I paid £350 for it so not that expensive? It's a Curries one from Summit. It might actually be good news if it is a poorer quality one as at least that means I can get a stronger one next.
From what you say it might be better to bite the bullet & pay for a whole upgraded pumpkin then. I really don't want to break another one.
Strange bearings have seals both sides of the bearing Mark, they are sealed bearings, the diff oil doesn't lubricate the axle bearings.Quote:

The reason I referred to it as a posi is because that's what people know them as, steve is correct the proper name is traction lock but both the Posi traction & Traction lock are clutch LSD's, sorry for any confusion
I'm only basing this on what you've said about the launch but your car seems to hit too hard even with a mild engine. That put's unbelievable stress on the driveline and will seek out the weakest link. As Steve says a Daytona is a great move and I would be buying well named products after a good study of alternative diff arrangements, especially if you plan to make more serious horsepower in the future.
Steve (Lang) - Strange bearings are open race?? outer fits in axle tube and inner on the shaft with the wedding band and seal. I'll post photos later.
I'm hoping you are right about the breakage = cheap rear end.
Steve (Hale) - not sure about the hard launch, 3000 converter roughly equals 2400 with the weight of the car. It normally squeals the tyres for half a second then digs in and goes so a bit of slippage there?
The only odd thing it does - when trying to do a burnout (only tried 3 times - twice to check changes) is it wants to do donuts instead - axle is straight as I plumblined all the chassis & suspension front & rear to check - it happens more if I swap tyres over so might be a cast on the tyres (local drag racer thinks this might be the cause). It launches & drives dead straight otherwise. The thing is when I've tried this I backed off when it reached 90 degrees (which was quick) and car stopped dead & stalled engine - I think this probably put massive shock through the planetaries? Could well be the cause?
I think I will have to spend more & get something a lot stronger next anyway!

Had an interesting chat with Andy Robinson tonight, put my mind at rest on a couple of points. Pozi diff is only good for around 300 hp so my current one was not strong enough. The other point was its completely normal for car to spin or donut the way I was trying to burn out, I've now been told how to do it properly, lol so at least I know nothing is set up incorrectly.
He thinks the the bearings & crown/pinion should be re-usable (hopefully) but agrees that the Daytona housing is a very good idea. (annoyingly the original pumpkin I sold had a Daytona housing :no: but I did not realise).
He said 31 spline would be ideal but understood that I already had the Strange shafts so it's a bit of a compromise - hindsight is a wonderful thing :whistle: with the knowledge I have now I would have ordered the correct parts but at the time I did not know so just assumed a "Curries" diff was a top notch item.
Good to hear about your 28 spline/10 sec car Steve, reassuring to know though mine wont ever be that quick.
They are taper bearings, I forgot you had the tapered bearings, don't see them very often now, your case is a stock Ford, heres a pic of the stronger case, I appreciate what Andy said about 28 spline shafts but both I and Brian ran 500 brake through 28 spline on 18.5 Mickeys and neither of us ever had shaft problems although I was running a Detroit Locker, You could fit a Spool but it might be a bit twitchy on the road in such a short wheelbase car, i'm just about to take my spool out of the willys as i've built up a aluminium carrier with a DetroitTrueTrac, they really are good for a street & strip car and only a tenner more than a LSD

how much for the one in your photo? is it a bolt in job or does it need gears?
Spool is a no-no as my broken one locked up as a spool and it was not nice, really heavy steering and did not want to turn corners without fighting the steering - apart from howling the tyres round corners as well.
If you intend a bit of track action no it's not, I've got the stronger nodular iron case £240 or the aluminium cases £275 in stock here Mark, Daytona supports are £70Quote:

I CNC routed a rear window surround the other day from 7mm birch ply, some sanding & paint & it will look original. If others want one I would need a good template on paper of an unchopped one, but then could cut them out easily.

Also picked up my new diff today from Langy's Rod Shop - built by Paul at Southern Axles in Watford, both giving sterling service - Paul built the diff in half a day for me before he went off on hols just so my 84 year old dad could have a ride in the car this weekend. Steve paid the bill for me & collected it so I could pick it up from him.
It turns out my original LSD wasn't! it was a std open diff, which explains why it broke I guess.

Just another challenge to overcome Brizey, not insurmountable from what I have read so far. Got my new VIN no from DVLA today with confirmation of a Q plate. The challenge begins....
On the plus side my new gears for the gearbox speedo drive arrived from America today - 4 days after ordering so great service from Roger at http://www.speedometersolutions.com

Thanks Mike, took my 84 year old Dad out in it yesterday on a private circuit near me. Diff all worked fine - left a nice '11' on pull away :D
The new gears in the gearbox speedo drive work perfectly - sat nav said 58 - speedo said 60 -so bang on there, another job ticked off.
