Did you ever go to the cruise.
Yes but all I remember is Wonderland raceway!
sorry to busy being amazed at women in t shirts, mini skirts and stockings walking around on the sea front in freezing cold weather in the middle of winter to take photos... was a great cruise in its day!
anyone go to the seven kings (ilford) meets just down from customvile
spoke before about starting a meet back down southend not a bad run if weathers good and hot doughnuts at the three sheels
adrian
I used to go but don't have photos as I was driving! :D
Spirit of the Fifties were there at least once, though judging from the lack of black and gold shirts we were still Uxbridge Valley when this picture was made.

I think this picture came from Alphabet Alex, if so I am sure he has many more.
That biulding is still there with the Wonderland name.Ive got an old magazine called Model cars, theres a 2 page add in there with mention of a 24 hour race with £300 prize money which was proberly a lot back then.
Thanks Mopar, there the first pics ive ever seen of the cruise
more to come, promise.
chears mopar,Ken Robbins said you had some pics, hope you dont mind, would be great to see them.
Ken was saying that the Chelmsford Drag n street Rod club used to hand out flyers at the cruise for a showing of a Hot Rod film at a Cinema in Chelmsford after the cruise!
Yes I was there every month through 74-77 I think in my '62 Capri - Blue with orange flames, then afterwards black.
Used to run down with the North Kent Roadsters and meet up with the Easten Cruiser boys down there.
We'd meet up at Americar in Basildon as I remember.
Don't think I have any photos but I'll have a dig
Dave
when my mates subaru was on the road we used to drive down there last year quite reguarly....theres sill a yellow modle Y with orange outlined flames choped roof.... anyone know it? seen it every time ive been there
I used to frequent the Southend cruise in a jacked up blue mk1 Cortina 'Street legal'
stopped when the old bill came down heavy one month with their machanics and were carrying out Mot style inspections on loads of our modified cars in the lay by on the sea front, trolley jacks, axle stands, lead lights, clipboards etc.
We were advised to stop turning up, seemed like a good idea,
Eastern Cruisers were meeting at Aquatels at the time in Basildon, its still there but hidden behind bas vegas
Wasnt the seven kings meet in the long thin car park next to the railway between the station and The Kings Pub ?
Used to go there on way back from Chelsea
What was the name of the stretch of rod in Beckton where we used to race.... near harpies ???
Need to see a copy of that mart please!! Im slowly doing a chelmsford drag n street rod club history dvd, hopefully be done one day !!
yes they hired out the local pavillion, they showed 2 lane blacktop on the 9th of october 76 & american graffiti on the 12th of november, both the second staurdays of the month.
This was just as i was getting into rodding, hence i didnt know anything about it, wish i did, apparantly (however you spell it!) chelmsford was bumper to bumper hot rods & rodders had to be turned away as the pavillion was full to capacity.
Check out the 2 origional flyers i just happen to have in stock!, probably designed & drawn by the late bob rothwell, not sure though.
Anyway, thanks to you i have just spent about 3 hours scanning in some old southend negatives they all hail from about 86, some of them are pretty crud as i was getting to grips with my 110 camera, and you had to pay for all the pics then, didnt you!.......more to come, enjoy........
by the way i remember the mk4 or 5 cortina in the previous picture getting pulled up by the ole bill, they were all over the blower like a rash, i think he got a ticket for no belt cover!, heres some more pics, THE YELLOW PRIMERED MK1 CORTINA WAS A ROOFCHOPPED VAN & THE FORDSON OR THAMES VANS REG WAS MSV 906, MY CAMERA DIDNT SEEM TO LIKE TAKING NUMBER PLATES!, MORE SOON...
by the way the last lot of photos starting from the wheely barred oxford & these ones are all from the 12th of april 1986, discotrucker was also there (les cousins?) & so was alan lamberts? blue escort van, pictures are to crud to print. check out the mk2 with the hiked jag back end, i think these should be the next fashion to come back, with wheely bars of course!! thats all for now, will have a look to see if i have any more soon, cheers.
great pics Mopar, thanks for the time putting them on here, much appreciated.Just dont no why i dident take pics there??
i guess thats Kens 55 on the flyer.
The steve Baines Capri was in the readers cars of Street Machine how it is in that pic.Is that the same capri that he had with like a pick up back, tube front and done in red?think it had a Rover init?
I see the Discotrucker for sale many years ago not far from Rayliegh/Thundersly,dont no who owned it then.
The blue Escort van you mentioned was that the one with V6 and wide archs all round, used to go down the Weir tuesday meet.
That yellow Minor seams to ring a bell, dident Wilf Stacey have one like that???may be not.
yes you are very right on the capri dont know about tube front but it did get pick upped & red, not gettinhg confused with the blue/white sky high one r u?
right on the blue van as well, i think the guys name was alan larcom, i will have to check, spose you will want to see the weir pics next...
must get to work!!
Yes that's where Americar was - memory failed me as usual. Had it in my head it was near Basildon
Funny enough I took the Rat to Southend Cruise last year one Saturday. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the more up to date cars and appreciated them (although of course, not really my thing) but I had a throng of people around my car, probably wondering what I was doing there and I guess a lot of the youngsters wondering what the hell it was!
However as I say a good night was had and I'll no doubt pop along again this year sometime.
Dave
I showed my beetle at Southend custom car show in 79,remember it was near the airport ?,any one remember that? then the following year doing the cruise in Ron France's chevelle (STITCH)with Bob1 and mr Butterworth, deary me,would either of you 2 care/dare totake up the story?
1979 was probably the year I attended the most if not all Southend Cruises
I remember a Celica covered in rough texture artex and painted yellow, and a Mk 2 Cortina
covered in Pink fur  that was owned by a chap who ran a carpet shop.
Most were tuned family saloons like my Mk2 Cortina GT with a stage two cam from performance unlimited , DIY head porting and a set of cut down 2.0 pinto jets from prices in leigh.
hi i think the yellow moggy was jay emerys first
rod we used to go all the time but not got any pictures
mick
must have been this show then, notice the silver beetle in the background on picture 2, i also remember a green one with i think a sunvisor etc on it?, think ive got picks of this at the following sos shows.
Also shown of course is small fry, richie kings f type victor, which went out in a blaze of glory banger racing!!, and andy fenns that mini & no it was not rear wheel drive!!, great 70s rods at their best!!
Great pics Mopar!
I put my pics of the show on the old NSRA site, will put em back on here when i sort scanner.
I used to cycle down there on the friday afternoon to see the cars turning up,then go down Sunday, then wait to the end to see some of them blast up the road!
That biulding ended up being "Roller City" so end of shows
Was you there when John Dodds Merlin was on show outside.
El richies"Phenix"i took a pic of over in Chelmsford then showed it to Richard down at German Kar company?(think it was called),he wanted a copy of the pic, then not long after i found out the F-type had been banger raced. What a waste!!!
Yeh yeh got pictures of dodds rolls with the union jack over the grill at the southend show,(it was inside in my pics) no pics to hand though, thousands not on computer yet! Yeh dead shame about the f type, it was the german car company on the leigh road where they sell all the motors along the road, cheers 4 now.
Yes Mark thats my silver beetle, was a good show, but i remember we had to camp right at the side of the road,a fast road as well, still remember laying there expecting to get splattered any minute !

This MK 2 was all white once then white and red, first time i see it was in a gararge on the A13 Bread and Cheese Hill, think it was then called "white Lemon"??.The gararge used to have old 60s yanks round the back and over the fence.

Is that big rigs old truck the Hulk before it was painted white:confused: it could be but looks a little smaller
i went to 79 (21-23 sept), 80 (30-31 aug), 81 (17-20 apr), i think i also went to one around 83 ish, love to get the exact date, i must have missed at least 1 as i dont recognise all those cars, i will have to sort out some of the programmes, pics etc, meantime heres some more cruise pics fom the 12th of july 86, enjoy.........
Thats it-Thorneycroft Anter,i was talking to a guy last year at a show not far from Colchester,he had one there,he seamed to think the "hulk" was sold from Kirbys and someone else broke it???.The one i see at Colchester had petrol engine done one to the gallon, and aparently you need to give somekind of prior warning that you are going to use it??? on the road because of the width of it.
The Hulk was featured in Custom car, theres a pic of it going down Rayliegh highstreet.
I'm in the passenger seat of the chopped, white Mk2 Cortina [second from right, post 44], I owned it a couple of years ago, ET on here as it now. 1986 eh, ****, I'm old.
HERS ANOTHER ONE (& MORE) of the mk2, i saw this car at the arena essex swap meet, 2006 i think, it was for sale at £1.500, (again i think?)
hi mopar thats my mk 2 consul got hit by a volvo at the zoo doo
and taking to bits for spares for other cars as i said early on this thread
wish i still had it great car
cheers mick
Strangely enough the first showing of American Graffiti, at a cinema in Chelmsford was an evening I mentioned in my intro (hi all!). There were rods and customs parked all over the streets around the Cinema. It was the koolest way to enjoy your first viewing of the film. A certain Model Y had snagged pride of place as I recall.
Hi ya Mick, good to here from ya.Dident realise you had that MK2,i seam to remember that one at the Weir many moons ago(or am i getting mixed up with another one?)It was round about the time the street racin was going on at the island, there were a few Mk2s that used to get there-Steve Dodds blue one,"ford Fever"(when the small block was in and the rear axle was wider and the car was higher out back-thats how a preferd it!)
no,i dont no why!Its so frustrating thinking about it now.
Ive got a few af the weir somewhere.
That truck pic further back may of been a MACK?

till late racing then to the blinking owl cafe
the chrome smoothies and the built v6 on the consul
came of bob nixons blue pop

mick

i went to the island strip many times but dident no they went to the Blinking Owl
Also went to Stock Road!
Mopar(Cruise pics) the Reliant 4 wheeler was Bob Mortons?had a 3-5 Rover and the wide rear archs came of a Land Rover.Bob had a white Morris Minor prior to that also Rover powered, and a stock width jag irs out back still in its cage.
hi steve yeah used to go to stock rd
rob had a opel manta as well didnt he
had a tyre place near the airport i think
was a long time ago
we used to meet wilf and his lot along the sea front
went down there last year for a look
all we see was a yellow model y
its the one that has a trailor with a pedel car on it
at the nats
mick
Heres some more piccys, these are from the 8th of november 86. The amc was stuart eckersleys, i used to knock about with him a bit, it always had a saxophone on the rear seat, it was apparently wrote off when a farmer in his tractor pulled out in front of him!, then we have wilf staceys zephyr before being written, then a ragtop pontiac (i think!) and a mk2 being 2 doored, what did that end up as?, more to come, oh by the way why do my pictures all come out little??
hi mopar the 2doored mk 2 is still about
it having a 460 ford put in guys name is paul
is one of the erics
mick
From memory, it was advertised in, and organised by CC. But what state their 1973 'archive' would be like... who knows... especially as it would have transfered buildings etc. (Dingwall Ave at the time...)
But I would love to think that some pics survived... Any of the Chelmsford Drag and Hot Rod Club Guys likely to have any?
Anyone else see Grafitti there? Anyone know the cinema? was it the Pavillion? I know it became Zeus nightclub...
There was a 455 with nos Trans Am at Stock road, left tyre marks as far as the eye could see against the Reliant.
Yes remember the white n stripes Manta at North Weald, with small block.I think the tyre place was right down the far end of the road that the indoor car show was on.
Mopar think Wilfs MK2 might not have been out that long when you took that pic.I see the car in grey primer waiting for the orenge to be added.
hi, the film events were definately organised by the chelmsford club & not custom car, i dont think there was ever a mention of it in any of the mags as i have recently been through every issue of hot car & custom car from no1 to mid 77 with a fine tooth comb looking for chelmsford related stuff, if it was there im sure i would have found it, however please prove me wrong if you can! I am in contact with ken robbins trying to find out a bit more, i know that flyers were given out at the southend cruise and all the cars drove directly from it to the showing & a load of people did not get in, not enough room!
Further back on this thread there are some origional flyers that i posted regarding this, well worth a look.
I dont know of anyone in the club who has any pics but i will try & pursue it at the next meeting, cheers.
Been in touch with ken he has no photos so as i say i will pursue it with some of the other ole timer club members (sorry ken love u lots really)
ive been through Bob Rothwells club archive box again & i have found some more stuff on the films as shown in the pics, (i have aleady shown 2 of them further up the thread), i think bob actually drew these up, it looks like they are all the second saturday of the month & if you check out the grafitti ones one is the 12th of november & the other one the 13th, so i would guess that bob spent an hour designing one of them, sat back all chuffed then noticed he had put the saturday date down wrong, so he had to start all over again & used a different drawing, good ole bob, we miss you, enjoy...............
cant remember the yellow mk2 offhand, got any pics?, i never saw wilfs mk2 when it was blue, at least i dont think i did, who knows!
Heres some more pics from the 8th of november 86, wilfs mk2, stuart eckersleys amc, last i knew of stuart he was running a 37 ford ragtop races it a lot in flathead meltdowns etc, then we have a vauxhall wyvern i think, then a mk2 lotus (or copy?) (notice the ghostl passenger hanging out the window!) then wilfs mk2 again....., one more pic from this night to go..........
hi mark do you go to there club mets at horse and groom pub
as roger said to me at the nats last year to go there but wot nights it on

used to go there about three years ago
did you go to southend cruise in one of your mk 2 cortinas
steve the yellow mk 2 your on about is pauls
was white and red had a 302 in it
was a eric car
how did you get bobs photobox mark
cheers mick
hi, yes its every 2nd & 4th monday each month, used to go to southend in my mk3 cortina then i got the mk2, pics attatched of how it was more or less when i got it for £35 & how it ended up, it was then sold, nicked the next day, (from southend!) then found stripped 6 months later!! Still not sure on that yellow mk2?? Are you talking cortina or consul? Im sorting out all bobs old rodding pics and other stuff, quite a task, i am dooing a bob rothwell history cd, it is a major task that is taking forever!!, cheers.
As a local I'm really enjoying this thread. Most of the stuff mentioned is before my time, but I can remember my Dad taking me to the show at the airport as a nipper, must heve been around '79 or '80. I can remember being very impressed with the 'Prisoner' T Bucket, although I didn't have a clue what it was at the time.
What is it with this area and 2 doored Mk 2's ? I looked at the yellow Consul last year with a view to buying it, and obviously Wilf's car is still about and Ford Fever is still local. Are there any more still around?
hi mark kens right didnt now pauls last name
but now his still got the mk 2
mick
First time i ever new about the weir,i was with some mates in that Petrol station that used to be over the road, there was a burger bar near by what we used to go to near where Whicks is now, then we heard what sounded like thunder and over the road was a line of MK 2 street racers leaving the car park, maybe to go to the island?which i dident no about then.
Wilfs MK2 was blue when he first bought it,had Rover and auto, raised up rear complete with Spring Assisters, small rear arch extentions,no exhausts and i think chrome 5 spokes.Wilf never used the car on the road like this.Richard King done the chop and i think the Transit rear arch work.
heres a pic which couldant have been long after the car came out as the Chopped down trim round some of the windows wasant back on.
Thats Wilfs mate "Spanner"in the pic he who had a 390 powered Galaxie wagon and later a Orenge 360 powered Chalenger.I remember the Galaxie smokin a tyre. round the Weir rounderbout.
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...yer/TMP102.jpg

This yellow 351ci Cougar was pictured in a Street Machine give away poster driving along a duel carrigway in Basildon along with the Camaro next to it which was his brothers.Dave Kelly later bought the Cougar and had it Pro streeted.
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...yer/TMP139.jpg
This Pop i see outside the Foresters pub one cruise night and thats Dave Kellys old BMW with small block Chevy power that used to be white and used to go to the cruise and indoor show.
