****************************** NOW SOLD ************************************************** ******************
*********************** UPDATED PRICE NOW £625 OR OFFERS ************************************************** *************
Ok so after that underwhelming response and the fact that it really must go quickly as I will have nowhere to put it, I have reduced the price by 50% ......... better than a boxing day sale eh........ but am still open to offers below that.
Also will consider keeping some parts if your plans do not require them to reduce the price further. I really am open to any suggestions as the reality is the car will have to go to the scrap yard.
Oh and it now seems that the registration number could possibly be worth over £1K..................if you can get the car MOT'd of course:)
Over to you then.
************************************************** *****************************************
I bought my Austin just over 20 years ago and took it off the road within months as it was nowhere as good as it looked on the outside. The work done was covered in the first 5 -10 years with no progress since due to another project but despite this I never ever planned to sell it always believing I would one day get it done but find myself having to do just that due to ill health and now to make matters worse I am also losing my rented garage shortly. So I guess that ticks the genuine reason for sale box and the quick sale required box as well :)
So to the car itself it is a 1958 model (only made in 1957 & 58), 4 speed manual with the floor change option. It has a heater, carpet etc. (but no radio or clock) so I believe that makes it a deluxe. It is black with a red (leather) interior.
The registration is I believe original and is a 6 digit plate.
In short, structure wise the floor and chassis/ outriggers only needed minor repairs but the drivers side front floor may need a repair.
All 4 inner wings were shocking and have been repaired.
Inner sills were repaired with nos outer sills fitted.
The engine bay side of the inner wings (they are double skinned) need welding along with the radiator cross member. The worse bits are the flanges for the 4 wings - I had planned to weld not bolt the wings back on as that what had already been done in part. Some of the welding needs tidying up on the inside of the car also.
The bonnet and boot are ok but all 4 doors and the front wings need work. The rear wings however are very good with one being a used replacement but I still have the original too (and these are hard to get these days as unlike the front wings and doors are not interchangeable with the A50 and commercial models)
Ironically the paint is pretty good and the windscreen is not full of holes just my tax disc holder collection
The front and rear suspension have been blasted / painted and have been fully rebuilt at a cost of over £1k (not counting my labour) including all new/nos parts wherever possible and all new fastners etc.
The front suspension has been lowered 2" with custom made shorter / 30% uprated coil springs and modified mini bumpstops.
The rear suspension has 25% uprated lever arm shocks (using commercial bodies), the leaf springs were retempered, ends chamfered and poly lined (by Brost Forge), a 3.9 diff (getting rare now - converted and overhauled by a local gearbox company). 2" longer u bolts were made by a local engineering firm and 2" lowering blocks made.
The front passenger side spring hanger mount needs welding and the bump stops modifying.
Also have a spare 3.9 diff in pieces but the case hardening has eroded on the pinion shaft so would be noisey without attention to this.
N.B. The rear suspension is not assembled and with just the minimum currently fitted so the car is rolling.
The brakes have been removed except for the master cylinder and hard lines but need a complete rebuild (the drums and backplates have been blasted and painted as part of the suspension work).
The engine (1489cc B series) is original and ran ok when I bought it although leaked oil quite a bit but has not turned in 20 years so is probably seized and needs a rebuild or replacing -- an MG 1800 3 bearing is a straight swap but getting rare now, the later version a bit more involved to fit or of course anything can be made to fit ;) Interestingly there were 2 marine 1489 engines for sale local to me not long back which may still be available.
The gearbox I imagine will also need a rebuild as there was a synchro problem on 2nd gear when I bought it . Also have a spare gearbox (condition unknown).
The wiring is there but needs replacing in my opinion.
The interior has been removed and is ok and should clean up I would think but won't be perfect.
The only parts missing are the carpet, headliner material (not the framework), fuel tank, spare wheel, battery and exhaust system.
I also have a rare steel external sunvisor that I bought some years ago which I can offer at an extra cost if required.
So basically quite a bit of work done but obviously still needs a lot of work.It would make a great Kustom (in my opinion and what I had planned to do) as with the a bit of imagination it looks to me very much like a shoebox Ford ............. but I do have a great imagination so ...........................
So to the asking price.................well I have over £2.5K in it without my labour and I want it to go to a good home with someone who will get it back on the road, something of course I have failed to do during my ownership. I consider it far too good to break but of course once sold I will have no control over it's fate but with certain parts being desirable/ valuable I would be foolish to sell it for less than they would fetch as parts only.
That said it has to go and soon due to me losing my garage so priced to sell as the saying goes .....................£1250............... but I am open to offers so try me, you just never know :D
No part exchanges obviously due to the above mentioned circumstances, well at least not cars, bodies, chassis, engines etc.
Located in South West Wales, last exit (48) of the M4.
I have tried to think of everything but of course any questions just ask here or PM me (also if you want to talk we can swap telephone numbers).
I also have more photos for anyone who is interested which I can e:mail.
