Fuel additive

Is it necessary to use a petrol additive for a standard 350 V8 chevy engine (1982) when only doing about 500 miles a year? If it is then can anyone recommend a brand please. I did put one of those strings of lead in the tank a few years back which could still be there.

save the money you'd spend on additive and put it by for when you burn a valve/seat. mind you the valves/seats will probably outlive you at the mileages you're doing.
