View Full Version : Wing piping....
Erm, I dont wanna come across as looking a bit stupid, but is there a right or a wrong way to fit the rear wing piping on my pop? I was gonna silicon the piping flange to the body then fit the wings to it but I'm not totally convinced this is the best way. They are 4 inch over size glass wings and are held on with around 12 self tapping bolts a side (over cautious maybe??). I wanna nice as fit as possible as 'fussy' is my middle name!! Cheers, Lee
I've seen them "notched" to clear the bolts and firmly pushed down as the bolt is tightened up, john

Don,t use silicone!
Cut notches in the webbing as JSF says, to go over where the bolts are. Take your time and get it right or have some spare.....
You,ll need at least 3 arms here as you want to pull the bolts up tight and push the piping into place at the same time. Have you fitted the wings up before? If not, you might be in for a bit of a shock as they don,t always fit like it says on the can. I,ve had to cut them into pieces and re-glass them to get them to fit right but you might get lucky. You may need some spacer washers here and there so get some oversize repair stylee ones to spread the load a bit and don,t worry too much when you here the cracking and crunching noises, that,s just the glass "settling" Gulp....
So, bolt the wings on very loosely, cut your piping to go over the bolts, drop it in the gap and start tightening....

as above!!! cut slots in the piping 'tail' (the flat bit!) to go around the fixings... push it in as you tighten the fixings. if you get piping with a wide enought tail, you can pull it thru from the underside as the fixings are tightened, depends how much overlap there is on the wings
hope that helps! if you need to see what i mean, give me a shout and i'll bring the Y round!
Can't remember where I saw it, but I remember seeing a post where a very skilled craftsman used a needle and thread to sew little loops into the tail, so the piping could be pulled into place from under the wing while tightening the bolts, It makes a tighter fit than pushing in from above. Useful in some tricky situations.

needle, thread, sew?!! thats womens work!!!
Cheers ladies. Sounds like it aint gonna be too difficult. I can rely on a few pairs of hands to get the job sorted and at most all it'll cost is a cup of tea and a slice of cake! I'll give it go. Worse ways all I'm gonna do is bu66er up the piping if it goes a bit 'Pete Tong' lol. Upside is the wings have such a minimal gap I can almost get away without the piping, not that I'm gonna try! The rear wings were fitted way back and sat on the car for around 3 months, every now and then just nipping the bolts a bit more to close the gaps. Worked out well I think. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on, Lee
