Thanks Tim.
Well today was a more frustrating day.
It's moving on but all the jobs took a lot longer due to typical garage issues;
Dropping the allen key down the back of the engine and it did not hit the floor - still not found it yet.
Dropping the hard to reach bolts many, many times before finally getting them bolted in.
Unbolting the hard to reach bolts as you find out a pipe/cable/something is routed behind the part that needs to go in front of it.
Plugging in the gearbox loom only to find a cable has pulled out of its plug (wire had broken). Yes its the plug buried in the back of the engine bay here; nice and easy to reach with the crimping tool - not!!
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...745d599266.jpg
Strangely enough this part was actually easy to repair, makes a change!!
One VERY good thing to come from this is removing the air filter showed I had forgotten to refit the oil pressure guage connector when I rebuilt the sender fittings - that would have made a royal mess when I fired it up, even if I spotted it fast when I had no oil pressure on the guage it still would have pumped out plenty - so maybe a blessing in disguise.
Column is back in with the modified indicator canceller which now works perfectly. I'm held up in putting the column shroud back on as I need the pins for the new connector and I also need a new timer relay for the intermittant wipers as my current Porsche one has died and is very rare now. Thanks to the guys on another I have sourced a far more common VW one so when that arrives it can be fitted - I've bought two so I have a spare in the future.
Heater is fitted and a quick test shows reasonable air flow out of the foot vents and passable pressure out of the screen vents. It's not up to modern car standards but it's a massive improvement over the previous heater.
Lucky I have solid engine mounts https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...miley/wink.png 4mm clearance between the rocker cover and the heater housing.
The hoses are just mocked up here with the old modified heater control, this needs repainting and a clamp made for the hoses to hold them tight to the chassis rail.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...06218af9eb.jpg
The engine hoses are mocked up here - I'm waiting on the Aeroquip fittings so can't go any further till they arrive - no new years day cruising for me https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...smiley/sad.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...01f05204ae.jpg
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...891da171ae.jpg
Once i've got these fitted I can work out the best place for the screenwash bottle and the oil recovery canister.
Tomorrow its stripping out the inner wing to pull the wiring back up to the new motor from the front of the car.
Sounds like it's all coming together Mark, good luck finding that Allan Key. [emoji106]

If it was easy everyone would have one
Very true John.
Yesterday I had an unplanned trip to work - I had notifications my deliveries had arrived early so I had to go to the factory to collect. A bonus was the delivery that should have come to my house was also there - result.
That meant I could get all the hoses completed;
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...9196fea097.jpg
Then it was on to trying to extract the wiring out of the fully sealed sheathing. To access that meant removing the inner A post cover plate - which meant taking off the inner wing plates - which meant dropping the top suspension mount off.
Now the inner A post cover could come out......errr......no - exhaust had to come off for that.
Well that escalated quickly https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...smiley/sad.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...57f87aec11.jpg
I got the car up on the hydraulic ramps to do this as it makes it a much nicer height to work at - this also means I could get under the car for some much needed cleaning. Iv'e not done this for over a year and a half due to working on Phil's car - it was pretty dirty but cleaner than expected for that much time.
I cleaned the worst of it off but it will get a proper valet after I've finished the fan install.
I got a lot more done today, all the wiring is finished in the car with a new plug fitted. The Inner A post panel has been modified for the new wiring to exit through and is now refitted.
Exhaust is back on again and all the wiring trunking refitted to the car with new stainless P clips (zinc plated before which were beginning to rust).
Tomorrow the inner wing will be refitted and I'll sort the heater control valve cable, after that I'm just stuck for the pins for the connectors - without those I can't finish anything off properly.
I did not have time to update this yesterday as we were visiting my sister.
So...yesterdays progress was (almost) finishing up the job. The oil recovery canister was relocated to the drivers side of the car, luckily to keep the pipes short I swapped the valve covers over to keep the same pipe routing as when it was fitted to the passenger side. The breather just clears the carb linkage on the passenger side so that was a bit of a result https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...ley/smiley.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...390483909a.jpg
Then the screenwash bottle was moved down next to the radiator on the passenger side, I need to fit another pipe clip to tidy the tube but I've currently run out of them. The heater hoses are now fitted as well but again I am waiting on some nice anodised double pipe holders to hold the black pipes in place (the same type of holder as you can see on the braided hoses).
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...1eb8463793.jpg
With the clamps fitted the two black hoses should stay tight to the top chassis rail.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...aa0d28c883.jpg
Heater valve fitted, and the control cable shortened and rewound to fit the valve (temporary test wiring at top waiting on the correct connector pins - this will dissappear when finished). The valve is currently being repainted.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...6aab6c122f.jpg
Snug - but it all fits.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...f5baaf4f6e.jpg
Aye Mark, snug as you say but looking tidy and working far better now. [emoji106]

Lots more done yesterday but all little jopbs, not photoworthy.
Picked up the pins for the connectors so I can close those up tonight at least.
Intermittant wiper relay is dead so a lot of help form clever people has got me an order of capacitors to fix it......hopefully.......
And it's done https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...ley/smiley.png
All fitted for keeps tonight, engine filled up with anti freeze again and everything tightened up.
I'll run it up to temp tomorrow to check everything is good, then it's a breakfast meet on Sunday if the weather is fine so I can see how toasty it is now it's in.
Fan airflow to both screen & foot vents is pretty decent, so pleased with that - I'm sure the heat will be good as well.
I might have to align those hose clamps, they are annoying me now I look in the photo https://storage.proboards.com/forum/.../browraise.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...12778097aa.jpg
Just the hose separator clamps to fit - these hopefully will arrive before the end of the week.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...cd4a703460.jpg
I made a quick number plate mount, I'll do a better one in a single bit of ally & get it painted and then they can be swapped over.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...63e1b18a78.jpg
Plenty of room for an oil cooler behind the number plate now https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...ley/smiley.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...6af787dd7e.jpg
Job well done Mark. Good luck on Sunday. [emoji106]

Normal service is resumed https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...miley/grin.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...2a9e017354.jpg
As we are a bit quiet at work this week I got my splitter 3D scanned and after over 2 years of waiting it's finally turned into a proper cad drawing (originals were cut by hand).
As such it was easy to program it into the CNC machine at work so I can cut new ones at any time now (they are designed as a sacrificial part).
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...bd35da8627.jpg
Postie dropped off my new oil breather lines so they are now fitted, and also a mixed bag of capacitors for the wiper intermittant relay which is no longer working correctly.
Engine was run up to temperature when I got home and the heater tested - a good strong airflow with the engine running (more power from the alternator) and temps very good, it should be much nicer in cold weather.
Temp of air coming out of the heater vent;
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...48a8832a56.jpg
Should be very cozy in the car now.
Are you running screen vents all the time and the eyeballs for inside heating ?
Yes John.
Eyeballs can be shut off but screen vents are permanent. With eyeball shut screen get the full airflow.
Sorted Mark. [emoji106]

At last, I took the car out for a run to test the heater today (been away skiing recently).
Off to the Bagshot breakfast meet and after taking the column inner shaft out yesterday to move it round 2 splines so the indicator canceller is in the perfect place I finally have perfect cancelling indicators 100% of the time - excellent.
Heater seems to work well - not up to modern car standards but I could feel my legs were nice & warm all the time. The engine did not get up to full temperature as the outside temps were cool (180-185 degrees - normally is 190-195 degrees) but it certainly made the car a much more pleasant place to be.
No issues with engine smells entering the cabin while driving - some smell entered with the car stopped though, so the inlet extension for the fan air supply will get built to remedy this.
All in all the modifications have worked out really well.
Next job is fitting an oil cooler.
Heated seat next Mark and your done :thumbs_up_smiley:
Glad it's all worked out okay Mark.

A little job I've been meaning to do for a long time is the screenwash pump. The one I have is ok, but the fluid drains back (even though I've fitted one way valves) and when the pump is dry it cannot draw the screenwash up any more. This can be quite annoying when you need to clean the screen!
A while back I spied another rod with a modern push in pump fitted to a bottle. So with a bit of research I found a Honda Jazz pump has a single outlet and is supplied with the sealing grommet and also has std spade connector fittings rather than a specialist ford/BMW etc plug that requires a correct connector to fit.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...24a08d0204.jpg
The original pump is buried behing the bulkhead panel inside the dashboard.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...44102e6f7e.jpg
Trial hole in the old red bottle at 20mm leaked a bit, so an 18mm hole in the new blue bottle was gently filed to 19mm for a good tight leak free fit.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...4d091fa642.jpg
And after a bit of faffing around with new hoses and wiring it's all now in its new home. Instant strong jets of water at the touch of a switch, so that's a good win. Hose and wires not fixed back yet in this photo.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...6ac9a34c74.jpg
you couldn't find a little NOS sticker for the blue bottle then? lol.
neil.
Mark, keep meaning to ask, what do you waterproof the door cards with? PVA?

Tim,
On mine I just sprayed them with whatever paint I had left in the gun every time I painted something. Eventually built up a good cover.
On Phils I will use a water based sealant that we use on the cases at work - amazing stuff.
Otherwise you can just varnish the untrimmed side with a few coats for protection.
Thanks Mark, out of interest what's the name of the sealant please?

Not posted much recently as I've been away for an epic 3 and a bit weeks tour of California https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...ley/smiley.png (I managed to visit quite a few rod shops on the way as well)
Anyway, back home now and first thing was to get straight back out the next morning with jet lag for the Bagshot breakfast meet. I got a really cool photo from a pro photographer who was there;
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...e6141dd233.jpg
So, gettin dishy with it....Buy a stainless dog water dish and cut a big hole in it and drill some more holes around the edge, then dress a bump in the edge to clearance it.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...8a11819495.jpg
Then make a gasket up to suit the fuel filler mount,
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...7e3a1a0d6c.jpg
And fitted to the car - no more spills onto the tank paintwork.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...414d266dc0.jpg
I will be making a new tank this winter, it's currently a bit under 8 gallons, but I've designed a new one which will boost it to almost 12 gallons which will get the range up to a better amount.
that's a sexy bit of dishinosity mark !
Nice piece of ingenuity there Mark, excellent bit of re-use mate.

Well 5 months has gone by and nothing much to report.......until today :)
At thr NSRA swapmeet recently I bought some 8mm thick felt underlay as a base for the new carpets that I've not thought about fitting for the past 7 years, lol. See, I can prevaricate just like like the best!
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...f6deff7631.jpg
The carpets that are in it are black and I thought good quality - but they soon proved not really to be what I wanted, though they have lasted well - just melted a bit over the exhausts under my feet.
The new carpet will be a quality Wilton - currently getting samples, but likely to go for a dark grey for the floors and a very light grey for the gearbox tunnel, boot floor and between the rear tubs - (if I bother to cover the tunnel).
Now there will be 16mm of carpet & underlay I'll need something to cover the edge up by the doors, so some 19 x 19 x 1.5mm aluminium angle was trimmed down to 16mm tall and shrunk a bit to fit the curve of the car.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...78c4e8e5e3.jpg
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...d0b16aa1ff.jpg
The floor is bolted in along the edge to the sill, so the ally angle is drilled to fit using those bolts. Passenger side one fitted here - needs fine sanding & polishing on the mop for a chrome like finish now.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...cfbbc2d6f0.jpg
As an added bonus Phils car is coming back this weekend for some interior trim work, so more updates on his thread soon.
With carpet that thick Mark if you're not careful you'll end up with a crick in your neck mate. [emoji1787]
Looking forward to seeing the outcome.
Cheers Tim W

As a while back I bought new carpet for it, had toI've make the effort to go into the garage to have a go at fitting it.
With the passenger seat out the black carpet can be got at. It's not fared too badly to be fair.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...10ca54527d.jpg
With the carpet stripped out the floor is exposed - still looking pretty perfect considering I painted it nearly 20 years ago.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...f55fed0129.jpg
the 8mm underfelt is cut to size;
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...90bab52333.jpg
and the new dark grey carpet is trimmed to fit. I'll probably get it edged at some point (might even do it myself) It's only resting in place at the moment, it will be fixed down later.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...2b0f124305.jpg
And a little sneak preview of the light grey carpet that the rear floor, boot floor and possibly the tunnel will be covered in. Not sure about the tunnel - I really like the painted ally look and I've only got one chip (as you can see in the photo) in the last 8 years so carpet is not essential.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...364244601d.jpg
Looks well Mark and as you say it's weathered the test of time very well indeed.
Cheers Tim W

Not been on for a few days as been busy in the garage and also my 2 cats are poorly/injured so a bit stessed about them.
Carrying on the re-carpeting of mine, paper templates were made of the floor;
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...23502348ec.jpg
and transferred to the carpet with a chinagraph pencil.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...3f452fa52f.jpg
I missed taking photos while doing this, but the same was done for the wheel arches, template being made here for the rear floor.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...531000b367.jpg
And the carpet cut to size and fitted.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...ec500cf0aa.jpg
I had some (2 bits) left over fur flex from around the doors, and luckily they were EXACTLY the right length for both wheel tubs - how often does that happen??? So they got glued to the carpet edges and it finishes off the fold over the tubs nicely.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...7328c2d341.jpg
Carpets in with the old heel plate, Ill try to make a nicer one that is a bit bigger next.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...bd9d75c3bf.jpg
And all done. I'm not so happy with the middle bit - I really preferred the bare painted aluminium, but this should be a little quieter and it's behind the seats so not really on show. I think I'll leave the tunnel in it's painted glory.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...0aa046a3a2.jpg
Looks really good Mark and that wheel tub is spot on (and how lucky was that on the fur-flex). I wish I'd seen your rear quarter panel's before I'd done mine I'd have finished them closer to the door seal. [emoji106]

All looking good Mark.
Good work, Mark.
Just think of all the bits of grass and mud thats gonna find its way off your boots onto that carpet....especially when camping.
mark, you know the auto emerge steps that you get for 4x4's for when you open the doors? you need them with boot scrapers for your car, lol.

Never been a problem so far with the old carpets :) this car gets used, it's not a show queen ;)
A bit of progress on my car for a change!
I bought an oil cooler a few weeks back but I've only just had time to make a start on fitting it. These are the MkII brackets (MkI just visible in background) I got these made at work https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...miley/wink.png
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...3b76bdccc5.jpg
For the front support I bought some 6mm rod ends and fitted them into a bit of 8mm OD tube.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...39c2e3bd5d.jpg
The tube has the nuts welded in and ground circular, fitting kit completed here apart from the 'T' bracket that will need to be welded at work on Monday.
I'll get them powder coated next week. Not visible, there are 2 rubber bobbins on the bottom mount.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...92eaebcf41.jpg
Trail fitted in the car - hoses will need to be ordered as soon as I get time to go over to Think Automotive.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...e486b42029.jpg
I forgot to take photos of the repairs, but I'm not finished yet so I'll add some now.
With the paint scuffed back lightly I painted in some black paint. it's been flatted off here with 400 grit wet n dry as this is the third bit of touching in on this chip.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...77c1593211.jpg
I will need to spray one part as I've broken through to the primer here.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...168c44c6c6.jpg
These were the really deep chips from the brick or whatever it was that hit it. They are mostly filled in here, hopefully the last touch in.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...7741921da9.jpg
The dull area is where some of the other chips have been flatted back with 2500 wet n dry ready for polishing.

Almost there, last bit blown in tonight.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...35a9c13edd.jpg
Almost done, all new paint flatted back to 2500 grit, (I've run out of 3000)
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...523fdbe6ff.jpg
One little dip still left to fill
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...5ddeb4c4c0.jpg
Blown in section flatted off as well.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...e3f219505f.jpg
I started polishing some of this area which was going really well......right up to the point where it cut through to the primer again https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...iley/angry.png not the same place, a bit further along. This is an area of a previous repair and the paint is not as thick as the rest of the front.
Ho hum, just have to paint it again.
Even with the front off, you call that easy access. You must bendy arms. :)
Rear plugs are a little tight, but I did build most of it to be easy to work on.

I smoked the indicators while they were off as well.
Me & my friend Andy went to the Bagshot Breakfast meet today, I was hoping Andy Carter might have his Pop there as it's just back on the road again, and thought it would be good to get photos of his & mine together.
When we arrived he was there and there were empty parking spaces next to him, result!
Twins! Think mine looks better though
Well there would be a lot more photos but as the forum only allows a max of 8 photos per post, and it thinks the photo above is 8 photos you will all have to miss out
Think it thought 8 of the same back view was more than enough!
I wondered what happened to Andy’s pop, it seemed to appeard then vanish, I think everyone was hoping he would return to racing and was doing some modifications!
Andy refuses to race ever again - partly a political decision.
As such his first version of it was too much and he hated driving it, it's now de-tuned and aimed (a bit) more for road use, and he is far happier driving it.
He's concentrating more on his son getting into drag racing now - who also has a Pop :)
Yeah I’ve seen his son in the pop Ruby a few times.
plenty of pictures are posted mate don’t stress it lol
Well it's been a while since I posted - car has mostly been in hibernation since last post though I did take it out to a local meet on Boxing day;
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...19f3e6f21a.jpg
Today I finally bit the bullet and attacked the roof with the DA - jeez I had laid some paint on that - even with 40 grit on the DA it took ages to break through to the filler. The reason for this is a couple of cracks were in the paint for years but I ignored them, but this summer a new one appeared along the gutter line so this forced me to have to do something about it.
https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/blac...231e568d0a.jpg
I was expecting cracks in the filler under the paint, but it was not as bad as I expected, a couple of hairline ones that I ground out, but it seems the cracks were mainly in the paint. 10 years of abuse and quite a few wheelstands on the strip (and street https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...miley/grin.png ) have taken their toll.

First coats of epoxy primer on to see if the filler is the right shape - probably not so far but I'll see tomorrow.

primer got blocked back today and the first coat of gloss has been laid on. It's not masked properly as this is just to see if it all looks straight, there is one tiny flat spot I need to address that I can see.

Small flat spot now filled,

And 2 coats of paint applied, now unmasked for a good wash before I flat the roof paint properly for the last 2 coats to be properly blended with fade out thinners. Paint looks a bit rough as I had the air pressure too low (20psi - trying to avoid overspray).

Back to roof paint. I had painted it last week and left it to harden off, after a bit of sanding it needed one more coat to fill in a few dimples from me not having the air pressure high enough on the previous coats.
This was done yesterday so time to flat it off properly.

Some time later and it now looks like this.

Mostly happy with it, a couple of areas need another bit of wet sanding to remove sanding marks but it's nearly there.
New project arrived at Blackpop Towers, in for final fettling and fitting a few bits that are not right.
