Is that a sweet looking Hemi I spy. Got your work cut out on that one Neil, and I suppose you'll finish it before Christmas [emoji23][emoji23]

sorry tim, just seen your reply mate. yes a little 2.5 daimler hemi with a blower manifold drilled for a 4 barrel that has a 2x2 barrel adapter with a pair of 94's on it. it came from merv barnett's old 32 roadster i'm told.
neil.
i sold the daimler hemi and boxes today, so it looks like i'll be using the holden v8 and manual box i have in stock instead. today anyway, lol.
also i just bought an fx4 black cab to be the doner for the other (48) chevy cab and panels i bought a couple of weeks ago. that one'll be a wooden dropside truck, sort of hillbilly (walton's) style.
oh, and i swapped the fibreglass model A bed sides and tailgate that came with the truck for a pair of cycle fenders and a pair of bobbed model A rear fenders. i'll make a steel bed box so it's more practical.
neil.
All go then Neil, shame the Daimler's gone.

Aye, don't I just!!
I was talking to someone recently who has one, he's got a good few grand invested in it, nice looking but a bit of a dear hobby.

when i had the deal i looked at the daimler engine and box as an asset more than what i'd be using in the build. about half the money from it's sale bought the doner car taxi for the other truck cab. i still don't know what this one will end up with, i've got the option to buy a cheap (by today's standards) ford 2.0 pinto and box which would make it daily driver affordable to run. i'd have to then make a hood and sides but that's only metal right?
neil.
Makes good sense Neil, as does the pinto motor if your looking for daily economy mate. Not hard to get a fair load of bhp out of them as well. Yeah it's only metal. [emoji106]

this is now for sale, offers around £3500. comes with a holden v8 253 cu in and 4 speed box as daimler engine and box sold.

So what's the plan now then Neil?
Cheers Tim W

sell it all and get summat that's either a driver or very close to it mate. a running (if poss') restification if you like.

Good luck Neil.

well i've not sold it, i've swapped it with a 2 door 58 nash rambler. something completely different, lol.

here's the car, it should be with me in the next week to ten days. it has a flattie six that either 3.0 or 3.2 with an auto box and o/d. the plan is run it as is this year and swap in the holden v8 and manual box etc over next winter. it's a real quirky thing but i like that.
neil.
Looks good Neil, aye agree quirky but in a good way.

cheers all, just tweaked the thread title to suit.
it'll be slow going, i finally got my mri scan results today and i've got 2 prolapsed ('slipped' to you and me) discs pressing on nerves so that explains the back pain i have every day
getting old sucks!!!
neil.
Good luck with both the Nash and your back Neil, I'm assuming they can do something for the discs?

Good luck Neil.

Think long and hard before having any surgery ( if offered) . MYback is shagged top to bottom but the biggest issue is high up in my neck. I'm on amber alert ,if it gets worse I have no option but to have surgery a sit WILL paralyse me if left untreated , however the op could also paralyse me, some'choice' eh .CBDoil is very good for relieving pain and inflamation. PM me if you want details , virtually everyone I've recommended it to has had positive outcomes inc afew on here.
thanks kev, i'll see what the doc' says on monday. i've only had info' from the physiotherapist so far and that's only what his side of things means for me. the doc' may have other news, oh joy.
neil.
the doc was very frank with me, his words were ''you're ****ed, you won't ever be doing the physical manual work you've always done''. although i appreciate the candor, it's the first time someone i should take notice of has told me straight what i guess i've known for a while. surgery isn't an option for the issues i have so he's referring me to a pain management clinic and for more physio' which can build up the surrounding muscles to take the weight off of the knackered bits. so more or less put up with it and keep taking the pain killers of which he also prescribed some stronger ones. happy days....
on a brighter note i just bought a set of late bullitt mustang wheels and tyres for the nash, 18x9's and 18x10's so it looks like it'll be going sort of pro touring style. i've not done that yet but i like the look.
neil.
Getting old... Good luck Neil.
Wheels sound good.
Cheers Tim W
Sent from my G3121 using NSRA mobile app
this is what the wheels look like, the tyres are 275 and 295 so the little nash will have plenty of grip. also they are easy to keep clean compared to some styles of wheel, important if you don't like cleaning cars.

Very nice Neil. Should suit it well mate. [emoji106]

fun with the logbook for the nash. the guy i got it from was going to forward the v5c to me once registration was completed and he got it from the dvla. he had a letter today saying he had to get it inspected, doh! so he called the company that do the inspections for dvla and asked what should he do as he'd sold the car. their reply was we don't mind where it is but you have to arrange the inspection with us as you are who dvla is dealing with to register the car. so i've let him know when i'm not available (doc's appointments, physio etc) and i'm waiting for a call back with a date for them to come and have a look at it. it's all completely stock still so absolutely no issues, it's just an unexpected delay. oh well.
neil.
Good job you're not half way through a chop & channel Neil [emoji23] Good luck.

ok, so i thought i'd have a go at firing the flatty today. first thing was remove the radiator which was held in with baling wire, quick release with side cutters. then a socket on the crank nut and bu66er it's stuck. so a bigger bar and rock it back and forth and it turns. after a few complete turns there's only a slight 'tight' spot so moving on. next pull the plugs and wd40 in the bores while i cleaned the points and fitted a replacement coil and condenser as the points were burned bad. cleaned and gapped the points and pinch a plug lead from the holden engine and time to check for a spark. seems to dead short when the starter is 'activated' with a screwdriver so off with the starter. the solenoid was locked solid so that took a while to get apart and sand the piston so it's free. the brushes looked good and it all appeared to work off my battery booster so i refitted it. it only spins if the booster is on 24 volts and only at any sensible speed if the plugs are out. also i can feel a decent puff of air from cylinders 1,2 and 3 plug holes when it's turning but nothing at all from 4,5 and 6.
so to summarise...... plan 'a' of running the flatty this summer is failing dismally so far. i guess i'd have at least £200 in a starter plus gaskets to see what valves are stuck open losing compression etc etc and that's all money i could use for parts that will go with the proper build. so it seems like a non starter (excuse the pun). so i'll get the registration done and pull it all apart going straight to plan 'b'. i bought a new lhd cortina steering rack at the swapmeet as it's the right sort of width. i'll probably make tubular 'a' arms and a new crossmember for the front and a diagonal 4 link for the explorer axle at the back with coilovers all round.
as always the plan is flexible and dependant on money and what parts present themselves along the way, lol.
neil.
That's a shame Neil, t'was a good plan A mate, still I dare say plan B will yield a good result mate. [emoji106]
Cheers Tim W
Sent from my G3121 using NSRA mobile app
cheers tim. yes, currently plan 'b' is sort the suspension all round and initially i'm going with the 2.0 pinto and manual box. i won't have to cut the bulkhead or inner wings so it's possible (my back allowing ) it can be on the road this year. i'm finally collecting the pinto and 2 gearboxes saturday morning (i bought them last year, lol) so after the inspection it's all systems go.
neil.
Nice one mate, just need to get the inspection and registration out of the way. [emoji106]

Sounds like your having a lot of 'Fun' with the Nash. My boy's got similar back grief he is now having hydrotherapy it seems to be helping. Good luck with the inspection.
G
luckily we're off to gt yarmouth next week otherwise i'd be wanting to start pulling it apart, lol. i'm lucky that ashley and terri are both happy to help so i don't need to struggle with heavy/awkward stuff these days. the 2 post lift is a godsend too, should've got one years ago.
neil.
Good luck with the new acquisition, cool shape.Sounds like major back issues might be slowing progress a tad, hope all goes well, was it time to buy something more close to done?
it was yes, it'd take too long with my back now to do a 'full' build so even with the now required engine swap it should be out unpainted this summer. dawn's also not worried about bench seats so i'll just get some modern leather seats like i did for the valiant, much easier/quicker with only carpet, door cards and headliner to do (the headliner's not a panic item for now though).
then stage 2 will be get any teething stuff and paint done next winter.
neil.
have you sen the price of cortina suspension parts, particularly hubs and uprights lately? it's mad! so i tried 'kit car project' on ebay instead and i've bought an eagle rv (jeepy thing) rolling chassis with all the cortina front and rear suspension/axles that's cheap and fairly local and i'll pirate those bits and sell on the chassis if i can. i picked up a lhd cortina rack at the swapmeet so it should be pretty straightforward. now you may think cortina stuff's too small/lightweight for a yank but bear in mind this is a cortina wheelbase, unibody car of cortina dimensions and i'll be fitting a 2.0 pinto from a cortina so i've no reservations about it at all. later on i'll probably make tubular 'a' arms etc but for now new bushes and ball joints will tighten it up a treat. it'll definately drive better than a 50's nash for sure.
neil.
Sounds like a good plan Neil.
Cheers Tim W

the inspection for dvla registration went well as expected. i've got to help ashley get body brackets made up for his recovery truck project he's bought so i'll be putting the nash 'over the road' in the new garage for a while. even thought the inspection's done i don't think i'll touch it 'til i have the v5c in hand.
neil.
Wise move Neil.
Cheers Tim W
Sent from my G3121 using NSRA mobile app
i picked up the eagle rolling chassis to day and to save time just lifted the nash up and rolled it underneath. i love having that 2 post lift :thumbs_up_smiley:
i'll pull the front clip, rear axle and fuel tank out the cut the chassis into useable lumps so it'll go over the road without taking up too much room. i may reuse parts of it along with some now steel and put chassis rails under the nash. i'm not keen on the rear leaf spring hangers and shackle mounts bolting through the floorpan...... yes really!
Steady on wait for that V5C [emoji23][emoji23]
Cheers Tim W

ashley popped in after work and we towed the nash over the road into the new garage. it was fun on a strap as the nash currently has no foot brake or handbrake at all!! luckily the clutch wasn't stuck so i put it in 1st gear and used the clutch engagement to slow it down. my drive is downhill then it's uphill to the other garage and finally down into that garage. it all went ok though. he's dropping his truck off monday and now guess who gets to do the mot failure jobs???
neil.
still collecting parts, i just got a type 9 5 speed box to go behind the 2.0 pinto in the nash. i'm not worried about the cortina rear axle having 4.11 gears now, with the 18" wheels and o/d 5th gear it'll still have a decent cruise rpm on a run.
neil.
Looking forward to the build up Neil, hope they hurry up with the V5C.
Cheers Tim W

since stripping the cortina 'axles' off of the kit car chassis underneath the nash (nash was in the air on my lift) i've been fretting about the bullitt wheels maybe sticking out of the bodywork. so much so i've been looking at other 18" wheels and took pics of the bullitt ones ready to advertise them but common sense hit me and i got out the tape measure and some straight edges to measure the wheels and the nash. the front's (9x18 with 275/35's) will be 3" inside the arches each side and the rear's 10x18 with 295/35's) are only 1/8" inside the arches. so considering the rear 1/4's don't have inner arches as such (like a tri chevy/pa cresta' etc) i can use my arch roller tool to 'flare' the whole 1/4's out for a bit more clearance. there's 3/16" i can get milled from the wheels mounting faces too giving me an extra 3/8" extra width and i can also fit narrower tyres on them if need be.
all in all i'm happy i can keep them as i think they'll suit the car and as a bonus dawn likes them too.
neil.
i got a message from ian who i bought the nash from today saying the v5c arrived and he's changed ownership to me online. i should have a shiny new v5c in my name some time next week all being well.
and in other news i've got to drive into london (groan!) early next month to collect a mopar 273 engine and radiator (for free). why wouldn't i? :thumbs_up_smiley:http://www.nsra.org.uk/newforum/imag...ABAAEAAAIBRAA7
neil.
Nice one Neil. Why wouldn't you indeed. [emoji106]

the logbook arrived this morning, woohoo!
also i picked up a set of black leather front and back seats from an xf jag. you can't moan at £80 that's for sure and he's only 4 miles from home so no distance to travel either. he has another set, if anyone wants them i can put you in touch. he breaks them for the diesel engines as they're the same as landrover discovery ones but cheaper.
neil.
i had a thought about about getting more rear tyre to arch clearance. most halfshafts don't fully engage their splined portion into the diff side gears leaving a bit that could go in more if the casing were shortened and the excess cut from their ends. i checked with pics on ebay and it appears i can gain about 1/2" each side, there's at least that much in the pics that's not shiny from engaging into the gears. doesn't sound much for all that work but if it means i'll get the clearance i need it's worth it.
neil.
Brilliant news on the logbook Neil, all systems go now. Nice result on the seats as well.
Cheers Tim W
Sent from my G3121 using NSRA mobile app
cheers tim, yes mate. just got ashley's recovery truck 'project' here to mount the body. spent all day cutting off the old brackets from under the body and shortening it 6" at the front so the overhang's legal. then cut the rotten rear light brackets off and made new ones. the simple 'can you just' snowballed as they always do, lol.
i should get a few days on the nash before we go on holiday and then a week before the job arrives next month so hopefully i can get the engine and box out and swap the rear axle. fingers crossed and back permitting of course. i had to have all of my daily allowance of pain killers today that's for sure so i'll be stiff tomorrow. getting old sucks!

i can't do photoshop so...... what i do is print pics of the (usually) cars i want to visualise, cut them up and tape them back together in the desired way. today i copied a side on pic of a 58 rambler and set to blue peter style, lol. here's 3 pics, stock, then slammed with the rear wheel centralised in the arch and then all that with a roof chop too.
what do you think?
i'm liking no.2 myself :thumbs_up_smiley:

i know, but at £450 it's like new condition and with the motorcycle tyre fitting attachment too it was very cheap. cheap enough to still be a bargain after fuel costs. i looked on the website where it came from (same place as my 2 post lift) and it'd be about £1000 now. my car does about 55mpg on a run so about £85 round trip. not so bad.
neil.
Sounds too good to miss mate. [emoji106]

i thought so tim. :thumbs_up_smiley:
today in unrelated 'stuff' i've added a pop up side shalf to my home made computer desk for the mouse and mat. this is because when we were on holiday there was a garage sale up the road for a local animal charity. i had a quick look and bought a 32" blaupunkt flat screen telly to replace the 24" i had for my computer. the only drawback was i'm now too close to the big screen so the mouse needed to be further from it. a simple shelf on pop up brackets and it's now much better, the big 32" screen is cushty! [:D]
neil.
soooo..... due to fitment issues of both width and pcd i've bought another set of 18" wheels for the nash. and although modern in style they are somewhat traditional being wolfrace, lol. the tyres are cracked so only good for mockup but i'm hoping to be able to reuse the tyres from the mustang wheels if possible, fingers crossed. they are ford 4 stud so will bolt onto the cortina hubs and being modern have a fair bit of back spacing so should be ok. at £39.95 for the 4 i can always sell them on for a profit if they won't work, lol.
i'll put pics on once i collect them next weekend.
oh, the tyre changer works as good as it looks. i got some new short valves and a fitting tool along with tyre paste/lube and some stick on balance weights too. i also got a new manual 'bubble' wheel balancer that's old school but won't take up any room as it fits on the shelf when not in use.
neil.
so today i was bored, sat waiting for the batteries to charge on my van as it has mot tomorrow. i tidies the garage a bit, then sat down deleting old numbers from my phone. i came to american glass, i had their number as i'd made enquiries about a new screen for the valiant. but i digress..... i gave them a call and after giving them the car details i received a call back saying their supplier had top tint screens in stock for the rambler :thumbsup2::thumbsup2:
delivered to my door for what i think is a very reasonable £475 plus vat. it should be here in 2-3 weeks which is just fine. i was all set to remake the whole surround to use 2 pieces of flat lam' making it a spilt screen car but this is one of those times where my time can be spent better elsewhere and just buy the part.
as i'd previously mentioned i'd had no luck finding one but i'd completely forgotten about these guys. here's a link to their website if anyone needs an odd bit of glass, and they don't come much more odd than a 58 rambler that's for sure. https://www.americanglass.co.uk/
neil.
here's the 18" wolfrace wheels i bought for £39.95 off of ebay. not sure what to do finish wise yet, they either need just a repaint or strip them, polish the rims and paint the centres. i've not decided yet but they're fine as is for mockup. i can also then decide how much bigger i can go tyre wise, but again for mockup they're just fine. also this anglia came back again, this time for final assembly. he's sat his new 146hp crossflow in place and mocked up the new milton and gaz gold suspension, so there's only everything else to fit lol.
This may be too little, too late, not having visited the forum for some months. A British built Nash Bathtub used two classic mini screens cut and butted up to create a new replacement for the unobtanium screen, At least that was the info in Custom Car, the Nash was a Cadbury blueish colour, I'
ve no idea who owned or built the car, but someone here may be able to assist.
Yep, too late. That car was the bigger Nash anyway so.......
i ordered the front and rear screen rubbers yesterday while they were on offer. still not cheap but they're correct so.... these guys only do nash/rambler rubber parts https://www.nashramblerrubber.com/home
i spoke to the windscreen supplier who has a second screen on it's way and due some time this month. the first one arrived from the states cracked, doh!
neil.
So it's going back in the workshop then, or will a new Pop be on the cards...
