Great pics!
I remember an evening at Big Gary's flat spending hours looking at photos from the States. Gary, Sandra, Pete, Maggie, myself. Were you the Ken that was there? Would have been mid to late seventies.

Great pictures Ken, I remember all the cars, sadly I never had the fun of cruisin in most of them, but none the less, I did go in a few.
Some of the shots look like they have been taken from the videos that we have from back then....Funny to see in still's
Trevor has pictures like that with you all lined up outside our house in Brixton back in the late 70's, early 80's, it looks like the whole street is full of cars ( Yanks ).
From the age of about 9 years old we had loads of these cars regularly parked outside our house and they were always different, it's amazing how soon you pick up what model they are, who owned them and what year they was, we used to play guess the car when you had all gone, and the same with records too.... you remember the " Krooze brothers " disco in our house, A permenant fixture
By the time I went to my 1st Chelsea Cruise ( 9yrs old ) I could tell you what most cars where as they passed by... How cool is that ? )
Hell, I helped put my 1st 57 Cadillac engine and gearbox in when I was just 11 yrs old...( In the snow ) 3 days before the Chelsea Cruise, we was still working on it the night of the Cruise, but it made it there, I never broke anything or got it wrong when helping out, that was very trusting from Mick Monti ...:D
seems just like yesterday...................
( By the way, yes you picked the right name in the picture, :D )

http://www.nsra.org.uk/newforum/images/icons/icon14.gif Thanks for posting the brilliant pics Ken, it's good to hear from you after all these years!
Those were great times, amazing what automotive activity took place in and around Battersea in the 70s & 80s, especially at arch 63 in Covent Garden Market. Once your day job had finished everyone was getting their cars ready for the Chelsea cruise, or a car show etc.
Thanks again for sharing all the neat pics!
Great pix Ken and altho not involved in the battersea scene I wasnt a million miles away in Streatham, takes me back to early days of the Chelsea cruise

Hello Steve (plumpcars). I am guessing that I might well have been the same Ken that was at Gary's flat. I used to go to America each year from mid to late 70's and took thousands of color slides during the time I was over there. Back then I drove a multi colored 56 VW Beetle which I still have although it is now silver.
Hello Spencer. You say you never had the fun of cruisin in those cars in my pics. Sounds to me that you are more than making up for that now. Are my pics that bad. None came from a video. I am going through the original negatives to see what other photos I have. I can remember going to your house many times but only at night. Will like to see pics Trevor has. Hope to get to see you all this summer.

Hello Alex. Great to hear from you. I have photo's taken at Billing in the early 70's with your woodie in them. (Your car that is) lol.
Hello Tony. Glad you liked the pictures. I have loads more to put up on this site.

Pat,
The last time I saw that 60 was on a film set at Pinewood Studios around 1985/6. They crashed a Lincoln (I think) into the Impala's left front wing. Haven't seen it since and can't remember the name of the film except it was a remake of a film where giant plants attack people. Kind of a comedy horror!

The Garys Shack van , what memories I can remember in 79 when i was 18 working with KEN57 (we were both postmen at the time at battersea do )ken had borrowed the shack van and we both delivered the post in it . Then inabout 82 i got arrested in it at the chelsea cruise for cruising on trade plates ,luckily for me the traffic cop didnt realise that i had the rear brake pipes clamped off as it had no rear shoes in it and i was only driving on the front pads .

Are you sure the brakes were not clamped to do burnouts ! That was a way to do it before line locks i think. I wonder if some tried it on front wheel drive cars and wondered why it did not WORK !

There was a white 60 coupe with a 348 and a really low number, LGB6 or something like that. I went to try and buy it and the owner was pretty rude. I did hear that not long after he died so obviously my curses work! That was around that area, not far from where I live now.

John from the TUS bought the '60 from Milt and did a super nice job of restoring it - its the one in Quentin Wilson's book about American cars, we had it back a second time and it was still decent.

Hello Mike and Steve. The pub in Battersea high street was called "The Woodman". That pub had always been Gary Healeys drinking hole. Still remember the day he came into his shop in Wandsworth Road (Gary's Shack No2) and announced that the new Gary's Shack shop would be right next door to his pub, the Woodman. We all (Sandra. John. Ernie and me) stood in silence while Gary had a huge smile on his face. Happy Days.

Great pics Ken, keep them coming.
Mike, Pete Desola did indeed come from Devon and he also owned a '57 Chevy, a yellow two door but his mate had a green or blue '57 and I think it's the one in the picture. Maybe Steve (Plumpcars) can spread some light on this one, as I think he was a very early Tri- Chevy Club member!
Pete DeSolla also had a very rough 57 nomad in his garage,Ray young bought it off him in the early 80's,he hired a vw transporter beevertail to bring it up from Devon to Sheffield,As we loaded the car it became apparant that Pete, had decided he was getting out of the car scene,as parts, interiors, wheels, glass, piles of mouldings, axeles, motors, the lot started piling up in the garden,he was throwing stuff out of the bedroom windows at one point !We had to take the mudguards of the truck for clearance,we were so overloaded,it looked dangerous ,i doubt very much we'd have got 10 miles today before getting a tug,let alone all the way back to Sheff, its took Ray a while but the marroon and silver Nomad is now enjoying its new lease of life with a top bloke as its keeper,Bry

Hi Ken, absolutely great pics as usual. You were obviously well connected with the Gary's Shack emporium way back then and your pics are a neat reminder of Gary's effort to establish an outlet for the 'Custom Car' revolution that exploded here in the 1970s!
From what I understand, Gary Healey Jnr and his mum Sandra still run and operate the business in Merton SW. London, servicing American cars etc.

Yep still in business
http://www.garys-shack.co.uk/
Hello Alex. Gary sold the 58 Ford wagon to the son of a policeman for £150. Gary was saying at the time that the number plate alone was probably worth that to a dog lover. (I say dog lover. I dont actually mean some one who makes love to dogs. But you know what I mean).

The original 'Shack' was by the railway bridge on Wandsworth Road, Battersea, then moved further down towards Queenstown Road, then to Battersea High Street and then Southfields before going to Little Gary's place now!
I keep in touch with Little Gary either at football or on the phone. He spends a lot of time in Finland as his missus is from there!

Well it was at Walton and some one took a barbcue.
Hello. Thank you every one who has said nice things about my pictures. I have been wanting for years to put them on some web site so that every one could see them. And thanks to the NSRA site. I have been able to do just that.

Ken, brilliant pics as usual. Love the variety, did you take the one of Stanley Baker with his '57 T Bird, that's a scorcher!
There were quite a few interesting cars owned by very wealthy people in the Wimbledon area, I was driving along Arthur Road in the mid 1970s when I spotted a 1956 Ford Country Squire in a driveway, the car belonged to a famous photographer who bought it from new and used it for his work. I ended up buying it for £200 which included a brand new crated Flathead V8 engine that he'd bought for his previous car!

Below-The 1956 Ford Wagon I bought in the 1970s.
http://usera.ImageCave.com/ConRod/Als 1956 Ford Wagon 2.jpg
Back in the day a lot of old American cars had short or interesting number plates, they had very little value then.
Hello Milton, Stewert. Alex and Roger. Were you refering to the picture of Stanley Baker when you ask was it one of mine? If so. No. I took a picture of a picture in a book years ago. Which will also answer Alex's question. That could be a new thread. Pictures of famous people with there American cars. I guess Alex that the £200 you paid for the 1956 Ford Country Squire might have been the going rate back then. Seems so cheap now. But to get a brand new crated engine as well. Cant help thinking why someone who is a bit rich would buy a spare engine.
Roger. I had always thought that the reason that American cars got the short and interesting number plates was because they had to fit in the smaller space that an American plate would have used.
I would agree with you on that Ken. I bought a '60 T Bird convertible Number 2 LPL, it was on the car when I bought it and on the car when I sold. Today that would be transfered sooo quick!
I can remember a few other numbers I had on 'old yanks' in the sixties but i would rather not. LOL

That is interesting Ken, The 55 Chevy was parked there while I visited someone on the estate... Yep it was me, It was actually 1988, and I was 18 years old at the time :D
I had good fun bringing that back from Liverpool, and I still have that plate somewhere, It was an English plate that was a copy of the ( Florida ) American number that was on the front... Can you remember.
I will post my pic's of that car later.
It was NOT mine, but I did use it for a few weeks, those where the days :)
Hello Spencer. Yes. You are right with the year, 1988. My son was born in 1987 and that is him in the pushchair. He now drives a Focus ST. I did try and talk him into getting a real car. You mention that you were visiting some one on the estate. Would that have been when you and Trevor visited me as you said you had on an earlier post?
Anybody no what ever happened to that 40/41? Plymouth Coupe in post 194,remember it in the old mags showing the bodywork biuld up pics showing the front being completly altered.

[QUOTE=Steve Foreman;175471]when I was there I was told that one of the sheds contained all the roller skates from the film "rollerball" now that's a very boring fact !
Any more Photos Steve? I was on that film set with my old 61 Impala bubble top, same as Paul Gatty's but red. I spent 4 days up there at $300 per day and they didn't use my Car!
I offered to swap my ol 61 on the spot when they decided to crash John Colemans old 60 impala, they said no as it had already been used in other takes. They crashed it head on with an old willy's jeep, stood up pretty well I thought.
I didn't park my Impala up the back lot with the other cars, I kept it down in the visitors car park, so it wasn't in you line up photos.
Wonder where it is now?
More great pictures Ken. Just one correction, the "Bun Run" to St Oyth is where Brian's caravan was. St Osyth is just along the coast from Clacton.

Hello Stew. Good to hear from you. What a memory you got. Funnily enough. I went home at the weekend and went thru my books to look for good pictures to put on here. And that book was the one I was after. And I found it to. I will put it on here real soon. You remember arguing over whether it was a Nomad or a Wagon. Something to do with the shape of the rear wheel archies. The Nomad/Wagon is a lot smaller in the picture than I remember so quality wont be up to much.
Hello Mike. Good to hear from you. Lucky you parked next to the price sign for fuel. Kind of puts a date to it. Now that I am seeing my pictures on a screen instead of a small photo. I just noticed my old 57 parked behind your F100. I do have more pics to go on here Mike. For some reason I kept my negatives in two different boxes. I have yet to find the other one. And it's that box thats got the Billing 74 negatives. I'm waffeling now so I will stop. When I say waffeling it means over here talking about nothing important. I guess over there it means a pile of stuff with syrup over it.

pic 2, Colins 59 as found, i remember that day unbelievable,he paid £1000 pounds for it, a 59 eldorado biaritz convert !. I sadly also remember the night we came round the corner to colins house after cruising to see it just starting to go up in flames ,just stood there, nothing we could do. The cause turned out to be a lighted telephone directory thrown thru the roof after they ripped it open.

Battersea Boys garage.
Amazing Ken, thats the 59 4 door hardtop I bought in Cranleigh and will be forever indebted to Gary Keirville who towed it home for me on a home brewed single axle trailer towed by his Westminster. We got tugged by some ******* motorcycle cop who nicked him for being over weight!
"I don't like the look of that... I'm going to take you to Dennis!" the ****y Bar-steward said!
Thanks and sorry again Gal!

Hello Simon. I wasn't with you when you came back to find Colins Cadillac ablaze. But can you remember where you had been earlier in the evening? Colin told me that just before he was to get the 59 Cadillac back to his home. His dad (talking about Colins 56 Ford) said "Why do you have to have such a big car". Colin replied "If you think that one was big, Wait till you see the next one". Great times.

Hello Ken, I cant remember where we had been,as you know, most nights we were out and about with no real purpose. After the fire we had the car trailored back to our garages in battersea and there it sat until the insurance paid out funny but it still drove . After helping colin with the insurance he offered it to me for £500, i said no because i was saving up for my mercury
