...I was 5 years old and my Dad was working on the night shift at Jaguar's Browns Lane plant in Coventry. He came home one morning at 6 o'clock as usual, I was sitting at the top of the stairs waiting to hear his key in the lock. Same routine every day: early morning tea and toast on our own while my Mum and brother were still asleep. This morning was a bit different though. There was a magazine sitting on the kitchen table with the most amazing car on the front: it was Al's Gasser (back when it still really was a gasser) along with a guy in a bear outfit carrying a very nearly naked woman!
That was the start of a long time passion for hotrods, streetrods, drag cars, customs, kustoms, naked women, yanks and VWs (yeah, I said it: VWs!)
I sold my nailhead powered slingshot last year (it/I didn't fit!) and bought a monster '64 Pontiac Grand Prix from the head of special effects at Warner Brothers in Hollywood. It feels like cheating but I'm really enjoying owning car that starts, stops and drives when I want it to, rather than being the proud owner of a pile of parts and a vague plan do do something with them.
Actually, I'm also the proud owner of a big pile of parts!
I think the next project will be a teardrop trailer to tow behind the Pontiac - hopefully I can encourage my anti-camping chick to come to few more shows!
