View Full Version : Drop tube axles

Just trying to sort out a drop tube axle for my new project (another T) and there seem to be different options so I wondered if anyone could offer their opinions.
Looks like the ones available from the States can have either Ford or Mustang spindles, are there any advantages to either?
Is there any problems with a 6" drop over a 4", apart from the obvious of being too low?
I wanted one with welded on radius rod and spring brackets, some have brackets for friction shocks as well which look quite tidy but do these shocks work?
Are there any companies in the UK that make these axles?
Thanks in advance Pete

I think the Ford spindles would have more brake option choices for drum or disc, etc...

My experience with friction shocks on a performance car is that if you've managed to get them adjusted to work on a dry day (unlikely) they'll be cr*p on a wet day when the friction discs get wet and have no friction, or the discs expand and the dampers lock up solid -sometimes both things happen within a few minutes - not on both sides of the car at the same time of course -what fun -not!
A set of lever arm hydraulics will work much better IMO even if they don't look so retro when you don't want to use telescopics.

Brizey, flex in a tube ? I thought it was always beams that flexed and the problem with tubes ia that they DON'T flex meaning the method of location is very important to the cars handling. I can see a problem being possible with extra leverage being placed on the locating method , sort of how you use a cranked jack handle on a scissor jack?
