Budget POP build

Not had much time in on the POP the past week or so , but managed to squueze in a couple of things.

Filled the old petrol filler hole

and made a bit that fits under the rear valance and provides a mount for the reverse / fog light and the exhaust tips. The idea being the exhaust will distract your eyes from the lighting unit .

The unit itself is suppoed to be a surface mount , but its even more obvious when mounted like that so decided to flush mount it from the rear . A wee bit more work but makes it less visable and easier to service if required .

Once its fitted under the rear vallance about an inch back from the edge it kinda disapears . After the test I might give it a little tint but its not as though Im ever going to see it from the driver seat :).. ( since decided that this wasnt the solution, spent more time looking at it which was the opposite of its purpose so started to think of alternatives and came up with a solution. )

Broke the rear axle in my coupe and bust the timing belt on my land rover heading out to rescue the coupe .. Daily driver failed its MOT so a bit busy fixing all my broken stuff.. :(

Ticking away at the POP project , filled the dash with some pre loved gauges bought years ago and left in a box in the loft .. Was short of a rev counter so scares up an old SW one from the same box of gauges .. Not an exact match, indeed not even close but it does a turn..

Needed somwhere to put the various warni g lights and switches so made up a small dash pod thing . Its since been trimmed , massaged and hammers into a domed profile on the topside and blended into the main dash.. It grows on you .. :) well maybe not but it serves its purpose .

The V8 gauge layout is just a bit of fun ..

Still messing around with the old Pop , after making a panel for the rear fog / reverse lamp and tailpipe supprts , didnt like it , so scrapped that idea nd frenched it into the rear vallance . Its on full show but its less conspicuous .. How does that work ?

Cant remember if I mentioned it earlier but made up all the sections for the exhaust in stainless but using smithys mufflers . Hopefully they will sound OK ..

made a few finishers for the boot hinge supports , a baffle for the fuel tank, installed a ne filler neck made a body sill thats still a work in progress :) and welded in a thing on top of the dash to house some flush mount switches and relevant IVA stuff

not to keen on the surface mount so plan to french it flush , Frenching was popular in the 70s :)

Been a few other things too finished up a rear wing and radiused it to suit the tyre , still some work required on that to extend it to the lower edge of the body sill , fabricate and weld in some tail light housings and wire the edge, but the good thing is one down one to go :)

Realy need to pul my finger out and crack on but its freezing in the shed ..

Desperately trying to real myself in and not purchase another project car . got one in the pipeline but strugling with wants and needs ..

I definately dont need another project , but how perfect is this A40 somerset profile .

No hiding its a photoshop but heavens is it a sweet little Kustom ..

A version of this has been built in the UK , its not a recent concept image, but its resurfaced and seduced me LOL..

Got a donor on the hook but trying to talk myself out of it . To be honest I dont think I have the skills to pull it off, im just a bit love struck with ideas above my ability :(

In my 60s , 2 pop projects , 2 model As , a camper and land rover .. last thing I need is another headache .. weirder still I envy the guys that have just one project ... Its where I would like to be , my willpower is weak but my imagination is over active .

Totally agree on that A40 concept image,it is a distraction, it got me thinking though,do you think the A40s bigger cousin the A70 Hereford/Hampshire would carry off the concept better being as its almost identical to the A40 but bigger, I could image putting all that work into an A40 then someone does the same on a A70 and it worked better.
A bit harder to source an A70 though i suspect, but they are out there.

Maybe a Morris Oxford MO convertible ....nah ...finish the pop you might have too much fun driving that !Attachment 66715

Cool idea but I doubt you'd fit in the A40 Ian, I know I wouldn't and you've got a bit more height than me, but I've got breadth!

Back to your pop,I put straight thrush 'mufflers' on my Pop when it had a RV8 in it,let's say everyone knew where i was in the village every time I went out in it [:D]

Long tail pipes tend make them a bit raspy I have found, but it may be worth a suck it and see.
Have got room for a balance pipe round the middle of the car ?
Or,do you have room between the back axle and the rear panel to tuck up an oval baffle box running parallel with the back axle,there must be a lot of modern cars using that set up with dual pipes.

Space is tight on a Pop aint it :yes:

Hi Ian , Space is definately at a premium .. Once the body comes back off and the chassis gets buttoned up , exhasut fitted etc I will look at a crossover . If thats not gonna work maybee just slot in some 2 inch stainless washers cut in half and staggered along the length of a pipe to slow the gasses basically a makeshift baffle ? Im hoping the smithys can cope , they are pretty decent with a flathead providing there is plenty bends in the pipe to slow everything down a tad , but the higher compression and revier rover might not react well as per the old thrush muflers I'll give it a go :)

Hi Chris , were 21st century size wise , when you see the size of new cars you wonder just how big folk are gonna get , I think after a good long consideration on the A40 , the sensible practicle and proper thing to do is to enjoy the art work and focus on the current fleet .. After hours of research there is more to that A40 coupe concept than meets the eye , proportionally its been fudged a fair bit to get it to flow as well as it presents in the pic , Its ot just a chop and coupe , its a complete tail end and side profile reprofile too and thats just the start .. Its a lovely looking concept though .

I'm lucky to be long term good friemds with James . We often bat ideas about together. He's come up witha couple in the past that still haunt my dreams!!LOL

That A40 concept will haunt me for a long time Kev .. The time I spent comparing the concept to an original and the car thats been chopped and couped based on that concept image, before concluding that there was a lot more to the image than meets the eye , some really subtle shifts to get it to where it is . Its less of a chop and coupe and more a full coach build to get all the tricks in there.

Best to admit defeat before even begining :) worth while exercise working it out though..

Your not helping with the photoshop Doug :eek:. but your right about the current projects . Got my head together, I need to get the Iva Pop done and , then the bathroom, the decking the eaves and sofits and probably some new windows .. There thats that taken care of .. :)

Ian, your (short) list of jobs made me smile as it resonates loudly with me! It also makes me wonder, do hotrodders all have lists of 'other' things to be done and, if so, why is that? Is it because time and energy is expended on hotrods and other things tend to get neglected or have a lower priority? Or is it that typically being practical types we tend to want to do it ourselves (and / or not pay for someone to mess stuff up) at the risk of things getting delayed due to time constraints or priorities? Bound to be other possibilities too! I can't imagine there are many hotrodders who just pay out for gardening, home repairs, etc and spend free time doing what the masses all seem to do, shopping!

The red Austin looks kinda short / dumpy to me, unlike the blue one which looks rather more swoopy, and therein lies the photoshop trick, or, more pertinently, trap. I like the dumpy look though, reminds me of the short, really fat looking American planes that I'm sure have a name that's escaping me!

Got to go collect some scaffolding for some jobs, but I've not finished an exhaust hanger repair I started yesterday!!

yes it does seem to be a hotrodder 'thing' chris. we (I) do the minimum to keep dawn happy while doing everything i can to do with projects, be they mine or for others. it really is a lifestyle not a hobby. i've resorted to paying others to do 'house' jobs if i can afford it, partly these days due to my back not allowing me to do them in a timely manner. the phrase 'you can't rush these things' comes to mind, the kids and me made a new (normal room height) roof for my conservatory with a large triple glazed roof light and a fibreglass covering. i've never really got into fibreglass on that scale before but it came out well i think and dawn's happy that it's done, especially after buying the rooflight and fibreglass kit over 4 years ago. :eek:

I bought caulking seal to do the windows summer past in time for winter . Im not saying whan or what summer past but looked at the caulking tubes and it went out of date last year .. Havent tested it but it probably like a brick .

I would choose to Do It myself Chris as I dont like paying top dollar for a pro to do the job to a worse standard than I could do it myself . Fitted the last bathroms about 15 years ago , putting off a sealing job there has caused a joist failure so ne batroom onthe cards along with a full re tile etc .. Had the kitchen professionally done but not sure they made that great a job .. and never came back to do the snagging ..

I have to do this stuff for my old fella as well ,the week before last it was cupbord doors and fence repair , this week its his lawn mower and light bulbs , last week it was his hearing aids, telephone and TV .. Time whizzes past and a week can go by in a heartbeat and not a spanner spun in the shed .. Got to go and get the dinner on .. cheers for now
