Looks good Marcel but you will have to key it all before overcoating, If you had decided on colour you could of gone wet on wet which would of saved you a lot of work :(

Thanks Dennis, yes very pleased with how its turned out. I just need a carb plate adapter to finish it off.

Thanks Steve. I haven't a clue as yet what colour it will end up. I did it more to seal it as it may be a while before I do sort it out and again thanks for the tips

I was thinking of a flake and gold or a green were at the top of the list although I know green has been done a few times now I haven't seen a gold one. Then again that maybe a good reason to do it??

I took the grill and whats left of the inner wings back to bare metal and resprayed them with epoxy primer. As a novice with a gun I found it easy to apply and is giving me the confidence to apply my own top coat when the time comes

I will be taking the wings and floor panels back to bare metal also to recoat them with the epoxy but the rest of the body will have to stay as is, as it's too big a job now as all the repairs and filling has been done.

Just a bit of an update as not much happening at the moment as waiting for some parts to arrive.
The drivers door hinges were knackered and very sloppy. luckily while visiting Paul (Morris 460) a little while back he gave me some redundant hinges he had. I had the bits to replace the bottom but not the right handed one for the top, so I drilled both sides of the hinge out fitted a helicoil to the bottom hole. Then took an 8mm sheeting bolt, rounded off under the head, took the head size down with a file then finished it off in the drill stand. I then wound the bolt through the hinge and turned it all the way down, cut off the excess, welded the hinge back in and hey presto it works at treat which is good as I've been struggling to get hold of replacement hinges.

I bought a classic mini wiper and an extra long rack wire (not sure what its off).I cut off the swaged ends of the original metal rack sheath and using some 10mm plastic tubing made up a flexible sheath. I then made up a bracket to mount the wiper motor behind the dash. I then fed the rack up the windscreen post so that the original top mount for the wiper could be used. Due to the length of the rack I have enough to fit a second wiper if I think its needed.

Cheers Allan, its good to be doing something again.

Hi Steve, I don't know Steve they are side repeaters from a C max. I'm not sure but I would imagine the originals are about 5 watts not sure if they come in a higher rating? if there's an issue with the brightness I could look at converting them to LED may be.

I like the recesses for the indicators, legally they have to be 21w but many people have side repeaters fitted. High output LED's would be a safer option though.

Thanks all, As I said it's good to be doing something again. its good to have people like Steve around as I hadn't given the rating a thought. I think LEDs should be easy enough to sort out, if not I could easily convert the back to take 21 watt and just use the lens as I like the shape and size. It will also give me something else to work on! Yes Mark I must own up, its a pure copy of yours but I do think it really tidies them up.

recess for indicators look great, some people hide a higher wattage lamp out of site, therefore the bi-metal in the flasher still works with the lower wattage indicator lamps, front indicators are not "as " important for others to see as rears imho,

if you go with leds (or even with the stock side repeater bulbs) you'll need an led flasher unit. they don't care about bulb wattages and still flash at the same rate regardless. only a couple of quid on ebay (from china), i've used loads with good success (i usually buy about 5 or 6 at a time to save postage costs).

i use these flasher units on most older cars regardless of whether they have stock wattage bulbs. i find the constant flasher rate to be safer for plebs not used to our cars.

I decided to tackle the problem of my gearbox mount as I couldn't use the poly ones I had as the engine is mounted on hockey pucks.
I made up the crossmember http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3207_zps949d592a.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3207_zps949d592a.jpg.html)

Then took a matching puck to the fronts and cut it to fit.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3208_zps49e2f78d.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3208_zps49e2f78d.jpg.html)

it then fits in like this. As soon as I get a chance I will measure up and make the chassis brackets ready to be installed when the engine is ready. Hopefully by using the same puck and sandwiching them as the fronts I won't have any issues.

I've decided to try and convert the front indicators to 21w as apposed to 5w. I got a small electrical enclosure and made up a bracket to attach it to the wing. After a bit of work ended up with these.

I will seal it up with some neoprene seal to keep the box water tight.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3214_zps87ba8940.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3214_zps87ba8940.jpg.html)

A small mod to the back of the indicator unit and it all fits lovely. I may fit a piece of bright stainless to act as a reflector.

Thanks for the comments lads, I hope it works as good as it looks! Its not progressive as it seamed a bit more complicated to get it set right. I will be replacing all the cap heads for button heads in the future. I also have some PTFE bushes and spacers that I will fit in place of the washers between the various linkages for a smoother action. Apart from the return spring its all done

Nice linkage Marcell, it's not progressive is it? Cheers. Tim W.

Marcell`s carbs have vacuum secondary bores Tim. By linking the 2 primary bores on each carb, as Marcell has done, he is effectively running the 2 carbs as 1 four barrel carb (2 bores off each carb = 1 four barrel carb), until he floors the throttle hard at which point the vacuum secondaries open and all 8 bores come into play....at which point his car is off like a scalded cat. With this setup Marcell should get good mileage and good performance, the best of both worlds! :thumbsup2:.

I'm almost finished on the engine with just the ignition to sort really. I've got a front pulley and auto shifter on order so I can do the alternator mount next and then start looking at the gearbox.

the maxster
16-03-14, 10:21 PM
After a quick measure up once the manifold and carbs were mounted it was evident that the rear carb would foul the bulkhead. So I made up a recess and welded it in. Picture shows it with some filler that just needs sanded back to give a good finish. I got a shifter from the states but didn't like the brushed ali finish of the cover. So I've painted it in satin black which matches the handbrake finish, well it will when i take the rubber off it. I am looking for a ball handle with 1/2" unf thread if anyone has one as the "T" handle fitted is for left hand drive. I will be mounting some of the switches on the stainless mount as the shiifter is fitted over to the left of it which can't be seen in the photos. I will need to sort out a neat port for the cable to enter the tunnel next as apposed to just a hole.

I took advantage of the good weather today to get the engine and gearbox back in the car to redo the gear box chassis and exhaust mounting brackets. The cut out in the scuttle worked out well as there is plenty of room now for the rear carb.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3416_zps2c94f39d.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3416_zps2c94f39d.jpg.html)

I got hold of an nippon denso alternator so I need to make up brackets to mount it. When I trialed it to see where best it would fit I couldn't find any room anywhere where it didn't foul something. I think I will have to remove the 1" vertical brace bars I fitted to get it in that area. I am a bit reluctant to remove them as they were there to give a bit more strength around the strut top mount area. I will have to see If I can put some strength back in once the alternator is in place.

Why not make a strut brace and mount the alternator off that?...or use the bar to add support when you have removed the downward ones(a lateral brace would be better here anyway imho)
Strut brace could be made to look cool not a modern looking thing.

sounds a good solution, keep the strength and find room for the alternator down out of sight. :thumbs_up_smiley:

Marcel is your motor mounted on poly bushes ? if so you could mount the alternator on the chassis somewhere, you could also mount it backwards if it helps

I agree with Ross, a lateral brace running between the 2 strut top mounts would give more strength where needed Marcel, it could also be made bolt in for ease of motor removal and leave plenty of room lower down for any alternator mounting...

Hi Ross, Brizey, Neil, i was always intending to fit a brace but needed the engine in as I didn't want to foul the water cross over. I was going to weld it in as the front legs have to be removed to get the engine in or out. I could remove the uprights to get some access but I may need to make a spacer to go behind the crank pulley to keep it clear of the block also

Marcel you say pucks but do you mean they are proper hockey pucks, if so there will be virtually zero movement as they are extremely hard, If you meant they are early ford rubbers they won't take the weight of a hemi anyway. they will gradually squash outwards

you did know an alternator can be mounted backwards so the pulley is at the back and the main body is in front away from the engine? they work turning both ways.

the maxster
31-03-14, 10:30 PM
Yes Steve they are actual hockey pucks, they do seem fairly solid, apparently they are what is used as the original mounts are non existant nowadays. I could mount it on the chassis with a bit of flex built in just in case? Hi Neil i did read on the forum that the alternator can work eather way. It could be the way to do it, thanks

I've also mounted alternators backwards a few times,
for those who've never done this be sure to apply some locktite to the nut that holds the pully on as when the pully turns in the opposite direction it will try to loosen the pully nut.

I managed to get a fair bit of time in the garage this weekend so i took the opportunity to refit the gear box cross member I remade with the hockey pucks to match the engine mounts instead of the poly ones i had made originally. I also re made the exhaust mounts so that the bobbins are in compression. All is done but it is a struggle to get it all in now as there is so little room. As can be seen I will be finishing the exhaust just before the rear arch.

decided to tackle the front brace. As i had said before I wanted to weld it in place which is what I did but then realized that I couldn't pull the front off in one piece to get the engine in or out as the ends were wider than the space between the A panels, doh!! So I've now cut the brace in to two and will use a spigot type of joint to bolt them together again. I thought it looked a bit plain, so made up the gussets just make it a bit more interesting. some of the welds are a bit messy as they were porous for some reason. I will re do them when I get the bars off again

Thanks for the kind words lads, I'm getting some movement back ok the problem is my back is affecting the nerves in my hip area so sometimes I can't sit, stand, walk or do anything. The consultant did say it may go this way for a while before it gets better but its far better now than what it was. On the alternator front I will persevere with trying to mount it at the front more for the ease of it all. Once I work out the mount I think it will be ok. I'm also looking at making up the thermostat and housing using chevy parts as the Hot Heads ones are pretty expensive , although the housing and hoses will have to be made it should be doable

The adjusted is made out of ali hex with 8mm rose joints which was destined to be a track rod on a go kart. It's still very snug in there and i will have to modify the engine mount slightly to get the wiring plug in without snagging.

Finally got the thermostat finished!
I got a 2.75" X 2.75" x 4" bar on Flea bay, A very nice local machine shop milled out the hole for the thermostat to sit in. I then lined up one off the head water outlets and drilled the 19mm hole for the water passage and drilled the mounting holes

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3507_zps0f7fa02a.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3507_zps0f7fa02a.jpg.html)

The side inlet is for the water passage from the other head this has been tapped for 3/4 bsp. the thermostat sits in like this

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3505_zpsd7d6ac70.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3505_zpsd7d6ac70.jpg.html)

The cover / outlet is from a chevy as is the thermostat. the hose fitting is 12an, which will mate to the other head via a length of stainless braided hose and alloy hose fittings when they arrive.

Hi all, I can't believe its been so long since my last post but here's a bit of an update.
The thermostat has now been connected to the other cylinder head with some alloy fittings and hose which I will replace with stainless braided when funds allow.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3601_zpsb3d8313a.jpg[/URL]

I've always loved the look of the ali bomber seats, That and the restricted space for a more modern seat inside the Pop prompted me to have a go at making them.
I started off with a wooden buck for the base and a cardboard template for the back.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/unnamed_zpsd1a08b6f.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/unnamed_zpsd1a08b6f.jpg.html)

I cut out the base and back, formed the base over the buck and rolled the back to fit. As I can't Ali weld I decided to rivet the two together with solid copper rivets

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3726_zps9ae13599.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3726_zps9ae13599.jpg.html)

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3729_zpsa40d5da0.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3729_zpsa40d5da0.jpg.html)

I will get the two stitch welded in the future just to ensure the strength. I couldn't do a full wire in rolled edge but I have managed a sort of semi rolled edge which seems to have stiffened it up ok. I made up a swager for the seat belt slots and the trim on the leading edge of the base.

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3966_zps75d9f778.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3966_zps75d9f778.jpg.html)

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3965_zpsfe8424e6.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3965_zpsfe8424e6.jpg.html)

http://i1259.photobucket.com/albums/ii557/marcello212/IMG_3964_zpsf030b824.jpg (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/marcello212/media/IMG_3964_zpsf030b824.jpg.html)

I have started to polish it but I'm struggling to get rid of some of the scratches left when I rolled the back. I need to sort out the mount now but as yet I'm not sure what way to do them. I will be upholstering the base and the center part of the back once I have decided on an interior colour.
