Hi
I currently have a 390 Holley on my Rover v8 SD1 that really could do with an overhaul or replacement.
The carb, as far as I know has been on there since 1990 so its due for some attention.
Is the Edelbrock 500 too big for the Rover? The Rover as far as I know is pretty much standard apart from inlet/exhaust manifolds and carb
All information much appreciated.
Regards
Paul

Edelbrock 500cfm is perfect and will be a very good choice in deed.:thumbs_up_smiley:

The Edelbrock as standard needs recalibrating with a calibration kit for a rover

And at 390 cfm the Holley is just slightly bigger cubic feet per minute than a stock Rover needs.
I had a 390 on a rover in my Pop in the 80's and i was outperformed by a Rovered Pop running a converted RV8 manifold to run a twin choke webber of a 3Litre Capri !!!
Idealy the 3litre carb should be jetted to suit too.
I have spoke to 2 or 3 people who rated the big twin choke webber on RV8 over the years.

But it don't flow enough air in the high rev range Ian.

No i dont think so Steve, stock Rovers dont rev very high and peak out before their red line too ,the twin choked RV8 Pop ran a high 15 sec 1/4 ,mine was a best of 16.25 ,so that engine certainly wasn't short on flow for its rev range.
And thats why i would go for the big 3litre twin choke webber for a stock RV8 .

500 edelbrock with a re-calibration kit. like steve says.
is the way i would go. all new and out of the box readly available easy to work and tune. fuel tight and will give good performance all day long.
Fuel economy included to an extent of your right foot. "redline" fun...:thumbsup2::lol:

Ask your self a few questions.
Will you be making any further improvements to you engine?
Do i need a new carb?
Whats wrong with the old holley 390 that a rebuild kit wouldnt sort out.
have fun paul.

I used a calibration kit to tune the 500 edelbrock on Sue's 29A, she now see's a fairly decent 30mpg if she keeps it under 70mph (however thats highly unlikely )

Hey boys, lots of info there.
I would really like to renew the carb as the body and interior is pretty tidy but the engine needs a makeover and you can see the carb very clearly.
Are the calibration kits readily available Steve?

Hi Pete
Sounds like Edelbrock is the way forward. Do you know what jets you put in yours?

Steve, rang and left a message this afternoon. Perhaps you can give me a call when you are free tomorrow. I need to know whether you have a carb on the shelf too and how much money for the carb and the kit

Thanks Steve for the call, the Savior has done it again!!
I love shiny new bits!!!
Pete, if you can find out what Kev used, that could narrow down the trial and error time.

Is the re-calibration kit used just the get better MPG on a 3.5 RV8 or does it improve performance as well ?
Fitted a Eddy 500 straight from the box on my 1981 SD1 3.5 which has Offy manifold, fast road cam , ported heads, MGBV8 headers. Seems to run OK in the Moggy and would prefer performance gain over better MPG.

The calibration kits allow you to change anything in your carb so yes
