Tonight I spent most of the evening searching many boxes for bits, lol!
Found some of them, so the battery cables are now fitted;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/345098536f82471.jpg
And bolted into the roof;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/345098536ee3511.jpg
Also brush painted the wiper motor and some little parts for the roof bows.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450985370552e1.jpg
Fitted a few other little items not worth photographing.
I was going to fit the wiper motors but I need new nuts and also the washers to fit under them to avoid scratching the paint when they are done up. Anyone know where they are sold?
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/345098546d6b4a3.jpg
Nice progress mark, try svc ?
http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/category/wipe...ems-and-parts/
Seen this over quite a few years now, it's good it's finally going to be finished, look forward to seeing it all done Mark.
your going to need more than a magazine feature, will need to be put in a book with what you and the pop has been through mark.
on the road 2013?
That look s sweet as mate, keep the posts coming :)
Thanks everyone, been a long build eh Steve?
Hope 2013 will see it finished.
I'm using the rubbers as shown all inside the bodywork, the only part you will see on the outside is the nut with the shaft flush with it.
I need new nuts (oo-err!) as these are not shiny enough and some stainless washers to protect the paint from the nuts.
Did you not read my PM ?
Hi John, yes I did, but i don't need the rubbers or their covers.
Its the fibre washers and stainless shim washers I need.
mini spares do brand new nuts for £1 - though looking at mine properly they are actually good ones.
I spent 2 hours searching both houses and the loft again tonight, finally I found the right box for the battery tray, so that is now fitted;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/34509af06ce4d6d.jpg
And on the other side is the fuse board fixing panel;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/34509af07a5a44e.jpg
Also got the fuel filter, screen washer pump, electric door shut connectors and the coil fitted.
Wipers are now fitted, made my own stainless washers from some penny washers and punched them out on the fly press so just need to order the felt ones to finish.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a02a366bbce.jpg
Motor fitted in top of the cage;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a02a37321ad.jpg
Also been polishing the front chassis rails, so sore fingers now! Front struts temporarily fitted while I search the loft for the next bits!
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a02a3855cf5.jpg
I've been watching this build progress nicely for a while with interest, very
impressed with the paint.
Well done Mark.:yes:
Dave. :)
each bit on is a bit nearer to the finish ,looking very nice looking forward to seeing finished keep the photos coming
Thanks guys
That paint is mental shiny deep and lush I would hate to have to bolt stuff to it my hands are shaking just thinking about it:whistle:
Ha-ha, touch up brush to the rescue!
Already chipped it (chassis) and will chip it plenty more yet no doubt. Touch up with an artist brush usually does not show much, though I'll be very careful on the actual bodywork.
She does look fine Mark, it's gonna look that good mate no one will notice any chip touch ups. Keep it coming.
Cheers. Tim W.
looking good Mark dont scratch it putting the bits back on thats my nightmare :eek: great progress there is light at the end of the tunnel now:)
be lucky Adie
Still polishing :whistle: got all of the rear inside of the car done now, just got to finish off the cage and then more bits can go back on.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a6cf4e87114.jpg
All that hard work is paying off now Mark. I'm very impressed with the finish you have achieved. Keep it up mate, its nearly there.
hurray!! I've finished polishing the inside!! :yes:
I can start polishing all the other bits now :no:
Anyway, as a reward to myself I bolted some more bits on, fuel pipes go in;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a7fa6bb6f6b.jpg
Rearview mirror is fitted, no looking back now! :lol:
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a7fa6c8150d.jpg
Today was another good day in the garage
Got the roof bows fitted (no photos – forgot)
Spent a lot of time going round the car tapping out all the threads to remove the paint – cordless drills are very useful for this!
Then fitted the fuel pump, but lost the pinch bolt for the bracket – I expect it will turn up at some point, probably hiding with the handbrake which has also gone missing :whistle:
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a975dac388e.jpg
Got the brakes fitted;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a975d8b9315.jpg
Also fitted the cable outlets to the rear valence for the lights & tow hook plug, trunking will be longer and shrink wrapped into the teardrops etc for total waterproofing.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a975d9a01cd.jpg
And flatted & polished the dashboard. Then fitted it and thought, f**k me, that looks the dogs bo**ocks! Very happy with it :D
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450a975d7a0162.jpg
More soon.
Looks great. I like the black and white contrast, although it doesn't look like there'll be much white left on show when it's all together?
Hi Rem,
Its actually grey, but you are right, none will be on visible when its finished. Mad? ....me?? ....possibly :D
At least you will know it is all protected. You won't have to worry about what's happening behind the panels!
She's coming on really well mark. Keep the photos coming.
Cheers. Tim W.
Did this tonight; :)
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ad663630315.jpg
Turned out ok, I knew those tube benders would be useful one day!
Just need a couple of these connectors (middle of pic) to join it together again;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ad663720316.jpg
Anyone wanna buy these? :)
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ad663acca4d.jpg
Also fitted my spreader/towing mount bar. Towing eye threads into where the silver bolt is and exits through the flip front cranking handle hole.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ad6639ccac2.jpg
Also fitted most of the brakes, loosely at present as I chipped the paint :whistle: which needs touching in now.
The nacelle is also fitted.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ad66380d48d.jpg
Nacelle from under the car.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ad6638db67c.jpg
Fuel pipes all now re-done :) good for 1000bhp now :incheek:
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b0071fed798.jpg
Handbrake fitted, it will look a lot better when the leather gaiter is stitched around it.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b00720a3f75.jpg
Calipers rebuilt with stainless pistons, got a bit of a problem with them though as the dust seals will not stay on the caliper body. I even scraped the paint back off to see if that was the problem, but they still pop off.
Even with the steel retaining rings fitted they want to slide off.
I think I'll need to glue them on, would threadlock do the job? or would something like Evo stick be better?
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b007216e210.jpg
Looking very posh Mark. :yes:
Dave.[:D]
Strange that mark as most stay on by themselves ? try tigerseal on well cleaned parts
looking good mark i was going to say sikaflex but JSF beat me to it hope to be doing what you are soon keep the updates coming
Cheers fellas, seals on properly now, I used a small brush to paint on some high strength green goo for thread locking, it's brilliant stuff.
Seems to have done the trick ok and will be easy to remove later on if required.
Got the front suspension back on today, some paint removal was required, not all on purpose :no: Touch up brush to the rescue ;)
Keen eyes will see I also painted the bolt heads and nuts after they were tightened.
Was hoping to get the hubs, brakes and wheels back on tomorrow, but subsequent inspection of the wheel bearings put paid to that. They mostly are ok, but I think new ones would be safer. I know they are Capri 2.8i but no idea what year. Maybe local motor factors will have some tomorrow?
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b1464e551fd.jpg
Hi Mark I'm pretty sure all years had the same bearings.
Cheers Marcel, looking at the bearings today (now I've removed them lol!) I'm fairly certain they are actually new, I think I renewed them when I got the brakes. They have new seals, and all are packed in new clean grease, the marks I saw yesterday on the races are probably just witness marks where they have been stored for years.
Hmmm......I remember this AFTER I have removed them from the hubs :mad:
As I was a bit stuck with the wheel bearings I decided to get on with some other bits. Flatted & polished the inner A post panel, and fitted it to the car, fitted being a slightly flexible word as it doesn't. Panels are silver but look white in the photos.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b283f580af6.jpg
Not sure how this has happened as it fitted properly when I built it, I can only think I trimmed the body back a bit when I did all the body prep work. Hmmm....some careful trimming will be needed to avoid damaging the paint, luckily the inner panels are aluminium so not too difficult to do. I'll have to repaint the edges carefully by brush.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b283f8c45a1.jpg
Rear section of the ally roof panel is now fitted, you can also see the roof bows fitted too.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b283f75b7e0.jpg
I also flatted & polished the boot top panel, its now fitted with the boot lights and centre switch as well as the boot strap mounts.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b283f8103ba.jpg
I fitted one wheel back on as I had only stripped the bearings from one hub, only temporarily fitted for the mojo boost :) Wheels need buffing, again!!
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b283f698568.jpg
Its fairly coming on keep up the good work it looks cool as f**k:cool:
Thanks mate!
Tonight was 1 step forward 2 steps back :(
Trial fitted the rack, which for some reason did not fit straight any more? (paint thickness??) a little file work on the bolt holes sorted that though.
Then realised I don't know how to set up the front suspension again. It was all done on Wayne's jig, but unless I wrote it down somewhere I don't know what to set the wishbone lengths to so it's all in the correct place again........bugger.
Rack fitted;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b3f55fbcbf6.jpg
The other bit I don't know the settings for is the ends of the rack. I cannot remember if we set the ends properly or if they are just done up.
Can anyone let me know what the settings are for tightening the end sections onto the track rod arm ball sockets?
Also they need repinning, how do I do this?
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b3f56b82dee.jpg
Looking good Mark, comming along nicely!:yes:
Took a bit of googling but 4-6 lbs pull on it, thats at the very end, or quite stiff if you havent got a spring balance, those cheapy baggage weigher's are handy,, you can check your NOS bottle weight too :D
http://www.aa1car.com/library/steeri...er_sockets.htm
Cheers John, got a baggage weigher too :)
Been told another couple of ways too, so should have it sorted soon.
While I'm waiting on spares for the rack the new wheel bearings arrived, so its now on 2 wheels! I did find the dimensions of the suspension arms, so the front end is now set up reasonably accurately until it can be set properly.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b945dd50f8e.jpg
As I'm quite disorganised and the engine is not ready to go in I've been putting together some of the odd items in various boxes to reduce the stack in the loft :)
Firewall gets trial fit;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b945de4e6f6.jpg
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b945dfd88e0.jpg
And roof dash starts to get reassembled;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b945df0ce1b.jpg
Boot hinges now fitted too;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450b945e08cc04.jpg
I need to pull my finger out & get my new halfshafts, then the rear axle can be reassembled and the back half of the car can go together.
that looks really good, cant wait till im at that stage with mine, it gives me hope seeing yours..[:D]
as each bit goes on that more space in the loft and a bit nearer the finish ,looking good and will be nice when its on all 4 wheels ,
Started reinstalling the rear axle case today, went mostly smoothly until I found the gussets on the rear shock mount on the passenger side fouled the shock mount brackets :mad:
Some quick dressing with the angle grinder soon fixed it, but I don't know how I missed it when I built it??? I'll need to repaint that bit now.
A quick shot with the tyre roughly in position (needs to go under body but axle stands in the way).
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450bbd505417c8.jpg
As my friend Wayne still has one of my shocks I can only fit one for now, so the mock up bar is still on one side.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450bbd5063067c.jpg
Side view of the 4 bars.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450bbd50723a49.jpg
Mark is it the pics or are your rear coilovers pi$$ed in both planes :confused:
Steve,
It does look like it in the pics doesen't it?
Its the photos though. Shox lean forward looking from side on but are upright from the rear.
Axle might not be centred in the photos as the panhard is not fitted yet which might exaggerate things. Steel bar (fake shock) is not straight in the mount though.
Looking good Mark - Keep it coming.
Cheers. Tim W.
Wow, looks fantastic Mark.
How long do you just stand and look at it before turning off the lights at the end of the day!?:D
All the best with the build.
Nick
Mark, it may be as simple as switching your lower shock bracket to the outside of the axle one.
Nick,
So I'm not the only one who does that? [:I]
Ross,
Shox are straight, just the camera angle.
comeing along in leaps and bounds,i bet we all will have some touching up to do even new cars have get that keep the photos coming is looking good
Cheers Allen, touched it in tonight as well as painting the diff casing.
Also rebuilt the other side of the rack as the spares arrived from Frank Carrol in the post today, thanks Frank!
Decided to go for new half shafts from Langy's rod shop as I just did not trust the ones I've got.
Lookin good Mark :)
Diff got second coat of gloss tonight,
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450be5b4d62957.jpg
And panhard rod get loosely fitted - needs diff in to fit properly.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450be5b4e6efc2.jpg
I drilled and pinned the rack tonight after visiting Wayne's to collect my rear shock and he also gave me some 4 mm rod to pin the rack with. It's all packed with grease & buttoned up now, so another job off the list.
Got both shocks fitted now, and would have fitted the diff but I found I've got no Hylomar left :mad:
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450bfddb428ac4.jpg
Been faffing around for the past few days with a few problems which I'll come back to in future post and also Christmas shopping and work on the house.
I did get back into the garage today though, and the wheelie bars are now pre assembled ready for fitting later (I'll trip over them if I fit them now).
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450c5040726101.jpg
I stripped down my old knackered 9" diff as I need to put the centre section back in to keep the axles straight while I wait for the new shafts and it's bloody heavy! I though I'd remove the worn ring & pinion to lighten it up a bit. This was fun as I learnt how these diff's go together in the process and If I sell the old one it will be lighter to ship it. Anyone want a 9" centre section? - available in January.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450c504082bc6b.jpg
It's got to the point where I really need to fit the engine back in, so that meant pulling the covers off and seeing how it had coped for the last 15 years since it's initial rebuild. It looked a bit sorry for itself so the first job was to strip all the paint back off it.
Then it was disassembly time (again). Not too bad but a lot of red rust in the water jackets and the core plugs were shot.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ce539c1ca18.jpg
Heads off, these were still in perfect condition and will now be fitted with roller rockers.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ce539d49c64.jpg
Inlet manifold after a good soak in thinners, smelly work!
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ce539e747e8.jpg
Timing cover ready for paint
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ce539f93659.jpg
Now I've been told these are forged pistons, is there any way of checking? They are TRW (TRW cast inside the piston) but that's all I know.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ce539acf7ca.jpg
Some new parts to go back in on reassembly.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ce53a11a16d.jpg
It`s certainly coming together there Mark :cool:.
There may be a clue as to your pistons (cast or forged) in your first two pics of the block and head. They, the head and block, are cast items, ergo, most cast items tend to have casting flash somewhere (which you`ve cleaned off the block and head), possibly cast pistons would have casting flash internaly, to a greater or lesser degree. You also say the name TRW is CAST into the piston!
It`s possible cast pistons would also have an orange peel type surface internaly where it`s not machined!...
Forged pop ups. Depending upon head you are looking at a pretty high CR there.
Hi Steve,
I've got Camel hump 59 or 62cc heads!! (cant remember which at present).
Thicker head gaskets might be needed then?
It's run happily as it is but never driven.
Brian, rear of piston are very smooth, but not machine cut.
Edit,
Just read 11.4:1 with 58cc heads, is that usable on the street with unleaded? with octane booster?
Hi Mark,
Really outstanding work there mate, looking like a car more with every update, good luck with the rest of the build, looking forward to seeing you both at a show next year,
Cheers,
Mike C.
That's kind of old technology Mark and a bit high. You probably wouldn't set out to buy those now looking at the rest of your engine. I've run them in the past using octane booster though and it was fine.
Good to know Steve, thanks.
Yep, bought all that nearly 20 years ago!! time flies :whistle:
Now I'd go for an LS7 with injection if I did it again.
I cc'd the heads and they are 64cc.
My block needs decking (any recommendations in Heathrow area?) and I need lower comp pistons, or the tops of my pistons machined off.
As I cant build the engine till its sorted, I went back to painting it :)
Heads & inlet manifold get 1st coat
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450d7933059ef9.jpg
Timing cover
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450d79331788fb.jpg
Wing braces get refitted as well.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450d793328371a.jpg
Thanks Steve, I'll try to get over today for the brake parts, talk about it then.
Ah, ok. Have to be another day then.
I mentioned brake problems a while back which I can go into now.
I'd changed the design to through chassis fittings after it's original build but this caused a bit of clearance issues;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ddf6b3d8311.jpg
This was a bit of a problem! After some head scratching Steve Lang of Langy's Rod Shop came to the rescue. He re-machined the through chassis connectors to accept banjo fittings instead, so now there is plenty of room :) Her also supplied the stainless brake fittings & hoses.
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ddf699ef5c6.jpg
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ddf698b7711.jpg
He also kindly lent me his 37 degree flaring tool, so the first stainless brake line is now fitted;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450ddf697db74e.jpg
thats come out well and and the stainless hoses give a nice touch keep the photos coming
Neat fix !
Yep, Steve came up top trumps on that one!
Glad we got you sorted Mark, a bit more done :yes:
Very neat :)
Just found it, read it and love it.:yes:
1st Class .... keep it coming:thanks::D
:thanks:
Finally finished the brake pipes on the car tonight, what a long job! This might have been partly cos I had to make most of them twice :D
'kin ell, stainless brake pipe is tough stuff! not easy to put double flares in them.
Front pipes back to M/C's
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450e0be738e444.jpg
Pipes from M/C's going through rear crossmember;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450e0be76dcc64.jpg
on to rear chassis connector to axle with brake switch (still need to put all the pipe clips into chassis);
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450e0be75c1f75.jpg
Little loop to caliper flexi mount (ignore temp bulkhead fitting - waiting on hoses arriving)
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450e0be7274c69.jpg
Twin reservoir pipes, need to make some aluminium spacers for the clips to fit to still;
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450e0be77d232f.jpg
Leading to the M/C's - all looks quite busy in there now!
http://imagehosting.rodsnsods.co.uk/3450e0be79196ff.jpg
Another job ticked off the list :)
