View Full Version : Jag IRS Hand Brake

Hi,

I'm struggling to get my hand brake lever / cable fitted to my Pop with XK IRS as Jags intended.

The lever and cable work, but I haven't got anywhere to mount the lever (not much space in a Pop) and the only space has a silencer there.

I wondered if anyone had made levers / linkages, or if anyone knows anyone who makes them to allow the hand brake lever to be placed in the centre of the motor, as most OEM with a single cable going to the Jag levers, pulling from the front, as opposed to pulling the levers from the o/s ??

Hope this makes some sense, bit of a job to explain

I thought maybe Cobra kits may work with linkages, but can't find any info yet,

Any info appreciated,

Cheers,
Mike C.

Hi Mike my car runs a jag rear and my handbrake is in the center between the seats. I shortened the cable, the outer stayed the same and the inner I shortened at the caliper end by soldering on a new n i p p l e (had to say it that way or else the swear filter would have got it).
It works fine. just passed its mot.:D

Hi Nigel,

Cheers for the info. On mine maybe I should have said, easy to forget these things my g/box sits high and the cable would have to be in an "S" shape with a sharp ish bend by the lever as I'm not far off a back seat driver. It did work in mock up, but it looks like a c:Dck up swear filter missed that one also :)

Nice to hear you got mot, btw how many clicks does yours come up on the lever ?? to get a good hand brake pressure.

Cheers,
Mike C.

I went for a centre pull on mine, very similar to that used on mountain bikes, had the cable made up locally with an adjuster on one end, clevis on the other, solid rod between handbrake mech and wire :)

Hi John,

Yes that's the sort of idea I have in my head, was thinking some kit cars may have a linkage they use to save me a bit of time,

If not I'll come up with something similar,

Cheers,
Mike C.

Steve,

possibly with a bit of fabbing, but I just paid a large wedge for this Gennie kit, as I thought I had more room above my silencer :o so I'm trying to make this work, as I don't really want some more expensive wall art,

Cheers,
Mike C.

Wouldn't be difficult to mount the Lokar lever on the Genie, Its only 1 bracket to make.

Steve,
Poss wires crossed. I have a Lokar shifter, and I have a Gennie hand brake kit that is for floor mounting.

Cheers,

Thats a little more difficult, I have Lokar levers here if you get stuck, It would of been easy if you had kept it all 1 make :(

Steve,

Welcome to my world :D:D thanks for the info I'll bear it in mind, I'm up for nearly two big ones for this, and yes it would work, so I can't return it as it's ok I just got it wrong, unless Miles is an exceptionally good old boy ????? ;)

hi mike am doing the same as you at the moment got a s type hand brake of ebay and going to a stype rear hope to be able to use a jag cable .do you know what lenght is a standard one is as i am hoping it will go in as i will be mounting the leaver so it will be at the front of the fire wall, looking at the other posts the jfs one seems to be the eaest one to do might have to go that way if mine dont work

In this situation bell cranks are your friends. Simples...

hi ross been thinking on those lines aswell since my last post

My cable on my van pulls from one side, my seats are in the rear. lol

from diff to hadbrake lever must be 12" max

The cable just goes in a circle round the diff (sets of rear and does a loop in between the chassis rails then back to the handbrake)

no new cables and works a treat

I used a standard Jag one on my Y. I cut it to length and had a yacht chandlers crimp on a new ferrule ( handbrake lever end ). Apparently it was easier than matching the nipple!

John how does that centre pull work on that setup ???
Just like on a push bike, the middle is pulled forward to the handbrake, the 2 long arms act as the levers, passed every MOT so far :)

i wondered like steve, cuz it looks like it will just pull the ends of the levers towards the front, but they look like they need to be pulled sideways:confused:

Laws of physics: pull the centre of that cable and the ends will pull inwards.

If it got too long or sloppy it would not be very efficient, but if it is short and tight it'll work okay.

Had the same problem re space and we went for a pop " umbrella " handbrake on the column.

Hi Allan,

Iv'e got a standard brand new cable, so may have one for sale ?? I could measure it tonight, but it is quite long.

I'm also thinking along the lines of John's as I don't really want to spend any more uneccessary cash.

But as totus / Brian has said maybe coil it around the chassis ??

Mike C.

Thanks for the info Brian, I'll have another look at mine, however I have a cable that I can cut to fit as it's aftermarket, so I wouldn't need to coil any uneccessary cable.

Good to know how some make it work though,

Paul,

Another good idea, I had also missed that possibility. I'll have another look tonight.

Hi Ross,

Didn't think of bell cranks, trying to get my head around how they would work best at the moment, I'm at work so can't think too much :D will have another look later,
