Well the cam is broken in and its running quite well, but I'm not totally happy with it. It drives great but there is still a light knock under load https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...smiley/sad.png Just don't know what else I can do with it now. Maybe the pre-load is not tight enough?
I have sussed out the gearbox issue though. It's dropping into second gear when you lift off the throttle when it ought to remain in top. The 'bang' in the driveline is the shock of the inappropriate downshift. I'm no auto box specialist so any pointers would be welcome. To my mind it's a little late to go into top gear as well.
Would the vacuum modulator be the culprit? - it's an adjustable one.
I have done other bits on it as well, it had no working handbrake, it was there but would only go 2 clicks and it would be solid, but have no action on the rear brakes at all. Stripping it down and the reason was apparent very quickly. Someone had extended the bottom of the handbrake lever to get it under the floor but this had destroyed the leverage ratio of the handbrake. Picture of their effort below.

It was a fairly easy job to cut the extension off and clean it all up, then after a bit of measuring I cut the back of the mount off and welded it up much higher so the rear of the handbrake is now under the floor where it needs to be. Altering the bodged extension meant the rod was too short, so I made a new part using an M8 bolt. Both parts ground off prior to welding here.

And the finished article ready to go back into the car;

It's still not brilliant, but it now stops the wheels turning - it may improve as the self adjusters tighten up. I had to strip both rear drums to check the adjusters were working - one side was seized so I freed that up. Of course the spring that holds the shoes together snapped as I removed it https://storage.proboards.com/forum/...smiley/sad.png Luckily I managed to weld the end back on - not ideal but it's working for now.
Another job was fitting the inner windscreen surround that's been in my garage for months, nice to have that fitted where it belongs.

As it isn't fully rebuilt there are bound to be little noises. These are made worse ny installing new components especialy where they increase cylinder pressure . Could be small ends or even a bit of piston slap . I wouldn't sweat it yet .
Whats the timing set at Mark ? Plugs ? Dizzy ?

10 degrees John. Dizzy is electronic. Yep, it's got plugs :)
It goes really well, but the knock is killing me :( I forgot to mention, they had the vacuum advance hooked up to the wrong side of the canister, it REALLY liked having the vacuum advance working properly!
Any ideas on the gearbox?
surely if it was lifter preload it would be ticking/tapping not knocking?
neil.
I don't know Neil, I'm only wondering if it was set that there was not enough 'lift' left in them it would knock a bit? Maybe clutching at straws.
Pull the smallest shim and test it again ? Timing set with the vacuum off and the port capped ?

My thoughts too John, and yes timing set with vacuum disconnected.
Engine itself is running sweet, if no knock I'd be very happy.
Any thoughts on the gearbox shifting down?
Gotta hand it to you Mark, it would be frustrating enough dealing with all these setbacks on our own project, much less someone else's car.
Top marks to Mark!
I would have thought the vacuum modulator is set incorrect. It tskes full vacuum from the other carb port if i'm right ?

Yes that's right John.
I read up on it ...from summit anticlockwise softer ...clockwise harder. No more than 2 full turns per adjustment and try out ..hope it helps

I'll give it a go John, It looks like it is adjustable so we will see what happens.
i thought you measured for the rocker shims? if so i wouldn't go pulling shims now. just a thought, was it rebored or just honed and new rings fitted? if the latter it could be a little piston slap. it'll be quieter once warmed up if so.
neil.
Neil,
I did but there was such a wide variance on them I'm wondering if one (or two) are not able to pump up enough?
No idea on rings/bores/pistons. Pistons don't look new when I looked with the boroscope but I would assume at least a hone & rings as the compression is very good. It still knocks when fully hot.
Sounds like you've not got a stethoscope? Great bit of kit for no more than about £20. Great fun to listen to stuff just for the hell of it, even better if it helps hunt down a problem!

I've got a long screwdriver, does the same thing if you rest it just in front of your ear. Sounds like a noisy cam lifter :(
If it is I'm done on this. I'm at rock bottom emotionally and I can't put myself through anymore.
I've spent a year on it, my mums funeral is on wed and I'm not enjoying life anymore, I need to walkaway for my own good.
Give it back Mark and leave Andy enjoy it while the summers here ? Sorry too hear about your mum.

You've worked bloody hard on that car, I am sure Andy apprecites it. Sorry to hear about your loss.
