Attack it with a grinder; cast iron makes darker red sparks, steel brighter yellow ones.
What part is it?

Another way is to rub a patch off with some wet n dry till it's shiny. Clean it off with some solvant so there's no 'dust' left, then rub over the patch with your thumb or even some white paper. Cast iron usually has 'free carbon' so it comes off like a pencil, steel doesn't. NOTE: this isn't fool proof.

One way to tell is file a patch clean, Cast iron is Grey and steel is Silver in colour, With the filings that have come off the barrel, rub them between your fingers, Cast Iron will leave a grey powder in your fingers and Steel will leave nothing,
Of coure the Barrel could be cast steel, just to add to the confusion

Cast iron old chap , and an aftermarket big-bore barrel will be **** iron at that :D

Yep. Barrels are never cast steel. Iron has a graphite conrent which gives a bit of a self lubricating quality. A steel cylinder would be too prone to seizure, unless it had an iron liner, which would make the use of steel pointless.
