Hi

To get the rover v8 oil pressure up easily.
It is quicker to remove the dizzy and fit an oil primer bar,you can make one or rimmer bros sell them.
Fit this into your electric drill and spin the oil pump, this will prime the oil pump up very quickly, keep the drill running till you see oil coming from the rocker shafts on both sides.Replace the dizzy on its marks and fire it up.

with laying the van off the road for a long period i have to do this to ensure the oil has primed all the engine.

The pump can drain back, and yes you can prime system, the problem is if the pump has drained back the pump will need to be opened and filled with Vaselene, if the van is going to tbe laid up but accessable, start it up on a regular basis, Its not certain that the pump will drain back but it does sometimes happen. I have started rover engines after a couple of years without having to prime the pump.
and another thing when priming the pump with an electric drill, you will pump for AGES even before you see oil at the rockershafts as rovers rely on a Volume type system rather than a Hi Pressure system so with the electric drill you may struggle to get the oil up there, I normally have a gauge fitted and when I see 40lbs up there that will do for starting the engine
