Nats at Liecster we should have WON best display dont you think. Maybe not. Mick Bannell in the middle . Always remember had not rain for a year but it did then LOL.
On the 31st of august 87 i went to a classic car show in my mk2 cortina that i was slowly turning into a leadslead, the show was somewhere on the london bound side of the a127, cant remember the exact location though. onto the pics, My mk2 is firstl then a cool 70s style consul capri, but the main headturner there was the hot tuna model y with filled in rear windows, cant remember ever seeing that one again?? It was a very nice rod.
Lots more to come, i will be going back to the rayleigh weir soon...
now heres the first installment from the weir 16th september 87, excuse some of the pics, but its all history!, first we have a dodge, then a b which i remember on the front of custom car with a bloke dressed like a dummy next to it!, then we have a rare Packard clipper super, more to come, including that dreaded pink 105e that was mentioned further up the thread!, enjoy...
Mark the Model Y is the one Terry Ball had in silver and Pink, not sure if he owned it in this pic though? Terry sold it about 8??? years ago.The Y is proberly still about somewhere.
The Consul Capri i see about 4/5 years ago at Rayliegh and looked near enough the same as in the pic complete with the side pipe, only wing mirrors had been added. I spoke to the girl who owned it,she said it had just come out of a garage/lock up 4 the first time in ten years.
hi steve model y was built by eric cornes
he lived in maldon essex
was a mate of bob nixons
bob had it as his wedding car
eric whent to aus in 1984
it was sold at the 1984 nats at knebworth
went down south coast then martin ockendon brought back to essex and terry got it of him
dont no were it is now mick
Heres some more from the weir, 16th september 87. First we have the hot lemon minor again, i think it had a 289 in it, (looks like wilf stacey behind the minor in the red jacket) i saw hot lemon a couple of years ago at harlow so i think its still about, then we have the wide very 70s vitesse, i think this was used on the tele in the levis advert, theres a gold pop beside it which i dont recognise?, then finally we have the dreaded pink 105e anglia that was mentioned further up the thread, sorry just had to do it!!, oh & the blue consul capri of course..........
That could be? Steve Dodds Mustang in the background of Hot Lemon,(left pic) as it was white when he got it and he did put the pro stock hood scoop on.I wonder if he used any bits of the crashed zephur, axle, wheels??
I knew that little Anglia wouldn't go totally without notice. It was a one owner, low mileage car when I got my hands on it. I put a pair of front wings on it and called it job done. That was until Celia insisted she wanted it pink! All in that car owed me around £175 and served Celia well for a number of years doing a daily commute between Grays and Southend.
Thanks for sharing all these pictures with us, although I don't know a lot about the owners and the history of the cars they are bringing back a lot of memories of when I first got into modified cars. I used to attend the Rayleigh Weir quite frequently later on in either in my 23 T roadster or my 24 T Doctor's Coupe, so I think I made up for a somewhat shady start!
hi yeah that was steve dodds mustang
he got it off me mate in maldon his name was steve barrowman
was a stock 289 mustang
steve dodd had two zodys
first had a v6
then the next one had a 260 ford in it which the bonnet came up as he
was giong along and he crashed the zody
so he got the mustang of me mate and built a great looking car
dont now if he still owns the mustang havent seen him latley
mick
yep steve still owns the stang, its on its 3rd(style of) set of wheels now.
The john Webster Minor had a bolt in roll bar driver cage aswell that could be removed if need be, knocked up by Geof Owen
As Mick mentioned he had another Mk2 after the blue and white one. This other MK2 was on the cover of Street Machine in about 84? it was tubbed out by Hot Rod Enterprises on Canvey island, had stock looking bodywork, with the rear doors not welded up and the bumpers were on aswell,(differant to the other mk2s in the area) It was one colour blue and had chrome 5 spokes similer to what was on the stang when that first came out.
There was a few small pics of this Mk2 in Custom Car when they done a feature on cars and companys in the Southend and serounding area, that was about 84 aswell.
Some of you will no doult remember the Rayleigh Weir nights started at another pub in Rayleigh the Travellers Joy about 1977-8. We had to move when they was revamping it. Good move is was great down the Weir. Here is some pics from the Travellers Joy.http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/scan0004.jpghttp://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/scan0054.jpghttp://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/scan0055.jpghttp://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/scan0053.jpghttp://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/scan0045.jpghttp://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...9/scan0045.jpg
Ken,
When you post picture links press enter between each one that way they'll go down the page, not across.
Ian.
If you look just to the left in the background of the 50 chevy pic it looks like the Hot Car feature car "White Heat"
redmad who had the 32 cabrio,i know it went to dave palmer and was unchanneled ,a mate told me he saw it in a yard years later in bits but has since said he didnt !!!
lowflyer,,that morris was owned by a lady in west end, esher
The 32 in those pics about 1978 it belong to Eddy Dodwell. But it was built by Russ Ward. There was a feature in Custom Car in the 70s front cover i think. Cady engine and back axel i think all steel too.http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...ad2009/321.jpg
thanks
heres some more from that night, red was quite a popular colour that evening!!, thats the only place i ever saw that minor (mynamite), (awesome name) i wonder what happened to that cause i have never saw it at any other shows or in any magazines, i never went drag racing much so i dont know if it saw much action, (got any of it in action mr timetravel?), dont know anything about the others but they are red & hopefully not dead!! (sorry).
There's a few pics of that Jag powered Minor on here http://www.timetraveldvds.co.uk/gall...;83/index.html when it debuted in '83. I don't remember seeing it much back then, would love to think it's sitting in a garage somewhere waiting to be found and put back on the strip.......
Hope it ties in ok. All local to Southend cars. 1987 Wilf and Geoffs work shop. Steve dodds Mustang.Colin Taylors Camaro,Jon Websters Hot Lemon,John Davis Opel,Chris Ransomes GTO and Wilfs Gone Crazy. Too the right is Rob Smallworths 55. Steve Dodds had it for a little while when it was gasser stlye.http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...09/87WILFS.jpg
'Ere Ken - I was driving down the A127 towards Southend and turned left in to Progress Road. It was 7.30pm on Friday 6th June 1979.
I can't remember what car I was driving - you must have a photo of it! tell me what it was (you seem to have photos of every hot rod or yank that ever turns a wheel at any time ever in the UK) Help me here!!!!!!!!!!!!! - seriously though these are excellent photos bud - great fun - and important - you make us all remember cars and events and people that would be lost to history.
ken, that pics awesome!, silly me ive just realised which mustang steve dodds is!! It was puzzling, must have been a blonde moment! Its the american heartbeat one, silly me wake up, (hope im right!)
i will be putting more southend on soon, bit busy loading thousands of nostalgic slides at the moment including cars that have been to southend!!
It was a biege Austin Maxi Ross!!
Can somebody clear up a little mystery for me........I've had this photo for years, it was taken around 1976, I assumed it belonged to Pete Desolar. Question; did it ever belong to Pete...........and eventually it became 'Roaring Rat'? Thanks.
http://usera.ImageCave.com/alsretro/...vy (1970s).jpg
Just double check was Petes-Keiths-Tonys-vincents-Brookes sorry for got first name. Hope i have not missed any out ps. Probaly some american before that lot !
Just remembered Nick Vincent ,Ken Brookes picture been on before i think not mine. Its the 57 in Keith back yard Southend before being painted black.http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...21_max0002.jpg
Thanks for clearing it up Ken!
anybody no what happened to Colin Taylors Camaro?what car did this become?
And also the Opel Manta, cant see much of it in this pic though.Wilf painted it the same red has Kens nomad. It had a steel flip front,351 cu in motor, slightly narrowed rear and differant front wheels to the back.It was also featured in Street Machine. There was another red Opel about alot more pro street.
No Tim Cook never owned the 57 Mark. Tim put the supercharger on it when Keith sold it to Tony Vandaputte it was his car when in Shutdown i think. Then Slick Tricks made it into Roarin' Rat.
http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...108-135947.jpg
The picture in Keith's backyard is one of mine. I had arranged with Keith to buy the '57 as it was in the picture and took some shots on the day that we agreed the deal. He had bought it from Pete De Solla. As far as I remember Pete had bought it in Harrow originally and I'm not certain but it may have a connection with the Currell's who originally had Barry Moore's and Martin Chomistek's 57's.
I went down to Keith's with Pete Devlin to pick up the 57 and Keith had changed his mind about selling. I was pretty disappointed as it was a good straight car. I didn't realise at the time but obviously the call for a film car for 'Shutdown' had come in and Keith went on to have the car painted black/refreshed and be driven by Tim. Tim did not own it.
Fast forward a few months and Keith then offered me the ex Martin Bonner 56 which he had recently had back from bodywork and I bought as a bare shell. I remember the discussion on that one taking place in the exhibitors bar at the Custom Car show and his girlfriend encouraging him to sell it to me because I'd lost out on the 57. Despite missing out on the 57 I do remember that Keith was a nice guy to deal with and I was not surprised that he went on to greater things.:)
In the colour shot above the blue 56 had come in from Ireland and had a truck diesel in and in the black and white shot the ex Martin Bonner 56 is just peeking out behind the 57.
Remember going round there my self Keith was Undersealing the 57 after it was sprayed black. He had the gun on a air compresser some thing when wrong and poor old Keith covered him self all over with the underseal. He had is Red model A pick up in one of the buildings too.
http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...108-135947.jpg
Just found Pete De solla's own account of the yellow 57. He bought it in 1970 and was intending to drag race it. He took his inspiration from 'Popular Hot Roddings' project X. ( A car still being developed to this day but a long way from it's roots!) He stripped/rebuilt the car completely but finances shelved the racing plan and he put it on the street. Sold it to Keith in Summer '75. Apparently it was in the 1973 Custom Car show(Crystal Palace?)
Extracted from an early Tri Chevy club newsletter.....
Yep read that piece myself yesterday Steve. Refreshers the old gray cells. Well it helps mine better than these brain training gezmos.
SOLD This a very old ad by the way.
I think I agreed on £1000 with Keith! :)
Here is the article that was in CJ about 1978ish that Steve mentioned earlier with part one As you know the car which is Roarin' Rat today.
[quote=SG57;182554], today I read thename Barry Moore a name I had been trying to put to a car for yonks.
quote]
That was a very cool car Roger and driven in a rather 'spirited' fashion. :)
[quote=plumpcars;182642] That car was one of the many that 'drove' me on. After reading the History Board and bringing back times and cars from the back of my feeble mind the name Barry Moore was a name I could not recall. Now it's like a light switched on, brilliant.
ken you got any more pics like the cinema, grey primer gtx and 57 one
Barry Moore moved to San Bernardino Ca around 1980 (he was actually an American who grew up in England, born in Alaska) I did see him once or twice in California years ago but who knows where he is now.He did continue his love affair with 57 chevys because the last I heard he was driving a red one. In the mid 70s he was a regular at Heston on saturday nights cruising with the 'Spirit of the Fifties' clan.Back then his blue belair 2dr hardtop was the nicest around before they all started coming in from the States.
A group of us regularly drank at a pub in Pinner called the Victory. Barry had a reputation locally for 'driving it hard' and it reached the point where the police were going to catch him whatever. One night Barry left the Victory and unknown to anybody the local police had decided to wait for him in various locations. They duly pulled over a 'blue American car' as requested and quickly had it surrounded and the driver out. Trouble was they had pulled the wrong Car, most police officers did not know the difference between a 57 Chevy and a 66 Chevelle. Ironically they had pulled the one car out of all that regularly went everywhere at 30mph...
Barry lived to race another day but they did get closer. It was probably a good thing that he left these shores not long after.
Great times.
(If you're reading this John Your manner of driving was highlighted purely to show the irony of the night's action...:D)
At the Gerry's Cherrys 'car lot' at I think the '78 Nationals my boring black immaculate 4 door had something racey written on the windshield (wish I could remember) in shoe whitener by Y's guy (I think). Written on Barrys total street racer was written 'owned by little old lady, only driven to church'.
I knew then that I had to have a Sport Coupe.
Heres some more shutdown piccys, 1st Tim Cook smokes 'em for the boys, then the gtx & 57 prepare to race, the camera mans leaning on ken Robbins 55 , next to that is the vanilla olay pop, then i cant remember but it was in the middle of october 77 CC with derek chapmans standard 8 (a partial anorak moment!), at the end you can just about see russ wards widearsed brown b, the 3rd pic shows a line up of spectating rods which includes bobs model y at the end, kens 55, vanilla olay & the only other one i know is brian lucases model b, finally we have Tel Powneys california dreamin which has recently been reincarnated in more of a resto rod style, (& was centrespread in cc feb 78 with a nice stocking clad lady with glasses with one leg in the air if i remember rightly!!)

Does anybody remember a yard of small workshops (about 20) back in the very late 70s,that were down the end of pound lane North Benfleet near the junction of burnt mills road. A guy named Paul owned em all. Me Dad had one of the workshops, plus there was a guy there that done abit of custom work, anybody no who it was? It was great to see some of the cars turn up there. Heres some i remember there-
Thames 400E van in for rover V8, Mk 1 Transit in for V6, 105e Anglia having the back lowered, Vauxhall droop snoop Firenza-had Rover V8-Fibersports Mk1 Capri box archs in grey primer. There was a finished clean looking white Mk 2 Cortina with the trick of putting Mk 4 zodiac rear lights across the back, Kustom brown Consul Classic-lake pipes etc that was pictured in Street Machine Readers cars
Do you mean the one shared by Wilf Stacey and Steve (Burt)?
"Bursta speed and colour" if I remember rightly.
Col.
no not that one, that was on Smilers farm? just up the road, theres been a few how type of car people down that area. The workshop i mean was down further towards the A127.I see the Firenzy there in 82,but the others were there well in the 70s thinking about it now.The workshops are all gone now, they were all behind Pauls house, the house is still there but a big home has been biult on the workshop land.

Mark the "big Rigs" wrecker was owned by Barry Curtis, his still about .The truck was a Thorneycroft Mighty Anter origenly normally used for recovering tanks. They were made in Basinstoke.Remember the Dinky toy one?
On another note doeas anybody remember a Mk 3 Zephur from the late 70s,that was from Benfleet, the car had oval shaped rear side and back windowa with a biege vinal roof, jacked up rear suspention, slot wheels, may of had side pipes?.It ofton cruised the area and was terquwise in colour, then red then black.
Redmad ken, remember that black 56 Chevy 4-door parked up in the road outside that small workshop in Hadliegh,he must of used the car as a daily driver? Dident it have Chrome 5 spokes??? Do you no what happened to it?
Yep it came over had a few owners localy. Frank was the name of the guy from Hadleigh i think. Not sure where it is his workshop is gone now i think Steve.

This Mustang used to have them four-into-one side pipes, that right Ken,and the guy still owns it. Thats Geoff Owens V6 Pop in the background and the front of a V6 Escort

It was probably George Wheelers red 460 powered '67 (which at one time had tube grille) this is no more - returning from a Dick Turpin meeting some three years ago he had the rear end lock-up and got totalled going off the A127 backward through a lamppost!! RIP Mustang (not George fortunately)

I see the car sometime pryer to this at the weir and Northwick road before it had been altered, the exhausts exited at the back and it really sounded good(this is how i liked it),Did it have the 302 in it then?and did it ever have a pro stock hood scoop for a very short time??????

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...er/6000000.jpg
Shocking business that Banger racing incident:eek:
The cougar though is looking just fine, I know new owners like to make cars there own, but for me that car will always be yellow with graphics - really suited it.
