View Full Version : Cologne 2.8 V6 ignition.
We have a Cologne V6 that will not start & I'm looking for anyone who knows anything about the ignition circuit on these engines. We get an intermitant spark at all cylinders but when you turn the ignition key off the engine will fire once - using fuel built up during the cranking I presume - but where the spark is being generated heaven knows!
Were all the ignition coils fitted to these engines 8V? Is there a way of checking that the ignition module is functioning? Is there an alternative ignition available?
Any help appreciated, this is costing me my sanity!
Cheers,
Andy House.
Hi Andy.
The ignition on these is usually pretty reliable.
Has it run properly before?
Some Cologne V6s had a points dizzy but they are super rare now. Poprodder on here had this trouble a while back.
I believe Accuspark do a conversion too, but first I'd check the rotor "fingers" aren't bent/corroded. Double check your wiring too.
This is how the wiring goes on a banger, but guess it applies for a road car the same.
From your switch (12v) goes to the two pin block connector. these two wires are black, and a third wire joins into them to the coil +.
The other side of this block is a red and a white, both go straight to the ign box.
My coil has no voltage markings on it, but it might be worth buying a new one regardless. I got mine from Speedy spares in Portslade, but most factors should list something for a 2.8 Capri.
A substitute box would be handy too but they are rare now. try ebay/ovalchat?
One last thing, are you on the original Pierburg carb? they can be troublesome.
Webers are better .
Hope this helps, and good luck!
Jim.
