Evenin gents & gentesses
Continuing on from my last thread on my ,mistery missfire , I changed out the tin valley gasket this eve for a shiny new composite item , along with new thermo spacer & carb gaskets. to rule out any air leaks on inlet side.also gave carb blow through
took her for a spin & no change. still running like a bag of nails.
that rules that out , which leaves me with 2 assumptions,
1 could it be fuel pump ?? have pacet silvertop in at moment & from memory there ticking slows down ounce the carb is filled , but mines buzzing allong at full tilt- is that right or is my memory a little off track?

2 could it be the dizzy/ amplifier module ?? both will cost around same to replace but am now pritty much bang out of pennies so If I do one prob wont be able to afford the other.
any thoughts guys ?

Cheers
Tony

do you have a fuel pressure regulater in line ? carbs only need 2/3psi silvertop could be up to 8/9 psi so fuel will push past the needle valve causing poor runing.

Have you got a fuel regulator on there? pressure for a Holley is 5 psi? not sure as it's ages since i ran one :) i got a silver top and it does slow down after pressurising the line :( how wet/dirty are the plugs?
(must type faster :D)

no regulator in line as I was lead to believe that the silver top only put out about 5psi
the plugs are sooty , so def running ritch , I gess ill try getting a regulator & pump from work 2morrow.
thnx fr the input

Once the plugs are fouled they won't run right.

My Holley seemed to run rich, I could drive for an hour or so and then start getting a misfire. Sometimes I'd drive to Shakey or Wheels Day and the car would run fine all the way - but after being parked up for some hours it would seriously misfire when re-started. Seemed like the fouled plugs would get worse after cooling down / drying out?

I've done what I can to lean it out a bit, made sure float level is correct (I set mine slightly on the low side of 'correct').

I have also gone to hotter plugs, now running NGK BP5ES.

I think I read somewhere that for modern EFI cars they don't bother putting a gloss glaze on the ceramic part of the plug nose. That's no problem for computer-controlled cars that never get the mixture wrong - but with a rich Holley a fouled plug is permanently U/S.

No reg needed with a Facet Tony as they only put out 5 psi which will be fine with a Holley as they like 5-7 psi, I would look at the plugs, also have you checked the float needles as they have a habit of dribbling and sticking.

Tony, I don't know if this comment would be valid, not knowing the engines history but as it seems you're at the hair pulling stage, here goes.......
I've known higher mileage Rovers running stock cams to wipe off cam lobes starting usually at the back of the engine. This manifests itself by carb backfires and misfiring. Lobe wear has been serious enough to detect it by measuring lift at the rocker and doing a comparison with rockers at the front of the engine, inlet or exhaust as appropriate. Obviously inlet or exhaust wear would give slightly different symptoms.
A certain Range Rover had new distributer, intake manifold and various valley gaskets fitted before we bottomed the fault.
Keep on at it.
Mark.

will let you know the results.

Evenin guys, Just a short post to thank everyone for there support again , & am glad to say Im fireing on all 8 again. :)
It appears after all the agro to have been a culmination of a plug breaking down - intermittaant fualt which I only noticed having checked & re`checked plugs then fitted new set.& a ? wheeping float valve. & now with addition of a ported 2" carb spacer slightly smoother running ..

now thats done I can get on with sorting abs on my daily..

Tony for what they cost its worth changing the needle valves, get the Viton tipped one's as they are better.

Glad you got it sorted.
