You've spoilt my whole week now; I've just paid 12 Euros each for a couple of Kinzo angle grinders in a French hypermarket.

Just buy yourself a plasma cutter, then you can make holes to your hearts content, no broken chuck/drillbits/etc etc.....!!!!!!!!

Did you find someone for those skins????

I bought a cheep grinder from the autojumbe at Beulieu a few years back and fitted a cutting disk but the cutting disc lasted longer than the gearbox on the grinder - bargain!

Yep, can't understand the people who jump on forums asking which grinder they should buy in the £60-£70++ region, when a £10 cheapie will exactly the same job, and if you bust it, or a mate borrows it forever, you can just pick up another one.

My Morris was built using two Screwfix 4 1/2" Ferm grinders, £9 each, and they both still work prefectly well to this day, and they're now some five years old. I had a cutting disc on one, a grinding disc on t'other, to save swapping wheels a hundred times a day when fabricating.

I was going to do the same paul to save changeing discs the one i have is ok, so one can be stashed for a rainy day !

I think to be honest, it's the way we use them, if you use them like they say on the box i.e. light grinding/finishing--cutting aluminium or light weight gauge, then they will last, they'll last a life time. You use them aggressively, all the time, cutting quarter plate, grinding welds, etc etc then your gonna need a decent grinder, thats when your cheepoids bug out. HUH what do I know.

Have you lot not been to tescos? They do angle grinders and loads of other useful stuff dead cheap. My tesco angle grinder is still going strong, if it busts i'll take it back. They don't have a dedicated power tool staff member and the rest don't know what to look for lol.

I bought a Rolson version of a dremel and it was so horrible I put it in the bin to force me to buy a decent one when I need it!!! Some tools I'm really fussy about.

Fed up of the cheap power devil, rolson etc packing up . It seems a lottery on how long they last, had a black and decker professional that lasted 10 or more years. I've got a bosch that feels good to use, so have just bought another two for £27 quid each.

People buying loads of cheap junk.
Chinese economy growing in leaps and bounds.
Thousands of jobs disappearing from UK and Europe.
Oil at highest prices ever, and petrol at £5/gallon.

Hmmm, wonder if there's a connection?

Yeah, I know the feeling, trying to drill 20mm holes in thick steel plate with a Asda 6 volt battery drill......

If you look after your tools, use them properly, they'll look after you. If you abuse them, well, you know the rest.

What good's an angle grinder that can't cut RSJs? If your mate recommends his angle grinder, nick it an' paint it pink!

Seriously, my B&D 5" grinder (750kW) feels like it could cut an RSJ but the poor lead/grommet and safety cut out switch means you can start it, but it won't stop unless you unplug it! Not good, I know. I must admit a trip to Maplins sounds temptin'. Though, for less than £8, a roll of insulation tape and a spliced in cut out switch should do the job. Saves a little bit of planet an it's what a handy hot rodder should be able to do, no?

NO !!! saved our welder the other day when his sleeve got wrapped around the cutting disc and he couldnt get to the switch, hanging on a lead would have been worse !!

locking switches on grinders should be banned, seen a bloke loose a thumb because of one stuck on.

One good thing about B&D is that you can buy spare parts for them! I bought a new switch and cable socket for my 20-year old 4-1/2" angle grinder - OK I could have bought a pair of Rolson ones for that money, but I know mine has survived more than one flight across the garage, and fallen off benches and frames on many occasions and still works great.

Friend of mine had the disc cutter run round the back of his head, painfull wasn't the words he uttered! I've removed the lock on facility on all my grinders, dont see the need for them and had one stick on once, that was once too often!
Only have to look at the picture to see why they should never have them, why would you want to lock it on anyway?

no probs to report with cheap grinders here - my kwik save (yes really..!) 15 quid grinder, complete with 10 cutting and 10 grinding discs is still doing the business 5 years on, used it last week to chop up a load of 2' box section tyre racking
do have issues with cheap drills though, and spanners that snap aren't much fun either!

Judging by the 'seams' along the back of his hand and wrist I'm thinking he may have had gloves on when he decided to do his stunt, whatever it was. Gloves pulled tight, dug seams into his hand, jammed grinder, eventually released it when he noticed his hand falling to bits. ;)

We used to have some grinders at work where the on/off was a small toggle switch buried inside the butt end of the grinder. Almost impossible to operate with gloves on in normal circumstances but if you were in a rush..... :(

When I did my engineering apprenticeship, all engineering and Electrical apprentices has to go to the Engineering Union headquarters where they had a afternoon of Horror showing pictures just like that and far worse, It certainly made an impression on me, I never wear Long sleeved Loose or unfastened clothing when working any sort of machinery, including grinders, and I only wear gloves for welding, The problem with gloves is if they catch you get NO warning as there is no feeling in them, same as cuffs on shirts and overalls, ties, gold chains and rings, I still remember seeing one picture of a very pretty young girl untill the picture rotated to other side of her head, half her forehead skin and flesh was missing from her forehead and scalp, all caused by a pillar drill because she got her hair caught in the spindle. My mate slipped when going down a ladder on the side of a machine, caught his wedding ring on a head of a bolt, the ring came off alright complete with all the skin and nail all held on his finger by about a 10mm circle of flesh on his fingertip, how far did he slip, probably no more than 8"
The first day I started as an apprentice the tutor in the induction centre said, and I remember it well, "Machines do not feel pain---no mater how loud you shout they will not stop because you are hurting---BE CAREFUL" Thats stuck with me for over 35 years

The £9 one I bought 3 years ago gave up the ghost in spectacular style at the weekend with a big cloud of smoke!!! so just been out and bought 2 black and decker grinders [one for grinding and one for flap discs] from 'Godfreys' for £18.99 each they seem alright and as they are B&D should be.

Hmmmm, good luck with that.

I used to get thru one black & decker grinder a year till I bought a Bosch one 5 years ago.
Even the additional £9 Kinzo one I bought 3 years ago has done better.

I've mentioned before about Machine Marts own, about £30 with switch at rear, not on top or side that most seem to be nowadays. Gotta be safer. So impressed I've just bought another to stop having to change discs.

Well recommended

Was a big fan of quality tools, snap-on, dewalt etc but having them all nicked makes you think twice. Cheap tools in a scabby box are not so tempting to the *****'s of this world, plus with several cheapo spanner & socket sets I can always find the size I want !
3 grinders from B&Q at a tenner each, one to cut, one to grind an one with flap disc, makes sense to me.
Cheers, Simon.

That is one of the reasons I wasn't tempted.
I normally use several £9.99 grinders after splashing out on a £96 Bosch one years ago to find it broke after just over 12 months.
This was from DIY, not commercial use, and I wasn't impressed whereas I've had the £9.99 ones die and haven't "batted an eyelid" - just got another new one out of the cupboard.
BTW I have a 4" B&D grinder I bought 30 year ago that is still in GWO.
I have fitted two replacement switches as dust seems to clog them up and a set (not really needed) brushes as I had them lying around when changing a switch.
