As some of you will already be aware the DfT have a new survey on the go. This one is asking for your opinion on ‘possible’ new legislation. There are many ideas in the survey but one key one rings out and that is a law to prevent ‘tampering’ with vehicles systems. Now it’s believed this legislation is to pave the way for future Autonomous vehicles as these will all need to work together to provide a safe environment, and if tampered with is will create un-known variables, read dangerous.

So far so good these are distant ideas and autonomous cars are in early development stages so what does legislation aimed at them matter to us? Well LOTS. See this legislation like so many that come out of the DfT has a very wide reach. If introduced this would make it illegal to tamper with ANYTHING. That’s right, they don’t limit this to any new autonomous car it will cover any vehicle out there and not just road use it even covers ones used off road. Not sure how F1 will see a future in which tampering with the car systems is an illegal act.

So what we need you all to do is this. Log on to the following. https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ETVHG5/

Run through the survey and answer the questions with your thoughts. Answer as an individual contributor and take your time. It IS a long survey but please don’t be put off. Even if you don’t answer everything answer as many as you can or feel able. Surveys like these need a number of entries to be registered or the DfT considers the general public to be uninterested and plough on with what they see fit regardless. So we need NUMBERS to have their say.

One thing you will see is that each page has a number of proposals but only ONE vote. If any of the proposals on that page is something you disagree with say what you think and point at that sentence, just because you may agree with quote “Improving compliance, safety and security” you may not agree with again quote “Tackle tampering”.

Contact your friends and get them to look in and submit an opinion too. we do suggest you answer with some discretion and avoid colourful language as that will most likely have the DfT disregard your opinion. Get to it folks.
