Budget POP build

back on the horse with a minor update . Being as its bloody freezing up here in the North I need to take care of the odd task that can be achieved within the normal human exposure time to sub zero garage temperatures

With that in mind and well wrapped up I took on the task of fabricaing a flush fit fuel filler .

task 1 make a base to mount into the body

Its not much but every little helps :) currently in the process of repairing the rust issues on the drivers door , not so much fun .. :)

Added some side repeaters for the IVA. Put them where I did to emulate the old time panda ear things they used in the 50 snd 60s ..

Ahh , thats debateable Chris . I trip myself up most times on the IVA stuff , They requre side repeaters , there isnt any spec for shape of size or for E marking for that matter , A wee question arised over position so have to look into that before I do the other side . Im hoping there fine based on regs for indicators . The side repeter from memory is an angle issue , as in must be visible from certain angled projections from the rear .. Those particular units are super bright leds and are E marked , the light is compliant the location perhaps in question.

I opted for the middle of the car as its at its widest point ( excluding the wings), and not trying to hide them just minimise them as much as possible .

A question has been raised re the position, referencing eye level , but they are fairly low once the car is on the ground , approx 52 inches so probably more or less right in your face if your driving the average SUV sized car these days .. I will have to look at the regs again to satisfy myself . but to be honest ,its my preferred spot being the same area they fitted the panda ear type lights back in the 50s and 60s ..

Its been sugested as an alternative , to mount lower either above or below the beltline , below the beltline they are obscured by the door handle above was an option when I was shifting them around , but I like the idea of them being high , infact when I settled there I did think they were a bit in your face , so by default the perfect spot :)

It appears AI is your friend when looking for spec stuff these days .

With ref to the side repeaters the spec for location

no higher that 1500mm from ground 59 inches

no more than 2600mm from front 102 inches

no more than 400mm from outer most edge 15 3/4 inches

I guess I should really check this stuff first :)

Yeah,always check Ai,i did a Google Ai re mcphearson front suspension struts on Cortinas and it stated that struts were fitted to Mk3 Cortinas :lol:

Well there you go Ian. Modern be all and end all tech fails again :) no surprise really, thats the internet all over . Ref the dimensions the results were correct in this case . No so much so with some links where folk got muddled between side repeaters and side markers , There are contradictions and misinterpretation everywhere you look relating to this stuff :( Its harder to interpret some of it than it is to do it sometimes.

Ive nipped out for a quick measure up and given my final ride height, the possition of the side repeaters are all well within the dimensions specified . Had myself worried there for a bit .

Re the flush fuel filler, I did mine a while ago now (!) but into a finish painted quarter panel! I bought a billet-looking one which I think was for motorcycles maybe, marked it out using wide masking tape & with the help of a mate (cheers Rocky) squirting Plus Gas on the panel to help stop the surrounding paint from blistering, cut a 2" diameter hole (I think) into the panel. The result was perfect, no blistering or damage to the surrounding paint work & with a bit of dressing on the backside a perfect fit for the filler. Then marked the fixing holes & did the same procedure. A quick touch-up with some paint on the raw edges & fitted it & connected the silicon filler pipe inside. It's not completely flush but it's what I was after & is a lot easier to use thab the previous method which was inside the boot & right at the back!

That would have been nerve wracking cutting that hole . Its a big enough worry cutting the hole regardless but in a well sorted and painted car .. brave man :)

How does the silicone hose hold up against the fuel , will need a hose for mine soon..

It took a lot of thought & discussion at the workshop where it was done, but I was assured it would be fine!!!!:lol: However they did say I would have to do the cutting! :eek: I have yet to get it finished & on the road but as the silicon hoses are only connectors between various aluminium pipes to the tanks & not actually holding fuel for any length of time, I don't see there's much of an issue with them, time will tell I guess! :thinks:

AI (as in Artificial Inteligence, and not just a bloke called Al, or perhaps not?) recons general silicon hose isn't fuel proof but there is silicon hose with a lining that makes it fuel proof. From what I've seen (briefly) the fuel proof stuff isn't any more expensive. What I've seen has black outer with a nice red inner which of course wouldn't ordinarily be seen! Didn't look into the availability of molded hoses. Cant imagine the regular stuff would be too bothered if the fuel is just passing through but modern fuel seems to be nasty. I'd like to say we'll soon know as Mo will be able to tell, but it's not happening that quickly, is it Mr T? [emoji23]

just going to drop this here to say a big thankyou to V8POP for taking the greatest care packing the pop screen I purchased from him. Above and beyond, making a dedicated crate from pallet wood , and carefully wrapping the screen with paper and bubble wrap to cushion it in the crate , not only that but an added bonus of the original hardboard template .. Old school integrity . If you see this , thanks Tim very much appreciated , Screen travelled 600 miles via DPD and arrived next day perfectly protected and in one piece . Excellent :)

pics with neatly applied and taped outer pallet wrap removed . This is how it should be done I was genuinely impressed with the care taken to ensure this arrived in one piece . A man with standards and integrity , credit where credits due Cheers Tim , thanks again.
