refilled box tonight, hopefully no puddles under it tomorrow!
Well Poo http://images.proboards.com/v5/images/smiley/angry.png
Puddle under box again tonight.
Beginning to wonder if its a crack in the brazed joint for the threaded bung. Cleaned it carefully again & will try to check later exactly where the oil is leaking from.
Looks like the sump will need to be removed and strip all the paint to try to re braze it or clean it off and get it tig'd on.
******ks.
Did get some nice new swaged trans cooler hoses though http://images.proboards.com/v5/images/smiley/smiley.png
looks like we are all having bits that are giving us greef but we all get there in the end hope you get it sorted soon
Threaded bung on to the sump ? marks was cracked there, gave it a quick clean with a flapper wheel, blast of electrical cleaner and welded it up with the mig, hasn't leaked since
Hard to tell with gloss black paint, but it still seems to be the joint between the sump bung & the intermediate adaptor. Maybe the Loctite did not glue it up after all.
My first thought was RTV silicone on the threads to seal it, but been advised the trans fluid will eat through it?
I could weld the adaptor to the sump plug I guess?
Can't you try a dowty in there instead ?
Hmmm that's a good idea, its a tapered thread but it does bottom out already.
Been reading up on the RTV sealant I have & it seems to be transmission fluid resistant so maybe a little of that & a Dowty will sort it, cheers John :thumbs_up_smiley:
Been thinking about that Steve, wont know till I drain the box again tonight but it might be a straight thread and maybe should always have had a sealing washer. I bought the gauges 20 years ago, so a washer would be an easy thing to lose over that time.
Not much to report, drained gearbox down again tonight, as John suggested I'm going to try a copper crush washer under the adaptor boss head - lets hope 3rd time lucky.
Fitted the trans cooler lines that Guy (bigyellataxi on here) supplied;

And started reshaping some Adel clamps to fit both hoses through, need to drill & tap chassis tomorrow to fit them.

Dragged myself out to the garage today - very tired at mo as work is mental - recession, what recession!
Guy (bigtellataxi) was kind enough to send me some 'samples' of copper & Dowty sealing rings for the gearbox sender adapter so I fitted them today with a little RTV silicone, I'll leave it overnight to set & try the trans fluid tomorrow hopefully it will have cured the leak.
Started fitting the trans cooler lines, but on the last hole my 5mm tap broke - bugger! - only lasted 20 years :( will have to wait till next week for new taps to be delivered. Got it clipped in temporarily.

Also fitted the dowty seals (again supplied by Guy) to the rear axle so hopefully no more drips there tomorrow.
Well I tried filling the gearbox again today.........and it still leaked!! Arrggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
Bit the bullet & dropped the pan to see what the problem is. Looked like it was leaking through the brazed joint - must be a small hole/crack in the joint somewhere.
So after about 6 lots of cleaning/tinning I soldered up the joint from the inside as well.

put the pan back on and tried some fluid - no leaks :) so filled it completely and the garage floor is oil free - at long last! :yes:
I had fitted the Dowty washers on the back axle yesterday and that is also now drip free :thumbsup2:
Started setting out the shifter cable after this all seems good and I now know where the P clips need to go to secure the cable.

well done mark on stopping the leeks its on to the next bit ,and getting closer to the fire up
inside looks great
Glad you got it sorted Mark. does look good in there mate. Keep it coming.
Cheers. Tim W.
Work has halted a lot of progress, and also been sourcing bits for the vacuum modulator for the trans and all the other vacuum hoses.
I searched all over the net for stainless or any other 1/4" or 6mm tubing, could not find anything (except copper) longer than 600-900mm except the brass tube in B&Q.
Never mind, the brass looks nice n shiny :D
This is how it looked after bending up;

and fitted to gearbox;

and plumbed to inlet manifold.

Still need to T into this bit for the vacuum gauge.
Other jobs have been little things like fitting grommets and fine tuning the length of the Aeroquip hoses.
Hah! everyone has 1/4" now I've searched high & low for it!
