never really liked the 35/36 fords done like that however ive now found myself with nearly everything i need to build one very similar to that, 5 window though
What sort of guys originally built these early customs,was it mainly a Southern California thing? Like the early Mexican Lowrider culture?
Obviously cars like this were too nice to race about in, legally or otherwise.Probably too expensive for kids as well,all that labour building them.
Yes, they certainly look striking when sitting still, however I still prefer old Fords a bit more HotRoddy, if you get my drift.

I think more than a few early customs were raced as well as cruised - the Pierson Brothers had this beautiful '36 as well as their more famous '34 coupe, and it was raced:

Remember, these cars were only around 10-15 years old in the late '40s / early '50s and being "pre-war" were fairly cheap to get hold of, so affordable to many. To get that high a standard might have required the use of a custom body shop, but lots were worked on over time, as and when the owners could afford the work.
That '40 Merc is just about perfect, by the way.

nah, 35/36 3w proportions are wrong(i know its a 5w built into a 3w but proportions, for me, are still wrong...) theyre too long at the rear behind the window. the '40 is lovely though
My only pet hate are those rear wheel covers, i like to see the wheel and tyre.

what makes you think that was a 5 window? going by the distance from the b post to the rear arch i reckon its always been a 3 window

That trunk to turret gap is longer than a 5W. There is obviously a lot of bodywork gone into it & I guess trying to 'correct' the 3w proportions was a part of it.
I just don't get it though.... I think the idea - besides driving slowly (!) is to make the car look swoopy but they remove the tail light stands, that visually lengthen the car and ditch the deep headlight buckets that do the same.
Dont get me started on moulded in headlights and LaSalle grilles.

Hot Rod magazine did a 36 roadster back in the 70s.....it's been a desire since then

The world would be a far better place if we all drove flatheads. No more electronics to worry about, no more Audi tailgaters, no more people moaning because they hit a bump in the road and their little sidewall popped, no more LED fairy lights shining in your rear window...

At least the last one left the tail light stands on - very period incorrect I expect. They're pretty & very well done - the 3W door is an icon, like a deuce frame or an early A cowl. But down in the rear and up in the front? Must have been off school the day they tought that.

keep up at the back ;) the build was in rodders journal, no. 27, and on cole fosters web site when it was built, cole foster built the car for kirk hammett back in 2006/2007. here it is near the start of the build

But I throw the org. chassis with the old flatty-combo out and get a fresh 36 chassis with ifs / air-ride, 4wdb, ps,pb, 6.2L/LS3 E-Rod & 6speed Auto trans, high-speed radial 6.00/6.50 tires ... in !

Keep the Flathead,
just get rid of all the other unnecessary clutter, like glass, seats, wings,running boards, fit a Desert spec Ford truck rad, add bigger bumpers front and rear, and ...you've got a gorgeous Nostalgia Stockcar!

Flathead are nice, I like to see them, hear them, but I dont want them under my hood.
Keep it stock or do it hot rodding hot.
I travel a lot and the new LS engines are very powerful and very good at gas. A flathead will do it not for me ( right now, but you never know)
Guys from my car club bought brand new french flathead engines from a german military depot next town to me, when they closed their camp a wile ago. In case if I change my mind . . .
Aniway, 1936 Ford Coupes are nice . . .
