View Full Version : Removing Halfshafts Jag MK2 axle
Any suggestions to removing Half shaft Jag Mk 2 Axle, need to replace bearing. Have been using slide hammer does not shift it.
They have a tapered hub with a keyway,
when i owned a solid Jag rear i struggled for hrs trying to get the hub off to no avail,
you'll need a h/duty 3 legged puller bolted to the wheel studs and pressing onto the centre of the shaft,
whilst under pressure you need to apply oxy/acetylene to the hub and get it real hot,
it'll then suddenly crack loose,
when you refit the hub to the shaft apply plenty of copperslip to the taper and it should come off easy in future with a few hammer thumps.
Ive got the hub off I need to get the half shaft out to replace the bearing

Are they not located by the housing with the 4 bolts in that also serves as the caliper bracket?
all thats off its just the shaft and bearing still in place.

Slide hammer it is then.....mine were absolutely solid in there. One side must have had water ingress at some point and the bearing was rusted into the housing.
Immerse the end in some old oil or soak the crap out of it.....go back to it another day.
I've been using a product called ' Shock and Unlock' lately with good results . It's a freeing oil but suspended in propane ( ice cold )which will usually break a rust bond .
Thanks i'll give it a go.
Not sure it would be a good idea using copperslip on the taper - certainly on early Ford axles all that would happen is the key would shear under load. The hub would be easy to remove for replacement though :)
the bearing is fitted to the shaft, taper facing outwards, the cup is fitted facing into the axle facing inwards. slide hammer , to break the cups hold. keep track of the shims on the retaining plate they set the bearing preload.
