Much better build than the Hurst rip off.

Got the new solenoid in place after a lot of cursing and skinned fingers. It mounted on the chassis rail under the drivers seat.
It was easy t put in originally but now has the exhaust sitting just below it so access is tight.
Eventually the exhausts will move to side pipes on the outside of the chassis.

Had a busy couple of days in the garage.
Drivers side seat mounts bolted back in. These are bolted through the chassis members then the seat runners bolt to them. Nice and solid.
Shifter and handbrake lever back in.
Harness back in.

You can see the parachute release lever by the shifter.

put 20 litres of super in the tank and she fired up!
Need to check the timing and mixture next but to damn hot at the moment to be running the monster inside.
Got some more bits for stripping and coating....when its cooler.

The quality of the chrome on the wheelie bars is appalling so satin black it is. The front fender mounts also need to be redone in satin black.

More done today.
Started her up after a couple of try's.
Have got a loud clatter where the exhaust is banging on the chassis! This will be cured with the side pipes later this year.

Attachment 56364
Then found out I'd forgotten to fix the rocker covers on...oil down both sides of the engine all over the floor.
At least I know the oil is reaching the rockers OK, have been worried about this since I buttoned it all up.

Attachment 56365
Topped up trans fluid with another 6 pints until full with engine running.
Tried R 1 2 & 3, the wheels actually turn, result.
Next problem the new yoke on the diff hits the diagonal link, so will have to move the LH bracket down on the chassis mount.

Attachment 56366
Now she was warmed up thought I'd check the timing.
Bu**er can't see the timing marks. Had to remove the alternator to get to them.
Fired her up again pulled the trigger on the timing light marks on the balancer are showing 270 degrees???
Removed all the plugs turned her over by hand. Definitely got TDC on the compression stroke, distributor is in right with the rotor arm pointing to where 1 should be.
Replaced all the plugs etc. fired up first press of the button, ticks over OK at about 650/700rpm.
Tried the light again, still shows 270ish degrees.
Any one got any ideas? http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima.../icon_beuj.gif

Just found a mention of dial back lights and MSD ignitions having issues...maybe that's the problem.
Will investigate further.
In the meantime I've stripped apart the back end again and moved the lower 4 link arms down for more clearance for the yoke, then re-assembled it all again.
Where did the day go http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...icon_crazy.gif

Been away for a few days. On my return this was waiting for me http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/tup.gif
Old school inductive timing light, no bells or whistles, just smells of old oil.

Attached and started up the engine, pointed at the timing marker and surprise, surprise it was reading 20 degrees BTDC.
Adjusted back to 14 degrees and now starts and idles perfectly, result!
First time out of the garage since August 2017!!!

A bit more powder coating done.
The wheel cradles were originally cheap chrome that rusted through, so blasted and coated satin black.

I did coat the parachute mount but the powder coating is fractionally thicker than the paint so now the mount won't fit in the hole http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...icon_angry.gif
Will have to wet sand the mount and inside of the mounting tube to gain clearance.
Two steps forward, one step back....

Whilst building the car I thought wouldn't it be useful to add some daylight running lights. I built a dual bracket for the DLR's and indicators.
I was happy with the way it looked, the indicators worked fine but the DLR's flicker badly, so out they come.
http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...b9a175665a.jpg
I can't leave the bracket as is so....
Made a pair of new brackets out of some scrap steel sheet, powder coated of course.

(07/08/22)
First run out on Friday evening. Got to the end of the drive and found the brake lights were on constantly, back in the garage.
After some fetteling of the brake all works OK. Was just a bit lazy on its return.
Saturday afternoon back out and up to Tesco's for some fuel.
I'd forgotten how loud bumpy and obnoxious the car was to drive.
Need both windows open, ear plugs and can't see anything to the side or rear even with the new mirrors!
FUN, FUN, FUN http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/tup.gif
Got back from the fuel trip in one piece.
Need to have a look at the engine as its running on when the ignition is switched off.
The plugs look very hot.
Back in the garage......
-
(07/08/22)
Plugs out all eight are an identical colour. According to pics on the web they are normal, happy days.
http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...fa05d82536.jpg
Now got to look else where for the running on problem.
On the outward trip the engine switched off fine. It was after the home leg it ran on.
Interweb says could be the momentum of the engine still turning drawing fuel through the carbs and "dieseling".
I'm not sure how to check this.
I don't want to cause engine damage, advice is to switch of ignition in PARK this will stall the engine.
Fuel injected cars wont do it its a carb thing.

(08/08/22)
Took it out for the unofficial MOT this morning.
From start, the temperature goes up to 210F, then the fan kicks in and it drops to 180F.
The engine oil temp is just over 70C (should have got a F gauge but didn't notice when buying!)
Have ordered a set of colder plugs, we'll see what difference that makes.
Seemed better this morning.
The garage found a few small leaks.
One of the headlights is wired up so beam is dip.
Little bit of adjustment needed on the hand brake.
The worst part is front brakes low efficiency!!! The wheels don't lock up when you stand on the pedal.
Back in the garage....
-
(09/08/22)
Have had a chat with some car builder friends and it looks like the ratio of the pedal is to small so not getting enough push on the M/C.
The current pedal that I made was using exactly the same dimensions as the original (so it looks like the car has had crap brakes since it was originally built!!!)
I can't lengthen the pedal from the floor due to clearance problems so I've got to raise the pushrod mounting point under the floor.
The current ratio is 3.3 I need to achieve 4.5 to 5.
Failing that the M/C can be swapped out for one with a smaller bore.
There's no adjustment to the front callipers just a proportioning valve to the back callipers.
-
(12/08/22)
Progress report.
Fitted cooler plugs to the motor.
Sorted out the few minor leaks.
I've extended the master cylinder pushrod 1/2" to give more pedal travel.
Bled the brakes again, after pumping half a litre of new fluid through to the front near side calliper there was a massive amount of bubbles suddenly coming through!
Kept pumping and pure fluid now.
Looks like I had a big old air lock in the circuit somewhere.
Checked the vac pump was working, its pulling 16 inches on the gauge.
The one way valve into the servo is all good and the pedal is now solid.
Hope this may be the end of brake problems for a while.
I will need to look at pedal ratios in the future.
Just got to sort out why the speedos not working now, looks like a power problem.

(14/08/22) Got there in the end....
Great meeting up Phil, car is looking great, and all the people I spoke to who had seen it really liked it and appreciated the work put in.
(Missing Picture)
For the people on here, proof the big man made it.

Engine was running a little hot but the fan brought it back in range.
The ride home was uneventful until I got close to home when the steering wheel started shaking!
You were right about the front wheel alignment!!! 2 knackerd front tyres being the result.
I did say I needed to replace them but now its 'must' replace them.
She wont be going out again until sorted http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...lies/shake.gif

At the moment the car has 155xR15 on the front.
These are now useless as they are all scrubbed out on the outside edge.
I've found a company called Blockley Tyres who do a 165xVR15 and I am waiting for a pair to arrive.
In the mean time I've set up my alignment strings. They run perfectly parallel to the hubs ignore the floor tiles its the camera angle.
http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...4d392b0aee.jpg
http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...4d392b0ac7.jpg
The rear wheels are in perfect alignment, which is good http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/tup.gif
The fronts however were going in different directions!!!
Once the steering wheel had been centred and held level with a couple of ratchet straps front wheel measurements were taken.
http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...761dee71a3.jpg
Looks like the adapters I had made a few years back have caused the problem.
The car arrived with open spherical joints and bolts on the tie rod ends.
I thought I'd change them over to proper Ford tie rod ends to match the hubs (Granada II).
The steering rack was eventually found to be from a Hillman Avenger so obviously the threads didn't match.
I had an adaptor made, which worked well but I didn't do any proper alignment at the time.
Years later guess what....
I've had to cut 8mm off each of the threaded end of the rack tie rods, now I have enough adjustment to get things right.
Just got to make up a couple of turntable plates from some steel sheet and a dollop of grease.
Just keep going....

Onward...
Got the strings back out and had a measure up.
I now have 1.25mm toe in each side = 2.5mm total.
The steel plates for the turntables went out the window when I found out it would cost me almost £50 for the four!!!
Plastic chopping boards came to the rescue @£2.00 each http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/tup.gif
Applied a good squirt of grease between them, worked a treat.

Attachment 56339
Quick camber check and the wheels have what equates to 1.00mm negative camber.
This needs to be a fraction more but the process means I would have to take the front suspension apart again (It can wait until winter).

The guy in the garage said he had never seen a tyre poke its steel belting straight out the side wall before.
There's no wear, the steel threads have just poked through.

Took it out for a spin to the A602's show today and lost gear selection! Had to come all the way home in 2nd http://www.torquedup.co.uk/forum/ima...ilies/slap.gif
Was my fault the gear selector cable had come loose at the trans end.
Spent a while under the car re configuring the mounting point, almost got it sorted now....
Then thought...while I'm down here lets have a look at the side pipes.

Have asked Paul at Whengparts to cut me a pair of flanges from S/S and have the 4" collector exit tube now.
My stainless welding would not be up to standard for an exhaust so looking around still.
