Buying from Stateside

Can anyone give me an idea of the cost to ship a car from the States to the UK?
I'm not looking at specifics as yet, just a 'ball park' figure would do please.
Also, what is the cost of getting it registered here and is there much agro doing it.
The car I've seen is around the mid-sixties and all original.
(Never thought about it before 'til now but seen something I really like!!
Please keep it simple for now!!

I've not done it for some years and I understand costs have gone a bit stupid. Shared container. I dont think I'd entertain roro. I'd imagine it would be £2500 or more now, based on what I paid but could very well be wrong. Plus a few hundred in handling fees, and 5% duty. Historic registration is free. Best if you get the US title as proof of age.

Biggest unknown is getting it to the port as this is obviously dependent on distance, so where is the car? Can the seller help? 20 years ago I paid $150 'hook charge' plus a buck a mile each way. $1000 all in, all within NewYork state, so only a few hundred miles.

Feels a bit like buying a house. Just let everyone dip into your pocket and hopefully there'll be something left in the end!

Ask around for slots in a container, Russ Pepper, Steve Trott and others as I'd expect this has to be possibly as economical as is possible.

Lots of rusty, bodged up cars in the US.

Thanks for that. A great help. Car has been independently checked over and is almost as new. Same owner for last 25yrs and original owner before that. I guess if I allow around 5k, it should be in the zone?

Just an afterthought....Is there any tax of any kind to pay doing it this way?

If it's 'historic' then just the 5% duty should apply. Registration is £55. Look through the Gasser and Custom Car as there are a number of advertisers in there who can give you a more accurate figure, and also advise of the legal requirements, if you want marine insurance, etc.

I'd like to think that by budgeting £5k you shouldn't have any nasty surprises, the opposite in fact, but I'm not going to put my neck out quite that far!

Yeah, the three I've done were all under £2K, although haven't had anything since before Covid.

There will also be a difference depending on where it leaves the US - California is obviously a lot further than anywhere on the east coast and from there the boat goes through the Panama canal.


PS If it is not 'historic' and you have to pay VAT and duty, I think pickups (commercials) have a higher rate of duty as well.

I’ve just imported a car from Toronto, Canada and it’s the same sort of costs as the East coast of the US, all up it was around £3k which included collection from the seller and delivery to the docks in Toronto, insurances, shipping costs, taxes etc but I arranged my own transport from the docks in the U.K.
i used Kingstown Shipping and it was a very good, hassle free service

Thanks for that. It was a '66 Ford Thunderbird Landau. It sold last night for $19,995
and from the write up, was in excellent condition with only 2 owners from new.
I missed it due to being involved in something else! :(
It was in New York State too.
