does any one know if there is a 5 speed gearbox that will fit on to a v8 ford flathead?

Theres a thread about this somewhere Tony, do a search

Our A came with no engine but it was a flathead and the box in it was a T5. Clarky bought it off me then sold it. I'm sure the new owner would post pics of the parts needed if it's not already in a car.

I put a Ford transit type 9 behind my 8BA which was pretty easy

It's more difficult with the earlier flatties as they have half the bellhousing cast into the block

I would've thought a Type 9 would be a nice box for a flattie.

I'm not so sure Geoff, flatties are quite torquey :pop:

That was my main concern when I decided to go this way

I figured a diesel transit would be pretty torquey as well and they seemed to stand up to plenty of abuse

I haven't put any miles on this yet so I suppose time will tell!

Gearing wrong or box not tough enough?

My educated guess would be yes Steve but if the flatty was a treaked jobbie a MT75 might be a better choice.

The T5 from an s10 seems to be the most popular using an offy or speedway adaptor. There is a company in Australia called 'flat attack' that make adaptors that enable Toyota 5 speeds to be used.

Your right Gavin but to me its a pointless exercise as the S10 box has a very low 1st gear that you end up never using so therefore you end up with a 4 speed :(
The Toyota box would be a much wiser choice in my opinion or the MT75 which is good for 300bhp

I tried a MT75 first but the bellhousing integral with the box was no where near fitting the flattie

The usability of the first gear of an S10 T5 box depends on the rearend ratio used.
I run a 4.1 rearend ratio with an S10 box, which leaves first gear virtually unusable.
But, if I swapped in a 3.5 or higher rearend gear, the T5 first gear comes back into play, no problem :).
T5s, S10 or otherwise, are one of the best things anyone can fit to the r`s of a flattie, stock or otherwise...

Steve B's truck bellhousing is cast iron I think, but 8BA-type car bellhousings were pressed steel, without the rear mounts, so very easy to modify for a suitable trans, I would have thought. And I just happen to know where one is :)

I have for sale a ford top loader four-speed with a sbf bell housing,is that any good ?

I fitted a Volvo 740 4 speed and overdrive in the truck very easy conversion by machining the Volvo bellhousing down to 30mm and re drilling the flat head bellhousing to the new bolt pattern. I have just done the same for my Sedan. No reason theat the 5 speed volvo box would not be the same mod. gear stick remote is easily cut down to whichever position you need.

Yes Brian but the S10 still has a low first gear, Its because its a truck, I'm sure a T5 from a mustang would be much better as you then have a useable first gear.

Mustang T5 1st gear ratio`s are 2.95- 3.35- 3.97- and 4.03. Which, in comparison, makes my 3.07 1st look pretty usable with a taller rearend ratio when fitted.
I researched all this 10 years ago (as you do :)) with Gary Mussman at Cornhusker before I obtained and fitted my T5.

Also, Mustang (and Camaro/Firebird) T5 transmissions have the shifter placed to far back for use in a pre `34 rod (it drops the shifter right where the seat needs to be).
If it`s for your truck Tony, these measurements may help decide where your shifter will be placed ......

tony, I have been supplying an adapter to mate the flathead (59a or french type) up to a volvo 4 or 5 speed. The French have been doing this for years and it works good, otherwise I have the offy and speedway chevy adapter kits here.

Which Volvo box are we all talking about?

I'm still not convinced i'm afraid, the flatty has a good torque band so i think the Toyota box would be a far superior box to use.

You can also swap the tail housing and top cover from an S10 onto the other variants of T5 (mustang etc) to gain the better shifter placement.

It's got a lower first gear than Brian's S10. 3.29 ish if I remember correctly.

Almost Paul, 3.28 ;). Some Supra boxes ranged from 2.14 up to 3.82, (which brings up something we`re all forgetting here) ..... most transmissions, T5s, Toyota`s etc, etc, came in a variety of overall gear ratio`s depending on their intended application, which means whichever trans you favor, there`s bound to be one with ratio`s that suits your needs and power plant.
Just do your homework before buying.

Tony, if Steve fancies a T5 trans in his F2, the measurements I gave in my previous post will give an idea of where the shifter will end up in the cab.
Likewise, if he fancies a Toyota (Supra) box, these came with 4 different shifter locations, as measured from the front face of the transmission these are : 18", 20", 21", 21.5" ...
