, although got some overspray to sort out
Finally got a date for taking car for a complete re wire & new F/Inj loom at Jon W. I do most things, but me & wiring don’t get on. I did it myself when it was purely a track car, but was never happy.
All being well, should be complete early July. Roll on the Mopar Nats ;)

I collected the car from Jon's last Tuesday, very pleased, although I have got some its to sort out. Mainly related to insufficient fuel pressure when cranking. I have got a few things to try to hopefully cure the problem. Although I will most likely fit an elec pump purely for priming, starting purposes.
Engine now runs, but still to be mapped for boost. ( thanks to Dave Rowe)
Got the front & rear screens fitted today, thanks to Jerry with his acrobatic skills in juggling his body round the funny car cage to fit the lower rear screen nuts :D
