Well done. Good few pages. Many may want to leave our shores but there must be alot of US rodders out there planning a trip to the UK after that.

I feel the ONLY reason that they have taken the event seriously is down to the superb atmospheric photography. With 'normal' photography it wouldn't be there . Well done to you both for getting published and pushing forward the British scene

Why do you say this Kev? Why wouldn't it be there?

I too have contributed to OSR and CKD and so has 'Odgie (Shedster) and the January/December issue had back to back features from each of us.

Alan Mayes the Editor is always happy to run UK stuff as long as its fits within the mags general remit. Alan likes Nealies work and has run Hayride features from him and myself but its not a pre-requisite to running a feature. In fact Ian Shipley who has worked with John Knight (Hot Rod Showcase) has recently sent a portfolio of British rod shoots to Alan and I happen to know he is currently reviewing them.

Probably the only reason they don't run more British shows is very few cater for OSR/CKD's particular reader demographic.

Exactly what you put Keith, not their remit and photos of , careful now, street rods just wouldn't fit. It's what the photos show and how . I don't see any photos of the V8 Sierra ,late model Yank pick ups or Outlaw VW flat fours in the write up ;) :) .

Well obviously not, but I'm still at a loss to the point you're making.

It's all 'period' looking stuff especially in black and white. If the report was full of street rods they wouldn't have featured it in your words ... "Probably the only reason they don't run more British shows is very few cater for OSR/CKD's particular reader demographic." Nor does the HRD or Nostalgia Nats UNLESS you only send them what they want to see , in a manner suitable for viewing by their readership. Ie is the article truly representative of the event ? Judging by the reports and moans at thr AGM the answer must be no as I'm sure Alan will agree .

Whats wrong with sending them what they want to see?

By showing the early stuff that 'fits' the magazine you're showing that the 'traditional' scene is healthy in the UK and we have events that cater for this type of vehicle.

You could just have easily targeted Muscle cars or VW magazines the same way. The fact that the HRD does encompass a broader spectrum than shown in OSR doesn't detract from the event for those that enjoy it each year and its not like we're trying to show the Americans that we are superior by having a more cosmopolitan approach is it?

Anyway, your first comment was regarding the style of photography, not the subject
matter, which is why I queried it.

I'm curious to know what people were moaning about at the AGM regarding the drags.

Same thing as gets moaned about every year Darren, not enough of the' right stuff 'on the track . Hence my comment about the write up .

Keith, nothing wrong with sending them what they wasnt to see, same as nothing wrong with me pointing it out.

Thanks all and thanks Alan. Funny how a couple of months back the "arty" style of photography that some of use do got a bit of stick, and yet it's pretty clear from everyones feedback that it actually works. 8-)

OSR and CKD do like a certain style, and due to that careful selection of photos is essential. They do like to show how big the UK scene is, and what better than the busiest weekend at Shakey we've seen in a long long time. Great work by everyone involved, especially the punters!!!

Part of the art of any good contributor or freelancer is to 'target' what they send to a magazine. I know the editorial stance of all the various magazines I write for, and it's not unusual for me to send two quite disimilar features of the same event, each one covering the relevant aspects in differing words and photos suitable to that particular mag. H*ll, I've even had Drayton Manor published in OSR/CKD, and not a Ford Escort in sight.... :)

Indeed. The clue was in the event and magazine names all along, *grin*

It's just that some magazines chose to show the yank tanks, the muscle cars and the VW's where as it's always been billed as a hot rod event, so I sent them the rod selection.

It's pretty easy to cover this event for 2 or 3 magazines, all showing it in a different light depending on how you write it or what photo selection you send them (they make the final cut, I just gave them the ammo), but for me it was the rod event of the year and with that turn out, i think it's definitely given the yanks a run for their money.
