.. I must find the soundtrack from Shutdown, I know it's here somewhere..........
WHAT YOU MEAN THERE WAS A PROPER SHUTDOWN RECORD??
SHUTDOWN PICS COURTESY OF BOB ROTHWELL & REDMAD...
When I find the disc i'll put the number on here it might help your hunt............ First come first served 'e' bay. 280326867409
Lunch time on the Saturday of the first Southend cruise, Myself and Keith Harvie driving down Southend high street to the seafront [you could then] in his model A pick up, can you imagin the reaction, just about every head on both sidewalks turned to watch us cruise past, A memory that will stay with me forever........................
Yeah, I did a bit with records(vinyl)back then. Curtis Clark called round and we had an evening of playing some the hotrod tracks that I had in the collection, making some suggestions for the soundtrack. At that time we had no idea that it might translate into a compilation LP.
Heres the front and rear cover, plus the cover of one of the other old hotrod discs sat beside it.
The frontcover has a pic of Tony Andersons "trouble and strife" rail, on the rear a list of tracks and their history, plus a pic of two fuelers at SPR.
As for that Blackburn Beverley, I recall it was dismantled into its major components (wings, fuselage, tail assy, etc) for transfer by road to its new home.
P.S. Hi Dave, finished that old splitscreen yet? !
Look what I found in the attic, arn't attics great, I've scaned some of the more sexy pages............ http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95001.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95002.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95003.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95004.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95005.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95006.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95007.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95008.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95009.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95010.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95011.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95012.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95013.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95014.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95015.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...dvds/95016.jpg

I wish I still had the split martyn it would be worth a fortune now........... 53 Austin van now, and at this rate it will be a retirement project..........
Awesome catalogue nick, i am seriously thinking about moving my upstairs to the downstairs & the downstairs to the upstairs so the weight in the loft isnt so worrying, then i thought about the cooker, the fridge, the telly the microwave, lol, lol, lol!!
Those Americar whole page adverts and their style came about because Keith (like me) had enjoyed reading the early 60s HotRod and Popular Hot Rodding titles. He remembered in particular similar types of ads in those, and had spent plenty of time reading through all the deals they offered, so when it came to him advertising, he followed the pattern. Even when he moved to USA he continued with the same style (PAW-performance automotive wholesale)not just because he admired the style, but because it worked.
And that numberplate in the ad was fixed to several of his vehicles including his Rover V8 CF van.
Thought id better post a few more my own pics before that avenue of pleasure is closed off soon, never mind i will just look at them all myself, thousands more to go....
Its at about this time i have lost track of the years of the avaiation shows, im quite particular about getting my pics in order, i think these could be 82, but am not sure, if anyone can help please??

and some more, I think the camaro was dick smiths?, i saw it being built in a old rented garage near broomfield hospital, used to cycle there special just to see it on my pushbike, (complete with ape hangers banana seat air horns & roller skate wheely bars!!
Hi Mopar,
Humphrey was a junior member of the CDSRC. (Chris Monk). He used to come to the meetings on Mondays, back in the 70's/80's. And also came to many runs and race meetings. He was both Bob's and my "Shotgun" on rod runs, until he passed his test and bought a monstrous American thing and painted it ala Starsky & Hutch!!
He is the one dressed as a schoolgirl in your photo!!
I think the Southend pics of my Pop were either 82 or 83, not sure though!
I painted it Red in 84 so that discounts that year.
I think I painted it yellow in 81.
Blast! There goes another brain cell......

pics are courtesy of ian walker, bob rothwell & marty babb....
bloody brilliant pictures ron, now then i have a few questions which may help me in my never ending rodding research, i am slowly putting together a chelmsford club history photo file & a bob rothwell one (i have all bobs pics,) getting them in order is a major task, some of our pics may help.

whats tthe red pop next to vanilla o lay? & where/when/what show?
I think that came from Enfield way. Possibly a show in Hatfield?
where/when/what show is the prisoner at?
Prisoner pic was from a Car Show I organised in Grays, in aid of Save The Children Fund
dito bobs y
Bobs Y was at another show I held in Corringham, at my old school Gable Hall. Bob Nixons Pop photo was from the same show.
I remember one of the CDSRC guys who had a GTO "Widowmaker" was there and he did a huge burnout when leaving, but didnt realise that school playgrounds are made of soft tarmac! He offered to pay to repair the rather large hole he left!! I'm sure he also used to do handbrake turns through the traffic lights in Chelmsford, outside the burger bar owned by the guy who had the black race 69(?) Mustang.
& dito ken cooking the bacon!!
I think this pic is from Knebworth Nationals, dunno the year.
How is Roger these days?
Have the wooden pistons fallen apart yet in the 327 I sold him for his T?
Brilliant pics from Bob's box!!
He was a real gentleman
cheers for that ron, sorry dont recognise humphrey, id like to know who that other cheeky chap is, i will find out soon, i know someone who will know.
I was curious about that red pop as i didnt recognise it & it looked a good show car.
Would that grays show be the one at the ilford sports & social club on 26th of november 77??, i have the programme in bobs box downstairs?
I dont think i have any records of the corringham show, strange as i have notes on all the local shows, perhaps it werent advertised?, like to find out a bit more about that one..
The widowmaker, well ive heard of that but cant picture it offhand, but the guy you are on about is andy grimwade who ran tramps burger bar, i remember at a cdsrc show a latge b&w pic of him burning out down chelmsford high street, dont think you could do that now!, the mustang was called the tramp, i think andy went to thailand or somewhere similar?
Roger is fine, laughing as usual saw him today, i will have to ask him about those wooden pistons though!!
Cheers ron.
The Grays show was held on the local playing field, in Grays!
The "Ilford" show was held in Basildon, I used to have a pile of photos from that one but having moved home so many times, who knows where they are now? I vaguely remember interviewing Micky Kemp in Silver Surfer, for Basildon Hospital Radio, or was it just a dream?
The Corringham show was publicised in the mags and with flyers I took to other shows. We had about 30 cars there for the afternoon, no programme made though.
I was in Andy's Mustang for the Chelmsford Carnival procession one year. I spotted Valerie Singleton, judging the floats, and pointed that out to Andy, who stopped right next to her, and proceeded to wear his tyres down to the canvas!! Oh how we laughed.....
Rob Hall lived in Stanford le Hope and was about 14 when we first met him. He used to come round and pester John when he was building Wild Ride!
I also vaguely remember going to the Essex Clubs Run too.... I'm sure thats where Bob & Humphrey donned their schoolboy/girl outfits
Great pictures Ron and Mark. Love that one of Bob Nixon and John sums it up.
Yet another carrier bag reveals its secrets!!
These are a few more shots taken at the Charity Show in Grays
Bob's Y seems to be in every photo on this thread! It shows what a dedicated rodder he was.

p.s.
Check my posting on the main History thread about letting us stay on here
The young lady (in the photos) entering the tent with Bob is Liz (Ian Walkers wife to be).
Interested to hear that Mopar trundled round on a pushbike sans apehangers etc yet didnt know of Humphrey who's first regular mode of transport was his own modified pushbike with apehangers, extended forks, fat rear wheel etc long before you could buy such things. I sent some film to timetravel recently which included several Chelmsford shows and Chris (Humph) appears regularly grinning cheesily at the camera. No doubt this will appear soon on his DVD lists.
Mention of Corringham reminds me that I used to use part of the dual carraige way to Corytown as a test track for the rail. There were a number of old oil drums left by the road builders so we used to block off one carraigeway with those plus some appropriate signs, whip the car off the trailer, do a few checkout runs with adjustments and refueling between, generally there an hour or so and then trailer up and go before the feds arrived. Those were the days...
Ron the Y is now in the hands of Pete Robinson and Twinkle. They bought it off the chap Bob sold it to.
This is a brilliant thread, the pictures are literally priceless, thanks.
now then ron, you or anyone else thats paying attention may be able to help me out here, the photos below are all from the bob rothwell box (rip), i think they are all from the same show, now u have been trying to id the show for a long time now & have been told by various club members it looks a show at southchurch park, southend, i have been studying the pics above mainly looking at the house in the background of pic 1 & the wooden fence & they do look very similar?? although the cars seem to be positioned different?? Could these pics be from the grays show?? Please someone help me get this history sussed, i may not get the chance after the 24th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, anyway must get back to watching my new dvd ive just made with more than 700 pictures of shows from 75 to 85, would be nice to carry on sharing them...by for now..
please help someone must know..
heres the last one from that show, sitting in the silver surfer are (left to right) tim cook, sharon kemp, little mick kemp & rob? all are still active cdsrc members, cant remember robs surname though, tata for now.
Looks like Southchurch Park to me. With the big houses in the back gound.
Pics definitely not from the Grays Show......
We couldn't afford a marquee!
The young lady (in the photos) entering the tent with Bob is Liz (Ian Walkers wife to be).
MY GOD, THATS SOMEFIN ELSE IVE LEARNED!, I WILL BE SEEING HIM SOON, HAVE TO LET HIM SEE IT!!
Yes thats Humphrey in the schoolgirl outfit.
Now here's a poser for you,
Who remembers "The Secret Rodder's Ball"?
1st year the CDSRC put on a run, but forgot to publicise it!!!
Result: hardly anyone turned up!!
The EPF turned up on Sunday and doubled the attendance figures!
So for the next year, I renamed it and let everyone else know about it!!
The brain cells regarding that event have been long since deleted, apart from the image of Archie & Ray from The Brighton Lot, doing a human tank across the field!!
Has anyone got any photos or memories of these runs?

FUNNY YOU SHOULD SAY THAT, THATS THE FIRST ROD RUN I WENT TO AS WELL, ORGANISED BY MARTYS GANG THE EASTERN CRUISERS, IT WAS HELD AT THE CROWN PUBLIC HOUSE IN ARDLEIGH, AS YOU RIGHTLY SAY JUST OFF THE A12, 26TH OF JUNE 77 WAS THE DATE, HERES SOME PICS....
ALL I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT THESE IS THE WHITE POP IS VANILLA OLAY & THE RUBY IS AL MCNAMARAS, NO DOUBT MARTY WILL KNOW THE REST...
Cool pics of the Ardleigh run, Vanilla OLay was my Pop!!
I was rudely woken at about 8.30am on the Saturday morning by Electric Funeral revving up right next to my tent. Best alarm I've ever had!
Was that the run where we had lawnmower racing Grand prix?

GOOD, FINALLY GOT TO HUMPHREY, YES I REMEMBER THE SECRET STREET RODDERS BALLS, (OO-ERRR!) I WENT TO I THINK 2 OF EM, I HAVE A FLYER IN BOBS BOX, & A LOAD OF PICS OF MY OWN , BUT NOTHING ON FILE, I AM A LITTLE CONFUSED ON THE DATES, I HAVE A NOTE THAT THERE WAS 1 IN 82? (this is probably the lack of advertisiments one cause i cant confirm it?), & THERE WAS DEFINATELY 1 ON THE 13TH TO 15TH OF JULY 84, I KNOW THE SECOND ONE WAS HELD AT GILSTED HALL, COXTIE GREEN ROAD BRENTWOOD, THIS WAS MENTIONED IN CUSTARD CART JUNE 84.
DEFINATELY BE BACK ON THIS ONE, KEEP REMINDING ME IF I FORGET.....
I'd forgotten about you using the Coryton road as a test strip Marty!
I always used that same road as a test track whenever I did any work on my cars too!
Ranging from try outs of the MG1300 engine we put in my brother's Mini, to an all out attempt to grenade the Dolomite engine in my Pop, before I swapped it for a 2000 pinto engine. (I failed!) Just goes to show what a great little engine that was.

awesome pics, yes it was where the mower racing was, (ardleigh by the way) although i didnt see it, forgot you owned vanilla olay, ive got a pic somewhere of a wedding at broomfield church, im sure its on that pic, kens 55, goldust, bobs y etc, dunno who was getting married??
Heres the last pics from ardleigh...these were also the first photos out of my new 126 camera, my very first camera, films were expensive to get developed, always used to get them done at the chemist by the stone bridge opposite where Caters was in Chelmsford.....sorry starting to waffle....!!
That would be Andy Grimwade's wedding I believe
Thats a pic of Geoff Caves (Sit Up 'n Beg Pop) - Chief EPF macho image destroyer!
Did someone mention LAWNMOWER RACING............. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...420-083031.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...420-083044.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...420-083110.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...420-083121.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...420-083220.jpg These snaps are taken from Marty Babbs excellent cine film from that Ardleigh show
Is that one of them defuser thingies I see on the mower?

My Pop was last seen heading towards Colchester on a trailer in 2000.
It was Red with gold & silver graphics then.
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m.../922fvwred.jpg
It is still registered with DVLA but dunno if its on the road.
I have asked before but nobody has seen it....:(
Good evening viewers, here i am back on the southend thread, or sould that be essex thread which it seems to be rapidly becoming!, times running out for my postings so theres lots to get through tonight!!, bit sad this but just had to show you it, its a piece of paper with tramps burger bar chelmsford on it, its from the bob rothwell box, yes dear old bob kept everything!!
I do believe Andy who run Tramps lives in the Philippines now. Did not find a dried up burger as well ? Mark.
Yet another carrier bag reveals its secrets!!
These are a few more shots taken at the Charity Show in Grays
I ASSUME THIS IS THE PROGRAMME FROM THAT SHOW?, IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE FROM A SCHOOL EXERCISE BOOK, PRESUMABLY A SCHOOL IN HOUSE PRODUCTION!!, IVE ALSO COPIED ONE PAGE OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY, THIS ONE HAS VANILLA OLAY ON IT..HOPE YOU CAN READ THEM OK.....
IT IS OF COURSE FROM THE BOB ROTHWELL BOX....
ok here we go then, firstly we have the 1982 secret street rodders ball piece of paper which i would assume was given to everyone who was coming or just got there, (although it isnt titled as such), this is probably quite a rare piece of paper as hardly anyone turned up!, still must have kept rogers costs to a minimum!! I dont think i went to this show, but i think there were 2 others??? As i have pics from 2 other shows there.
The next piece of paper shows the pub run 82, at present i am unsure if this was part of the same event or not, but have a look anyway.....
Its all from bobs box of course.....
Stay tuned
Is that from Ilford Films factory Basildon i think Ron was there.
Whoops forgot the pics, here they are..
well i was thinking it was the grays one, but now looking in the centre it says it was on the 26th of november (yes november!) 1977, ilford sports & social club basildon & custom car show, there is also a lot of stuff about photography mentioned as well so yes ken its that one....
Stay tuned....
Moving on now, as promised heres some of my pics of one of the balls from 84, i went to this show, first pic is the no expense spared flyer/programme, cant say i can tell you much about any of those cars though, dont recognise that red 55 either??
by the way & forgive me if im teaching you to suck eggs, but i diddnt realise if you click on the picture twice it goes bigger!!
& some more,. sorry dont know much about these either, other than the Jago(?) jeep looks like it had a v8 in it, & the last pic is the awesome nick kemps Lo Lid Zephyr, which has been recently reborn in a different guise...
& some more, loved the 1st blue pop, saw it a few years ago at the essex nats, now totally different with a pointy sort of grille, in dark blue, looked totally different, you wouldnt recognise it unless you knew the reg no, which im normally pretty good at remembering, its also been pink in the later guise as well, i preffered the origional incarnation. moving on i think the silver ones the Berpop Pop??, i have just realised the yellow pop is the later incarnation of wild ride, so i had seen it in the later guise without even realising, obviously didnt recognise that plate!! cant tell you much about the other pix...
& theres more......liked that Ha viva, dont know much about it though, wonder what happened to it or if it got finished?.....& who are the guys looking at nick kemps Zephyr, dig that aron roll neck jumper & haircut, is it you?, will you admit it??, the last pic shows one of the Skinner brothers (taz fiat 126 s) Big N nasty Granada, loved that car as well, first saw it at the imperial roadsters 80/81 doo at the nothfleet football ground, gravesend, it was yellow & brown then & the front was still low, it performed one of the first burnouts i had seen together with henry hirise, it had big n nasty down the rear quarters!! Loads of the women there presumably from the imperial roadsters had white t shirts on with 'we only ***k with the morons' on them!! never did find out who the morons were or if it was true!, anyway i later saw that granada at the pod, it had been zz striped & there was a matching Fiat 126 with a turning clockwork key sticking out the back which was presumably the start of the Skinners love for the 126......got all the pix but thats another story..
& finally. The capri in the sky loved that, still about i believe, but who ar the 2 imperial roadsters guys next to it?, then theres a brace more fords, corsairs look nice rodded, not that you see that many...., moving onto the cop car in the distance you can just make out, yes you guessed it bob-rocky-bullet hole bob-rothwells model y, the man & the car, both british hot rod legends, hopefully we will see that y again in not to many years time.......
Thats all from this show folks...i have a few more of what i think was a later ball, if I find them b4 my posting pleasures are closed off......
You've done it again Mopar!!!
Such brilliant pics keep coming out!!
This one I believe is of Ken Johnson's Anglia, probably the only Rod Run he ever went to!
(Just checked and its not Ken's car!! His had a chrome grille and running boards)
I bought my Pop from him in 1977, and there it is on the right!
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...kensanglia.jpg
Also, to the left is my '66 Beetle, a nice looking car, but something went wrong with the steering and I could only turn left!
At the back, (I might be wrong), but I think that is Bob Rothwell's tea making ensemble.
And lastly, there's some miserable sod with a can of beer in his hand in the photo too.......
Have you got any of the little square stickers I printed with the Gumby image?
The two Pops at the top of the page are from Bristol, Mike Bull's Coupe?
Captain Scarlet's Pop in there too. (Silver and Red)
The Hillman Husky was from manchester way I think
I think the guy in the brown leather jacket looking at the engine is Stan Kiddle. 604 FMY Dark Maroon Pop, another EPF man!
His wife, Helen ran a really lovely Classic Capri too. I looked on the Capri thread but couldnt see it shown.
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...stankiddle.jpg

WELL I JUST THOUGHT ID DEDICATE MY WHOLE EVENING TO YOU, & THATS WHAT I CAME UP WITH, & WOTS THE HELLS A GUMBY!! SORRY IM AN ESSEX BOY!!
I MAY FIND THE OTHERS LATER, THE CLOCK IS TICKING THOUGH......
The Purple Pop in post 391 was Merv Barnett's the Silver and red one was (is) Ian Armstrong's, the Husky was Chris Hayes' in its first incarnation.
