Beginners Guide to Selecting, Copying and Pasting
Selecting, Copying and Pasting
If you're not familiar with the concept of Selecting, Copying and Pasting text, here's a brief explanation.
Often we need to copy a piece of information from one place to another - for example if we want to:
- copy part of one document into another document
- send somebody an email message that includes a link to a web site
- post a thread on a forum that includes a link to a YouTube video
- create a forum post that includes an image from the Image Gallery
Copying and pasting simply allows us to make a temporary 'copy' of something, then use that copied information somewhere else by 'pasting' it into place.
Notes: In the following examples,
- Right-click means click your right-hand mouse button
- Ctrl & C means 'while holding down the Ctrl key, press the C key'
To 'Copy' the address of a web site so that you can 'Paste' it into a forum post or an email.
At the top of your browser window you should always see the address of the web page you're viewing. It'll start with 'www' or 'http://www.'
- The easiest way:
To Select and Copy the web address:
- Right-click on the web address, and choose 'Copy' from the drop-down menu.
Now 'Paste' the copied web address where you need it:
- Go to your email or forum post, right-click where you want to insert the web address, and choose 'Paste'.
- Or if you can't get the right-click method to work, try this:
'Select' all of the web address before you copy it:
- click once in the web address, then press Ctrl & A on your keyboard (this is a short-cut to 'select All')
- or use your mouse to 'drag' over the full address - making sure you select all the characters
Now 'Copy' the selected web address:
- press Ctrl & C on your keyboard (this is a short-cut for 'Copy')
Now 'Paste' the copied web address where you need it:
- Go to your email or forum post, click where you want to insert the web address, then press Ctrl & V on your keyboard (this is a short-cut for 'Paste')
To include a Thumbnail link to a Gallery image in a regular Forum post.
First you need to locate the image in the Gallery, and view it at full size.
Below the image you'll see a block of information, including these complicated-looking codes:
Select and copy all of the required BB Image Code:
- Click once in the BB Image Code box
- Press Ctrl & A on your keyboard to 'select All' of the text
- Press Ctrl & C on your keyboard to 'Copy' the selected text
Now 'Paste' the copied code into your post:
- Create, or return to your forum post
- Click once in your post to place your cursor where you want to Paste the code
- Press Ctrl & V on your keyboard to 'Paste' the selected text
To include a full-size Gallery image in a regular Forum post.
Select and copy all of the required Direct Link Code:
- Click once in the Direct Link Code box
- Press Ctrl & A on your keyboard to 'select All' of the text
- Press Ctrl & C on your keyboard to 'Copy' the selected text
Now 'Paste' the copied code into your post:
- Create, or return to editing your forum post
- click the 'Insert Image' button on the tool bar (arrowed below)
- click in the box that says: 'Please enter the URL of your image'
- Press Ctrl & V on your keyboard to 'Paste' the selected text into the box
Notes:
- Right-click means click your right-hand mouse button
- Ctrl & C means 'while holding down the Ctrl key, press the C key'
- Results may vary depending on the web browser you're using
- Instructions are for Windows users .. sorry Apple users
- If you can't figure out why Ctrl & V should be a short-cut to Paste, just remember it's the next key on the keyboard to Ctrl & C to copy - so you only need to move your fingers a little to do a 'copy and paste'.
You'll pretty soon get used to selecting something with your mouse, then using Ctrl & C to copy, and Ctrl & V to Paste, with the other hand.
