So when fitting new gaskets do you fit them dry or smear a thin layer of sealant of your choice on the heads and cover first ?
I'm just fitting new gaskets to a Rover V8 and was going to use a little blue hylamar to seat the gasket in place, before fitting the cover.
Good idea or bad idea ?
Cheers Andy
I normally do that, then lightly nip them down in place, then tomorrow when it's set off, tighten them down fully, works a treat for me if you got the time :)

I'm using the thicker rubber re-usable gaskets but am having trouble getting them to seal properly even though I have used a gasket sealer as well.
I'm using T-bolts and spreaders and am finding that I can give the bolts a quarter turn after the engine has warmed but they wont budge when the engine is cold.
I'm not sure if the bolts have loosened or there is still a lot of potential compression in the gaskets. If it's the latter then I guess the gaskets will eventually be compressed as much as they can be and the oil seepage will stop.
Maybe I'll just go back to the cork gaskets.
