View Full Version : Pop`s evil twin !!!
Ok ,This is about a project that was started nearly 12 years ago. I have always wanted to build something to use on the street aswell as seeing some 1/4 mile action, The main idea was that it had to be powerd by a V8 and to do as much of the work by myself as possible. Some of you might have seen build up pics on the old site or other web sites, But for thoes that haven`t i ll post some pics on here of the work done so far. It was early 96 while at the Newark autojumble i stumbled across some pop wings , so asking the owner if he had the rest of the car i found out that he had the complete rolling shell, ( infact it was none other than Mr pop parts plus) anyway a few weeks later i had the car and original chassis transported to my home in Lincoln. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/pop.jpg once in my garage the first thing i did was to chop 3" of the roof , The car was then taken to where i work as a steel fabricator , to be stripped from the old chassis and a new one made from scratch http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/popbody1.jpg The body was set at ride height with the wheels in place to work out the hub to hub dimentions for the front and back axles. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop057.jpg
I always liked the IFS set up with unequal wishbones, so with the new wheels set at the same track width as the original wheels i had a dimention to work to , I made a jig to support the hubs in place at the correct camber and caster angles and worked inwards fabricating the upper and lower wishbones . http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop005.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop002.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop006.jpg The steering rack is an old MG miget shortenend to place the inner pivot points in line with the inner wishbone pivot points

Quality
Thanks for all the feedback guys, good to know i am going in the right direction :-) Ok after the front axle was ready it was time to start on the rear, I decided to go with the tried and tested 9" ford . I got hold of a 9" axel from someone dismantling american cars in coningsby ( not sure if he is still in business smurf, it was about 10 years ago)The axle i got had the pinion ofset from the centerline when used in the original car, but as i was chopping it down i wanted to finnish with the pinion on the center line so before cutting i marked it all out on a steel beam . http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop041.jpg about a foot was removed each side, all the old suspension brackets were removed and new ones made for a four bar setup . http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop042.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop044.jpg To get the engine (oldsmobile 403ci)sat at the right height i made a cradle that bolted to the exhaust bolt holes in the heads with some adjustable cross members front and back to sit on the main frame. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop017.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop016.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop018.jpg

kin well cool
The chassis started to take shape , but while it was still a basic frame i decided to make a bolt on roll cage. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop027.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop028.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpopfeb06045.jpg The chassis and rollcage without the body gave the car an American dirt track racer look, Would have loved to go on the roads like this :-) http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpopfeb06006.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpopfeb06036.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpopfeb06012.jpg

kool
To try and keep the 403ci engine cool at all times i got hold of a Massey Ferguson tractor rad which just fitted under the hood when closed. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop099.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop100.jpg Where the original headers came into one, it was in the same place as the new chassi main rails. so both sides had to be modified to bring the collectors on the outside of the chassi http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop167.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop181.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/pop01-06010.jpg

Ouch , can not believe its over 3 years since i last posted on here . ive got alot of catching up to do so ill start updating with a few new photos .For two years the project was in the corner of a steel fabrication workshop where i used to work , this gave me the use of a 5 tonne overhead crane which was very usefull for lifting the body on and off http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/hotrodpop/projectpop208.jpg

you know it makes sense Mike !!
If you can hang on a week or so I now have a spare set sitting at Valley Gas - haven't actually clapped eyes on them yet but yours if they're any good.
Hi and thanks for the comments , Yes Mike C i did band the rear wings . I welded a 4" band to the wing and welded the band straight to the body shell leaving 2" sticking inside the body to weld the wheel tubs to.
