i go about doing a drawing

thought i`d show you how i go about doing a sketch...this is going to be done in Prismacolor pencils on a black card...12" x 17" approx. in size...

with the subject matter chosen, in this case a fantastic looking 5 window done in gobfulls of flake (owned by bo bertillson i think)

i`ve sketched the image out rougly onto the card freehand using a pastel pencil..i can alter things as i go by just rubbing away the pastel with a soft cloth

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/a.jpg

heres a closer look at the sketch

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/a.jpg

these are the tools of the trade...prismacolor pencils...they`re not cheap to buy, anything from £120 to £160 depending on where you buy them (ebays the cheapest)...soft cloth for blending, cotton buds for blending small parts, sharpener and erasers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/1-1.jpg

with a selection of reds and a white pencil i start laying in the colour and highlighting the reflection and flake...flakes good to draw

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/2.jpg

i keep adding more colour while blending using the soft cloth...i`m lefthanded and for once in this picture i`ve actually started on the right as not to keep putting my hand over the finished bits...not always the case though as i get bored easily and start flitting around the page

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/4.jpg

the more white i add the more it begins to pop off the page...the begininig of the rear wheel

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/5.jpg

rear wheel complete and now the trunk lid...with a bit of pinstriping as well

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/7.jpg

front tyre, grille shell and glimpses of the motor go in ...not too much left now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/8.jpg

cotton bud used to blend the front wheel

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/9.jpg

the finished piece....just about an hour and half start to finish

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/10.jpg

its as easy as that:D:D

That's great. It's really enlightening to see how another artist works, particularly when the end result's so good. I know it looks so easy when you break it down to a few steps but we all know it's not.
I may post one of my own how to's one day.

Very very nice Tim and I like the use of Tubigrip bandages to blend with too.:)

Amazing how those pencils 'cover' on black.

Tim...That is truly amazing...You do it so naturaly and matter of fact...That sir is real tallent...

Steve, you are an amazing artist in your own right and just because you cant draw doesnt make it any less artistic what you do...

Tim...sorry to hear about you having to go under the knife again mate... If you get bored give me a shout.

the tubigrip is really good for blending...it also holds a lot of graphite...i`ve got old ones that are literally black from graphite and i actually use them to lay down `colour` on large areas...the same with old cotton buds

chrome is like i said earlier a reflection of the surround.....where people go wrong is not drawing what you actually see no matter how wrong it looks...i love drawing from photos with lots of reflections in them...a black car is not black..its full of reflections in the paintwork, again however wrong it looks put them in

as below

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/surfmonkey/blackandtheaceofspades.jpg

vonmerkin...he was called dobbie when he was a puppy cause he literally looked like dobie from harry potter...hes grown up now but he was recently responsible for parts from my `32 kit going walkabout

here he is in the snow last week

jez post up some of your stuff

thanks for the comments elmo...just hope the next op isn`t as painfull as the last one...

Hi Tim
I am well impressed like every one else.
Your first instruction was to sketch it free hand, this is exactly where I go wrong, I find cars difficult to draw because of that strange combination of straight lines, curves and angles.
To get over this I draw complicated pictures by lining it out with a grid to get the proportions right.
Do you ever use this method or is it just for amateur's like myself ?
Cheers for sharing your skills.
Tony.

i`ve tried all methods for laying out the drawing....if the grid method works for you use it...i do it straight onto the paper cause i find it quicker...another method which is good if your serious about drawing is the projector...i saw them in hobbycraft last week but they`re not cheap...another method if its small is to print out your pic your drawing onto normal printer paper thats thin and shade the back with a soft pencil turning it into like a carbon paper and then trace around the image....i`m not sure it would work on the size i do as i`d be using most of my soft pencils just for that.....give `em all a go

it's the sketching out I hate......it either goes right first time or ends up looking nowt like it should....I've used the grid method but don't like it at all and have done the soft pencil on the rear of a print thing too....that's the best way if you can't get it right by sketching

I'm interested to hear that you use a cloth to blend Prismacolours Tim. I bought some last year and am still trying to get to grips with them properly. They seem to get very 'waxy' if you lay a lot of colour down. I'll have to try the cloth blending.

Better yet, we'll have to get together at some point and you can show me !

Its 'Fimo', its a bit like plasticine that sets in the oven. I used to make a lot of these, but this is the only one I kept. I wish I still had the time to make stuff like this, but Im too busy doing other stuff! (normally other stuff that doesnt include playing guitar, which I should be doing.):o
