Would be cheaper in the long run and a bit more bang for your buck, although nothing is cheap now .. I'm a fan of the Flathead , run one in my coupe and have a couple of good spare indeed I have all the parts your buddy is looking for but not sure if Im parting with them just yet . or if I would get what they owe me . Sods law would dictate as soon as I sell one the motor in the coupe will expire and I wont be able to afford a replacement .. !! Also got a winters QC in the shed, still got the labels on it , open drive as I was getting fed up pulling the 40 rear axle to replace stripped couplers . Still haven't decided what route to take with that ..

rough guide as to prices these days , for a running flathead, nothing special your probably looking at ?3000 for some thing half decent , ?1000 will get you a boat anchor. 39 boxes , are ?1000 all day long and will still jump out of second on the over run. A quick change , depends on if you want vintage or new .. A winters with brakes and brackets will be around ?5k with the appropriate slightly narrower spring of model A style setting you back ?500. A decent flathead inlet lets say a Thickston for the more fashion conscious is ?1000 without carbs and ?350 per carb plus linkages and re jetting , its a pricey way to go slow but they look great and sound even better .. A rebuild on a flathead to any decent spec will set you back in excess of ?10k, and some parts are getting hard to find as far as I believe .. I run a Volvo 4 speed M40 from an amazon, converted to closed drive ( not by me) its a decent box that fills the gaps in the gearing the 39 box will display .. however I find the Volvo doesn't like to shift quick. the synchros dont really like the torque it your pushing it , OK if you DDC and rev match the shifts. Saying that Ive run this one for 6 years but its never had to much stick ..

Ive got a pair of 32 rails , tube x member , a built flathead , dual inlet and carbs, 39 box, or a NEW T5 box a new winters QC with brakes and brackets and ladder bars but I would need serious money to even consider parting as its getting harder to find and less and less affordable your looking at the thick end of ?20k or more for that lot :( scares me when I add it up , but not so much when its accumulated over a number of years .. but still ...

Daft money , I used to buy them for ?50 for runners and remember going to Wales with a buddy to collect some French Flatheads before they got hijacked by the Yanks , bought 3 off the fella for ?300 each , new not reconditioned. He must have had at least 300 stacked at the side of his shed in sealed steel crates . I sold mine to a fella in Norway a few years later when the prices had gone bonkers and the nostalgia thing had taken off big time .. pretty much paid for my first coupe build :) Those were the days LOL . I also remember not being able to give away a used running 24 stud engine at the southern swap meet , so instead of dragging it all the away home , I dumped it by the side of a skip on site .. lol.. now you can barely find a decent one that can be rebuilt for a grand . Wasnt that long ago you could pay close to that for a good 4 inch stroke crank!!!!

happy days got myself a 21 pilot motor for rebuild so just need an intake and ancileries,I think ill go the t5 gearbox,so many thanks for the replies cheers Fred
