well, our anglia is nearly on the road, you may remember my lengthy rebuild thread :)

Its brakes are rubbish though (stock)

It has its origional shoes:D:eek:

Wheres the best place to get some new ones, are they NOS or are they new made with modern materials?

Ive found some for 330 per axle, for that money, is it worth considering the swap to hydraulic/disc?

Is there any way to fit hydraulic brakes on stock spindles/rear axle? Dont mind the PCD change.

Thanks

Hi, don't panic about the price of brake shoes as you can get new ones from Pop Parts Plus for £28.00 an axle. Below is their website address

There the ones ive found, ment to type £30 not 330 :)

Are they modern friction materials or NOS?

There not that cheap are they, but then again its a 60 year old car, i should just be gratefull there even available!

If you think that a modern day equivalent of a popular car would cost you approx £ 25+ for an axle in some instances, its relatively cheap for obsolete parts. I think the items that they are selling are new old stock (although I may be wrong).

Well, more used to paying about £10 an axle, but VW parts are cheap :)

Im not too fussed about the price really, more the quality. The shoes in it are perfect, and i cleaned them up along with the drums, but it still doesnt really stop!

Dont know if the brake material can go off over time, there not oil contaminated, dont really want to spend £60 if it makes no difference.

Thats why i was hoping they were modern materials. Mine look like some kind of woven material with copper rivets.

i once had a stock pop that had the brakes completely over hauled and they worked brilliant. they stopped just like you would expect from a newish car.

Ive been told stock brakes are pretty good.

Everything works perfect, ive cleaned/greased/checked everything, all works well. I can only think the shoes are to blame.

I havent checked the cables, but i have checked the shoes expand when you press the stop pedal.

I was only asking Klunk where you'd got to a little while back.

Fitting discs to Pop spindles is relatively easy, look up Marts website, he used Ford brakes and a bit of bearing juggling from memory, so I would suspect that Anglia/Cortina drums might be a possibility too. I'm pretty sure that Triumph (Herald/Vitesse) discs can be used, again with bearing swaps. As for the rear end, can't say I've ever heard of it being done but that's not to say it hasn't or can't. Generally speaking, the reason anyone would want to uprate the front brakes would be after swapping in a later motor, which would mean the torque tube would likely be gone too. Very early Lotus (6?) certainly had Pop brakes converted to hydraulic, on the front at least, using what may have been Morris wheel cylinders. I've seen one done that way at the Shelsley Walsh hillclimb, just never thought to look and see if the rears had been juiced too.

I have considered juicing the stock brakes. Ive also considered trying to bodge on VW brakes as the stud patterns are so similar.

Ill check over all the cables and try to run them in some more and see if they improve, if not then its only the shoe's that can be at fault!

Oh yeah, should the pedal feel very solid? Once it starts to brake, you press harder and it slows a little more but the pedal doesnt really move any more. I figured thats probably cos its cable but i dont know, not had early fords before.

Pedal moves a short distance freely and then should go good and solid if it's adjusted correctly. Push harder = more braking! If you're staying cables and they aren't new I strongly recommend standing on the pedal a few times with a Geoff Capes leg, ie try and break a cable because you don't want one going on the road.

is that from experiance jonny?

I have to use all my leg strength (i clime about 100 flights of stairs a day!) to make it stop from 15mph! I dont think the cables will snap. Just wondered if maybe somethings seized a bit. All the spreaders work when you press the brake pedal but maybe somethings binding at a certain point. Ive not really looked at the cables much.

The shoes were a bit glazed but i cleaned them back, drums are good.

Hand book says you should be able to lock all 4 wheels at 25mhp, this has no chance of doing that :)

hi 49 anglia, mine felt a little vague when i drove it first, but when it went in for test i thought its was going to have the brakes tested on the road with the meter in the footwell, but it was tested on the rollers,as i wanted to make sure they were balanced o.k, all 4 brakes locked out the rollers, the tester was well impressed with how efficient they were, i think initially, we are so used to servo assisted we forget the presure we need to apply, especially on the rod type brakes, i think they just need getting used to, although i havent tried to lock all four up at 25 mph on the road though .

Well, ill see what happens at the MOT then give them a try before i start throwing money at the problem.

Thanks.
