no i'm going ahead with the rambler mate but unless i fall in love with it (it's not my 'dream' car) it'll be for sale when it's finished. we'll see, lol.

small update, the front and rear screen rubbers arrived today for the nash. the first screen had arrived cracked so a second was ordered foc and fingers crossed will be here before the end of the month.
the anglia is all done and a proper hooligan it is now, lol. it went home last friday and a mk5 cortina i've worked on for must be 20+ years now came in saturday with a very lumpy idle. as he drove through the town the brake pedal also went to the floor but he managed to coax it here ok. so after the normal checks the head had to come off and the valves all got reground and new seals fitted. that now runs sweet. the brakes required a new master cylinder and on checking both rear cylinders were wet behind the dust boots so they were replaced too. he mentioned the last mot advised rusty pipes on the rear axle so new ones were made up before bleeding the system through with all new fluid. that should be gone over the weekend so the nash can come in at last.
neil.
That's good news about the Nash getting some garage space Neil.

not so fast tim, my son in law wants to fit a towbar to his galaxy people carrier next weekend and ashley wants to pull the 350/350 from his zephyr to get the 'box built and a 383 stroker put together. i'm not in a rush these days and anyway i've just made enquiries about a 383 mopar big block and 727 'box so.........

so ashley wants the 383/727 mopar for his zephyr and i've got a mate who wants ashley's 350 chevy for his chevy nova. i have been punting the 2.0 pinto about and if that goes i'll use the holden v8 in the nash. ok..... so you're all up to date for now, lol.

You have this I'll have that, it's like your own swap meet [emoji23][emoji23]

the nash is finally in the garage :thumbsup2:. first job is to get the s/six flattie out with it's o/d manual box, then have a look at the brake master cylinder under the floor to see if either of the wilwood ones i have here will work. then if the brake shoes are good enough to go again it's check the wheel cylinders. this will decide if it gets a disc conversion before the new engine/box is fitted (whichever one that may be). if the brakes can be easily sorted i'll probably run it all as is and just band the 15" steels for now and use it as is. you know me, it could all change yet

Sounds good Neil... I'll wait for the photo and see if it's like you first said. [emoji23][emoji23]

so from what i can find online the wheel cylinders are 1" bore so kits for series landrovers are only about £6-7 for 2 cylinders. i'll get them off to confirm the bore size (and condition) before ordering first of course. the shoes are like new at the rear so that's good. i removed the propshaft and the axle u bolts, then slid the axle back almost 3" to centre the wheels in the arches! with that moved the 10x18 bullit wheels with 295/35 tyres fit a treat with plenty of clearance all round. the front 9x18's with 275/35 tyres need 40mm spacers and they also clear with just the lightest touch of the inner edge of the tyre at full lock each way. i'm happy with that. being tight i looked at spacers on ebay and 40mm ones are £90 a pair! 30mm are £26.50 a pair and slip on 10mm spacers are £7 a pair so guess what i ordered? lol.
i checked all the steering joints too and the only play is a bit on the idler arm pivot bushes, i'll turn some nylon bushes to replace them and that's sorted. the rear axle is 4.11 ratio but with the big 18" tyres and the o/d of the type 9 5 speed box it'll be fine. as long as 70mph isn't much over 3500 rpm i'm happy.
neil.
Sounds like a plan Neil and 50 quid to the good on the spacers - sorted.

ok, so today the o/d gearbox, bellhousing, clutch and flywheel are off out of the way. then the old brake master cylinder so an assessment of possible replacements could be done. in stock are a new 1" bore single circuit gm 'jampot' and a new wilwood 1 1/16" dual circuit that i've used several of in the past. the jampot would be easier to fit but that's lazy and dual circuit is safer so wilwood it is. the old one sat up in a channel like bracket under the floor so this will need cutting about to bolt a conventional 2 bolt flange type cylinder in there. one of the caps on the plastic reservoir will line up with the existing hole in the floor and as there is a crossover above the dam splitter thingy inside i may just fill above that point. again i guess that's lazy so a full access panel won't be hard to make so....
anyway before they come off here's a couple of pics to show the wheels on there, 18x10's with a 295 and 18x9's with a 275! whooda thunk they'd fit such a small car :D.
Wheels look good Neil.

for now i'll be using lowering blocks with a slight wedge built in. they'll be long enough to locate on the spring packs locating bolt. to be fair when it's on it's wheels there's barely any arch in the centre of the spring pack, but i'm on it mate. when it gets air bags it'll also get a triangulated 4 bar with adjustable bars.
neil.
the wilwood dual circuit master cylinder is now mounted under the floor and all the wheel cylinders are honed ready to be built up when the new seals arrive. the front wheel spacers arrived so it's all waiting for those seal kits before reassembly can begin. the lowering blocks will be 60mm (almost 2 1/2" in real money, lol) so we'll see if the chassis needs notching for axle clearance when it's down on it's wheels. the blocks will be welded to the spring perches on the axle and drilled for the locating bolt on the springs. by next week it'll be on it's wheels getting the pinto and type 9 fitted. oh, i picked up the stainless brake flexis last night too. the old ones were all blocked solid but were going to be changed anyway so....
neil.
Wow she's coming on now Neil.
Cheers Tim W
Sent from my G3121 using NSRA mobile app
yes mate, sure is. :D
no sign of any seal kits today, doh! still there's lots to do.
today the lowering blocks were made up. i only had some 60x60x6mm wall box so that had to be split and narrowed to suit the width of the leaf springs on the car, that was a faff. anyway after much mocking up with the wheels fitted the locating holes were marked and drilled to lock the blocks to the springs and the axle to the blocks. next issue was u bolts, with the blocks being 60mm the rally design u bolts were only flush with the bottom of the spring plate with no thread to put the nuts on. i'll have to get longer ones before final assembly but for now they were cut and sleeved. moving on to the next problem, the leaf springs on these cars are mounted closer together at the front eye than at the rear shackles by about 6-8"!! this meant the rear was almost touching the inside of the tyres. so the shackles came off and were 'dog legged' about 3/4" which not only solved that but also helped locating the springs to the axle. where the axle was moved back to the springs are further apart, they pulled out ok but once new spring and shackle bushes are fitted it won't be so easy. with the springs moved in a bit it lined up much better. there's about 1/4" between the tyres and inner arches, it hasn't got drums on yet but a slim spacer may be needed. if i swap to the atlas axle that is 1/4" wider so won't need them, if the nash one is quiet it'll stay. the pics are as it is now with the axle still hanging down so it should sit nice and low on the ground. :thumbs_up_smiley:
neil.
A lot of faff as you say Neil but looking at it it's going to be well worth it. [emoji16]
Cheers Tim W
Sent from my G3121 using NSRA mobile app
thanks tim :thumbs_up_smiley:. i just hope there won't be too much cutting for axle clearance once it's on the ground. i'm guessing the wheels will go up 2-3" in the arches from where they are now so we'll see .
cheers, neil.
It'll be fine Neil [emoji106]
Cheers Tim W

i had a work out on speeds and engine revs last night. at 70mph in 5th gear it'll be turning a little over 3000 rpm, cushty :thumbs_up_smiley: a 2.0 cortina (4 speed) is over 3500rpm at 70mph and they respond well to a 5 speed box so it'll be fine. the pinto won't get there but it would have a theoretical top speed at 6000rpm of 138mph!. it'll be a nice cruiser for sure and the 4.11 axle gears should also mean it's fine off the mark too.
neil.
the rear wheel cylinders are 13/16" bore and any seal kits are silly money so i ordered a 7/8" kit and reamed and honed them to suit :thumbs_up_smiley:. there was a handbrake 'bar/link' bit between the shoes missing one side so the one from the other side was copied and now the rear brakes are reassembled waiting for new hardlines across the axle. still waiting for front seal kits that should have been here by last friday
neil.
Sounds like a good result on the rear brakes Neil, she's gonna be a tidy ride mate. [emoji106]

didn't get anything done today as i had to go and do a speed awareness course, doh!

sure is mate.
a bit more got done today, the front wheel cylinders are rebuilt and fitted along with the brakes and stainless flexis. the 40mm (total) spacers are on as are the front wheels. with the car sat on the ground to check clearance at the back it's surprising how far back the already tight fitting wheels move in the arches. this meant they're touching the arches at the back. so last job before dinner was start removing the new lowering blocks to drill a second locating hole an inch further back, so the axle will be only about 2" back from stock now. it's all trial and error and once everything's finalised the blocks will be welded to the spring perches on the axle so there's one less thing to move about. it will need a panhard rod too as the tyre to inner arch clearance is very tight so any side to side movement will have them rubbing.
neil.
Looking forward to seeing a side photo Neil
Cheers Tim W

the blocks were both drilled an inch forward today and back on it's wheels the position in the arch is now spot on :D. i've spoken to andy from rally design this evening and ordered the parts to build the panhard bar which he'll drop off after work tomorrow. there's still about 2" of suspension travel which will increase 1"-1.5" once the bump stops are pruned mercilessly, lol. it looks daft being up at the front but until the engine and box are fitted/mocked up we daren't cut the front coils.
oh, the speedo/rev counter and gauges arrived this afternoon too. i'll use the volt meter as a fuel gauge like i've done in the past, a charge light is all i need. i also bought a kenwood stereo off of mark (blackpop) for the nash today too, kenwood is my preferred brand for stereo stuff so just right.
neil.
bu66er! just looked at the pics and noticed i got the gauge set with the oil temp' gauge not the volt meter. ****3r, ****3r, call me ****3r! so...... i just ordered another set but the right ones, ggrrrrrrr! they were cheaper too

today the engine is out, woohoo! also the gear shift rods too. next while the bay's empty was make bushes for the idler arm to get rid of the slop. once removed it became clear the bushes weren't the issue but the nut (and locknut?) hadn't been tightened so the inner steel tube bit of the bonded rubber bush was wobbling on the spindle. now tightened, locknutted and refitted there's no more play. that'd also be why it didn't self centre on the steering as the bonded rubber wasn't pulling back to it's static position. 2 birds with one stone as they say :thumbs_up_smiley:. andy text me this evening to say he'd forgotten to get my bits out to bring home, doh! i also asked him for 2 drum brake residual pressure valves, needed as the master cylinder is under the floor and even at stock ride height is lower than the wheel cylinders. we're off to (hopefully) sunny gt yarmouth monday so no updates for a week :(. at least there'll be more goodies arriving while we're away. things like the 'right' set of gauges, lol.
neil.

the second new set of gauges arrived to day . got a good start on brake pipes with all except the ones that'll have residual valves inline. andy will drop them off in the week so they're here when we return from our hol's. once the brakes are done and bled it's swaperoo time again as the mk2 zephyr that's been in my other garage since last weekend will be over here for some welding and recomissioning. it has a 351 cleveland fitted along with a narrowed jag irs and disc brake struts. these bits and bobs help with my toys so need fitting in.
neil.
Nice one Neil, aye it all needs funding. Have a good holiday.

Cheers Tim, we are mate.
Neil.
the new (2nd) windscreen arrived this morning. it's stored safely in one of my sheds, lol. andy's bringing the residual valves and panhard bar parts home today so we can finish up piping the brakes and get them bled tomorrow. we may start on the panhard bar this week, but the zephyr needs doing so i can order the rest of the airbag stuff so who knows......
neil.
edit... got the parts from andy (at rally design) so we can finish the brake pipes tomorrow.
we made up the last few pipes with the residual valves in line, so they're ready to bleed now. then it's safe to soft tow over the road and swap with the zephyr.
neil.
brakes now bled and there were no leaks which is always good when every part has been replaced or resealed. it has a good solid pedal feel with not much too travel. hopefully that part of the job's done until it gets a disc brake conversion all round, but that won't be until after next summer as i want to use it next year as much as possible. oh and every time i looked at the master cylinder bracket i knew it had to have some kind of support off of the master cylinder at the rear. the original cylinder sat up inside a channel like bracket that extended back to the floor behind the cylinder so we made a bracket incorporating part of the old channel bracket that was cut off to mount the new one. it now feels much more solid with no floor flex at all.
zephyr next.
neil.
Nice one Neil, don't spend too much time on that Zephyr we don't want the Nash feeling left out [emoji23]

i've ordered some more bits for the airbag install. a panel with 2 dual needle gauges and 4 manual 'paddle' type switches, from the states including shipping and duties for £165 (the pound is almost 1:1 with the dollar!). the air goes to and from the switches so no solenoids or associated wiring. this still allows full control over each bag so front/back/side to side and corner to corner movement. for a tank it will be behind the rear seat so i wanted bigger than the normal 3 or 5 gallon (15 or 25ltrs roughly) tank so looked on ebay and bought a new repro scania lorry 30 ltr (6 gallon) yank for £59.95, a bargain i thought. also a pressure switch to trigger the compressor relay for under £4 (actually 2 as at that price i'll keep a spare).
not swapped the cars around yet as dawn's had me sorting stuff for a dog proof fence on the retaining wall at the back of our house, there's nothing to stop them or us stepping off of the 4'6"/5' wall down to the back yard (been like it for 15+ years, lol) but we're getting 2 new puppies in november so she's all of a panic about it. so.... we've made steel post brackets to bolt to the top of the wall and folded angle brackets to join the slats together so i can save getting longer/more expensive bits of wood, lol. i even got 6' posts to cut in half as she wants it 3' high and 5' is the shortest available off the shelf. 5' are £14 and 6' are £15 so cut the 6' ones in half and my 3' posts are now £7.50 each. you knew my nana was scottish right? :thumbs_up_smiley:

fence is all done bar some paint :thumbs_up_smiley: the base brackets are 10mm plate (from a bench mount 10 ton press) and offcuts of angle iron i had laying about. they're plenty butch for sure. you can see the folded brackets on the joins. the post caps are just offcuts of the top 4" slat shaped with a coarse flapwheel on my grinder. we added some battens in between the slats for added puppy proofing and joined them with strips of ally, again stuff laying around. all the brackets are painted with black smoothrite, expensive but good stuff.

our 14 year old grandson who lives with us after doing his school work yesterday was press ganged into paint duties on the new fence under my instruction, lol. we got a good first coat of the battleship grey that dawn had chosen on it all so although all the timber is pressure treated it's now 'belt and braces' water proof. it was a bit rainy on and off today so the second coat will have to wait until a dry day to apply it.
in nash news the new air tank arrived, as did the new bead roller (from switzerland). it was cheaper to ship one from there (on ebay) than to get one in the uk. i already own a bead roller but lent it to someone and can't for the life of me remember who and they haven't returned it.... with the bead roller, my shrinker stretcher and the new english wheel we should be able to make up repair panels for the damaged o/s rear 1/4 panel. if it was just dented i'd repair what's there but the multiple holes drilled into it to pull the dents out mean it'll be easier to replace some sections completely. it baffles me why they drilled the holes as there are no inner rear wings as such (like a tri chevy) and you can access the back of the entire 1/4 panel from b post to rear light and top to bottom with the rear wheel removed :bang:

exactly mate, i think that a lot these days :( we can't slow it down though so onwards and upwards as they say. the led floodlight i ordered for the back garden arrived yesterday, we needed a bit more light so we can see the dogs at night what with the new fence and all. there was still some bits of 'the bed frame that keeps on giving' left so that was soon a wall mounted post with the new light attached to it. couldn't wait for dark so we could see how bright it was....... errr maybe i should've got the 100w instead of the 200w, it's like blackpool illuminations  it needed pointing down a tad but it's shall we say adequately lit out there now

no mate, they do a 300w too but were out of stock. i was thinking back to 50w halogen floodlights so thought that'll be too bright and 200w was the brightest they had so got that. i forgot leds are much brighter these days, it must be the equivalent to 1000w or something
oh well.
the zephyr's owner came here today and with a mate and they got it running briefly so he's happy. they're back next sunday with the fuel tank and some new ethanol proof pipe to hopefully make it a driver, i always hated pushing cars and it's not here for that so.....

it's getting like christmas lately with bits and bobs arriving. the gauge/'switch' panel arrived along with pressure switches, airline and some fittings. i'm not sure if i'll leave the 'soft' flexi pipes on the back of the gauge/switch panel, i don't like them. i have the fittings to swap it all for hard nylon like the rest of the system will be.
i also got an impco 200-d which is an lpg 'carb'. it's a nos 2.5" bore dual diaphram mixer that flows enough gas to support a 215hp engine. it was very cheap so despite not doing the lpg swap yet (he says, lol) it was so cheap i had to buy it now. it does give me the option to either turbo the 2.0 pinto and run it on gas or swap the 4.2 holden v8 in n/a on gas. either way the petrol tank and all it's fuel system will go and i'll only use lpg.
neil.
so i forgot to say i had a bo11ocking today for keep ordering nash parts , so to keep her happy i just ordered a twin pack of viair 444c compressors off ebay . to be fair i used paypal credit to spread it over 18 months (under £20/month) and after extensive research they were my choice of compressor. the cheapest i'd found were £165 each inc' vat here and more once shipping and duties are applied from the usa due to crappy exchange rate. the pair were listed as buy it now for £299 with free p&p so what was i supposed to do? i guess i'll face the music when they arrive, lol.

Haven't read everything but I've not seen any mention of an air tank. Just in case you're thinking its unnecessary, I'd say it is if you want instant air, not for dancing around ( with air??), but just making height adjustments without having to wait for compressor(s) to kick in and get to pressure etc

sorted mate, but rather than the £120-180 they want for 'proper' 3-5 gallon air suspension tanks i bought a new repro scania truck one off ebay. 30 litres (a bit over 6 gallons) for only £59.95 inc' delivery. that idea came easy after working in the haulage industry with my dad most of my life.
this afternoon i decided we'd change the pipes on the switch/gauge panel to hard nylon rather that the supplied 'washer' pipe (that's what it looks like) it came with. during the change i noticed the 'nipples' on the switches are about 4.5mm bore but all the 't' pieces are only 2.5mm. that's no good and luckily as i didn't know if the panel came with pipes and fittings i'd ordered 6mm push fittings for the job. so they were all swapped out and the vent holes in the switch backs were drilled to 4.5mm too. i'd watched a youtube video of this panel being setup and used and the guy drilled the holes too but said it made no difference. i'm not surprised if all the rest of the connections are too small also. hopefully by opening up all the lot it'll go up and down a little quicker.
it's a shame the zephyr's here for it's welding as i'd like it if we could get a start on the bag install now i have the parts.

That Zephyr will soon get welded mate

i'm still getting odd fittings dribbling in through the post mate, it'll all be here soon.
they came and hooked up the petrol tank in the zephyr today and it now starts, stops, goes forwards and backwards and even stops (whatever next!). so when i can rope ashley in which probably won't be until saturday we can get the cars swapped over.
today though the tiling was done in my front porch, it had a good coat of tanking paint saturday as it's only single brick walls. with this colder weather i doubt we can grout until wednesday so dawn will have to continue taking parcels in through the front room window, lol. at least i'm holding up my end of the deal getting house jobs sorted for her, it turns out i like delegating.
more soon, neil.

ash popped round after work and we towed the nash over the road and drove the zephyr in ready for it's weldathon. i couldn't resist a few pics of the nash sat outside, lol. i know it's getting the airbags now but i had to drop the front a bit so i made a pair of spring compressors for the peculiar setup it has and lopped 4 coils off of each spring . at the height it's sitting there's still about 3" to the bumpstops :D. i think the front is about where it wants to be but the rear will be an inch higher, i do want to use it a lot so it needs to be practical after all.

so looking forward to brake upgrades it looks like i'll use mk4 mondeo front and rear calipers, same car for the rear discs (302mm) and focus rs 2.5 front discs (336mm). discs that size shouldn't look lost in the 18" wheels and all of those parts are pretty cheap to buy, i like cheap. 4/6 pot wilwood's would be nice but the budget isn't there these days.
